Make a Fast Charge USB cable

  • In this video I show how to modify an existing USB cable to turn it into a fast charge cable, this is especially useful for Android devices using AC or Car charge adapters that are charging in USB mode instead of AC mode.
    If the data pins (two middle pins) are shorted together, the Android device will assume it's connected to an AC adapter and try to pull more power than the usual 450-500ma it pulls when it thinks it's connected to a regular usb port.
    Some people choose to cut their cable in half and then solder the wires, but this is a fiddly process and damages the cable shielding and general strength.

      Gadget Addict Hi.. I short out the middle two pins by soldering it... after plugging in, the amps got reduced from 460A to 100A. Can you tell me why that happened? I used app called ampere to measure the amps

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  7 лет назад +1

      +Stanley Victor the app isn't accurate and 460A or 100A are insanely high. Most USB is below 3A

    Very useful video - however, it is important to ensure the lead you are modifying can handle the higher current. Some cheap USB leads contain very thin strands of copper that are not intended to handle the higher current and may present a fire risk.

    Um, why stuff up the USB cable with the strip? It would make more sense to put the aluminium strip on female USB on the power supply so that the cable can still be used as a data cable.

    I discovered that the mobile does not charge quickly
    Now, after watching the video and after connect, both ends of the data

    Awesome! My Oneplus One charger is 2.3amps and it charges from Zero to Full in about 45 minutes... Looking at my battery status it states its charging at AC current so full power is being utilized for that quick charging.... Awesome! Now if I can find small Supercapacitors and mod them to fit inside my phone replacing my phone's battery then my phone will be able to charge fully in about 30 seconds or so!

    Thank you. This was easy and it really works. I just recently switched from an iPhone to a Samsung S5. It's been 3 weeks and I hate it, but I'm pretty sure that's because I don't know how to really use this phone. Do you have any website suggestions that would help me understand everything this phone is capable of?

    • @GadgetAddict

      Mmm sorry I wouldn't really know what to suggest. There are some things I love about iOS and some things I love about Android. Both have their pros and cons. To some degree it will just take some time to feel comfortable and enjoy when swapping between them. I recently moved back from android to iOS and I hated it at first.

      +Lana Etherton If you want to fast charge iPhone from PC, install
      "Ai charger" and you need no HW modification.
      I think apple uses the same mechanism for detecting wall chargers, so it should work.

      Hello See Videos on RUclips Samsung Galaxy S5 review or so but I recommend everyone if you used iPhone and you switch or go to Android don't buy Samsung ! Samsung with his TouchWiz and Knox is not good for the one's from coming from iPhone ! Everyone that used Samsung phone will confirm you that the phone will slow down in 4 to 5 months use or earlier that's Samsung ! And you buyed s5 that is a problem phone I had a Samsung S5 plus the voice quality was shit and micro USB port went broke every 3-4 weeks and the battery lost his Battery was discharged very quickly although the phone was new it was swapped but the other new one was like that and I gave it back and buyed oneplus 5 with oxygen os Android system ,double Sim 8gb ram 128 Gb internal memory is the best phone ! Is very fast and I had never the problems that I had with Samsung ! At the moment they released OnePlus 6 see technical documents!

    You should do that on the USB plug end because you are using spliced usb cable to power cable, that way you do not mess up with the OTG cable, plus the aluminum might move around and shorted other pins when you push the plug.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад

      Mozz Tzar Yep, I could do that. But I wanted to show people how to do it on a cable that they can move between many different chargers. I'm using aluminium tape which doesn't move once stuck in place and moulds to the shape once you use it once or twice :)

    Unless you know the wire can take the current.
    Most usb cables are only rated for 500ma, trying to pull more can in the best case melt your usb cable and in the worst case, burn down your house from an overheated cable that shorted out and caused a fire.

    Power exchange works over data pins, which is how the phone tels the charger to change modes, and send more than 5v 1..5a. The only thing this accomplishes is removing the phone from thinking it's plugged into a laptop. Of its not a quality cord it will accumulate heat and possibly damage the phone, unsoldering the video card and or frying the circuit board the charging port. Do not attempt this

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  10 лет назад

      The two middle pins are data lines, they don't carry any power. Aside from that, USB power is only 5v DC which will not shock you. As for a fire risk, there should be none if you follow the directions exactly. If you're not confident, buy a special 'charge cable' instead of modifying your charger :)

    • @GadgetAddict

      +JinRei Nope. It's a feature supported by the manufacturers of the phone, it's not a hack :) You can buy an official cable to do it, but they're more expensive. Charging the battery faster will decrease the overall life of the battery but it's not hugely noticeable. We're talking about after years.

    • @GadgetAddict

      If your fingers are nimble enough, a soldering iron and a bit of solder. If you don't plan to regularly unplug the cable from the charger then a carefully place piece of aluminium foil with some glue. Or cut the wire and rejoin with the data lines shorted. Failing all of that, just go buy a fast charge cable :)

      wewang negapatan Unusual question :P I don't think it would be possible using just a cable but you could design a circuit that would allow you to remove the battery from one phone, boost the voltage and use it to charge a second phone. It wouldn't be very convenient but it could work. It would probably be better to just carry a portable power bank :)

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад

      The quality of the cable can make a difference, if the cable is very long or the wires inside are very thin then it can limit the amount of power the cable can supply to your phone. Also if your phone is very old then it may really not be capable of charging at a higher rate. Although I've not heard of any phones charging as low as that.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад

      Shorting the middle pins together means the two pins in the middle are making electrical contact. In my case the aluminium foil is put over the two middle pins meaning they are effectively joined together, They're only data pins and don't carry power.

      In comparison to the stock cable from samsung, ref:1698; max 1000; ave: 1000. Maybe the cables I used are really poor quality.

      Mark Lemuel Yanuaria That is a possibility, some cheap cables are made with the lowest quality and least amount of actual wire.

    Wat app do you use for showing the amps

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  10 лет назад

      The only app I've found that works is 'CurrentWidget' which you can download from the Play Store - play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manor.currentwidget
      I customized the settings to make the text much bigger than the defaults :)

    what application you are using to show the Ampere value while charging?

    It works with regular tape or electric tape? Because I can't find the aluminum tape. Thanks.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 лет назад

      +LOLLIPOP - Agar.io It needs to be a conductive tape. Regular sticky tape or electrical tape wouldn't work since they work as insulators instead of conductors. The idea is to short the two middle pins together so they make electrical contact with each other.

      +Gadget Addict ok so much thank you and i have a last question. This tactic is can be start a fire?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  8 лет назад +1

      +LOLLIPOP - Agar.io Nope because the data pins don't carry power. It's the two outside pins that carry the power. If you have any doubts, I'd recommend just buying a quick charge cable from amazon :)

    Your idea of shortening it with Aluminium Foil Tape strip is not at all good and more over not safe at all. The Foil Tape may slip from its position any moment once the adhesive loosens up so do not show something which is unsafe.

    What happens if the stuff you shove into the socket moves after some time, and you're shorting VCC to D-

      then your phone will be toast. i intend to do this but I'll be cutting a tiny strip of foil then stick that on a transparent celotap cut to the size of the two pins, then i'll extend the tape and wrap it to the outside. tjis tape will effectively hold the foil over the two pins without ait accidentally moving around

    What kind of AC adapters charged in USB mode instead of AC mode ?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад +1

      V. Kansil It's just a regular AC to DC wall wart. 110/220V AC input and 5v DC output. It's pretty common for various devices.

      Gadget Addict How about if we use non-factory charger with original cable ? For example : Motorola charger + Samsung original cable (4 wires, non-shorted) + Samsung phone. Should we shorted it as well to get faster charging ?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад +1

      V. Kansil It shouldn't make a difference what charger or cable you use. The same principle still applies :) They're all pretty much universal, thats the idea behind USB :)

    Can i know., the charger input and output??..

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  10 лет назад

      The charger in the video is a regular AC power supply which can push out up to 4amp at 5v. But of course no phone will draw that much. Most phones/tablets wont draw more than 2amp.

    Hi gave you thumbs up as I am sure it works but I tried this on several Leeds and charging points but no improvement, I even went as far as to solder center pins together an still no joy I have two different generic USB chargers 2.1amps and 2.5 amps and an original Samsung with 950mA where am I going wrong tried with different cables same result, is there an amp measuring app you recommend?

    Great idea. So you have an AC adapter wired straight to female USB? I assume 5V DC output?

      Gadget Addict Did you just figure out pos/negative and wire it to the corresponding USB wires?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  9 лет назад

      Scott Krieger Yep. Best to use a voltmeter but you can optionally trust the wire markings (e.g. white line on one wire).
