About the artificial look of photos (or I guess videos) shot on iPhones, I assume they apply a lot of positive clarity to the picture after it's taken. After you take a picture there's a slight delay before the final image is eventually displayed, so you can often see the before/after. Plus if I apply some negative clarity in Lightroom, the iPhone pictures blend in much better with the rest of the pictures in my catalog.
I wish Apple had some sort of 'don't overcook the image' option. Sure, you can take 14 pictures secretly in the background and stitch together the sharpest takes with AI and blah blah blah. Hi All! I'm a long time fan Chris and Jordan (and a recent fan of Jaron since being introduced to him when you two moved to PetaPixel)! Tech question - I have a Sigma SD Quattro (and yes, I LOVE it despite its quirks) and I've found that the live preview stops working below -1 EV with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art in certain situations. The EV will continue to decrease on the display but the preview image on the monitor stops darkening like it should if I continue to increase shutter speed or close down the aperture. The only place I found any info about this was on an old DP Review forum thread from 2017 that I resurrected (but which quickly devolved into an argument between me and the one or two other people experiencing the issue versus everyone else telling us we must be doing something wrong). At this point the camera is discontinued and I doubt Sigma will fix the issue, but I was wondering if there is any hope... and if there are any other older cameras or camera/lens combos out there with similar technical issues that remain to this day. hello hello, a smol request from a fellow calgarian, can you guys discuss a recommendation for a rookie who fancies himself as a prosumer someday 😎. i’ve never owned a dedicated camera before, i am going on my biannual pilgrimage to “back home” in jan 2024. i want to get the cheapest thing i can get with an optical viewfinder, reasonably compact and something with excellent knob feel and satisfying shutter click, that’s all 🤓. i don’t mind going used but i don’t wanna spend more than 300 on something that i might not use regularly… ps: thank you and i know 300 these days is chump change so i’ll spend a bit more if i have to😊
Q: There already been camera and mobile phone integrations, IRRC, which did not work out. Yet the current generation of on-device post-capture computing seem to be much better positioned in terms of value. Mobile applications developers have also gained better experience creating somewhat more usable interfaces. Mobile (and some stationary) players are build around Android for some time now in the audio world. Do you foresee a camera vendor incorporating a mobile OS for integrating processing Pixel-style in a mirrorless camera in a near future?
I have a video question! My Canon EOS R6 has a slow sensor readout in 4k 24p, but a fast readout in 4k 60p. Dpreview hypothesized that the R6 is reading out its sensor in 12-bit in its 60p mode to achieve a fast readout. Is there a dynamic range penalty with 12-bit readout for my R6? All of the log footage I shoot on it is being encoded at 10-bit, so it shouldn’t matter whether the sensor is read at 12 or 14-bit right? But the X-H2S achieves its high dynamic range at 14-bit readout so I guess the sensor bit depth during video capture does matter even if the file is saved as a 10-bit video file. Also, on a related note, I want to use my R6’s fast sensor readout for 4k 24p. Is it valid to shoot the camera is 60p at 1/50th second and drop it into a 23.98p timeline on Final Cut? Will there be any other issues besides a possible dynamic range hit?
Would you guys recomend a new Fuji x-s20 or a used x-t4? The slightly larger EVF in the xt-4 is appealing, but I also dont really know how big a difference it is as I've been an SLR user my whole life. Weather sealing is also probably a plus for me in the Pacific Northwest but would love to hear your take on this. Ps: Mainly a photographer with minimal video from time to time if that makes a difference.
As far as I know, Fuji x-s20 has better autofocus and IBIS, so it would be a better choice. However, in my experience Fuji's autofocus still lags behind the rest, so if that's important to you, you might want to consider Sony or Canon.
@@Arcboard I’ve a full frame system and also have a used XT4. I was just checking you weren’t moving down from full frame as you would notice a difference in image quality. Re the XT4 - I bought it for travel / backpacking where WR grade lenses and the bodies weather sealing are a major factor. The EVF is good - they get better all the time, although I’m left eyed (!) and presume the control layout is better suited to righters - I find back button focusing a challenge , and the eye cup aperture is circular rather than square further impinging on view. The xt4 is a solid piece of kit physically (weight and materials) and I suspect you’ll notice that as being a deciding factor v the x-s20.

A bit weird how adamant and bored you guys sounded about this.
If the denoising filter in photoshop is "AI", then "AI" is an absolutely meaningless and nebulous term. It may as well mean software at that point. Sure neural networks are part of AI courses, but that's because they may form a part of an AI, or an AI may utilise multiple, but it's like calling a wheel a car. It's an important part, but still distinct. AI is just a buzzword now, it sells, and that's why neural networks are frequently mislabelled, and why the hosts, and many other people percieve it as tiresome and disingenuous.
@@kuyans3889 yes it is a buzzword, and it is used for that effect. The fact that AI algorithms are ubiquitous in our days may turn the use of the buzzword as pointless I agree, but it does not change the fact that machine learning is an important area of AI. I may understand what they mean, it is still a wrong statement. Suddenly AI is only perceived as a chat gpt sort of thing but guess on what kind of stuff that is built on?

I’m just here to point out that Deep Learning *is* a kind of AI, so calling out companies for marketing something as AI while ”it’s only deep learning” is kinda strange…
I love the podcast and have followed you guys for years, but I gotta tell you that you need to learn more about the forms of artificial intelligence before you dismiss something as "it's just machine learning." Machine learning definitely is a form of AI. I'm guessing you now see generative AI as the only form worthy of the name, but it's the same idea as machine learning, only using a large language model as the data.
I'm always a bit confused when you guys talk about "wrong AI marketing" when its "just machine learning". Either I'm misunderstanding your argument or its just a wrong assumption of what AI is. Machine Learning is a fundamental building block of AI. So if a company uses machine learning for focusing they are indeed using AI technology. Natural Language Understanding is "AI" too. I can just leave two definitions (both campbell 2019) here, and if I'm misunderstanding the issue please clarify it in the future. AI: The broad class of technology developed with the objective of collecting data in order to solve problems or make decisions. Machine Learning: An application of AI that provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed.
"Akshually" Also, none of that automatic learning and experiential improvement is happening in-body. Like it just isn't there. Your 7R5 is absolutely not getting smarter every day. It is not learning. It's falling back on a static dataset that will not change or grow. So it's fair to take a jab at marketers who imply that it is somehow actively AI. Now, is the model it is using a product of a lot of off-body machine learning done prior to release and distilled into a rigid unchanging dataset? Sure. But again, no AI on body. None. Not in the three watt lean processing envelope the camera lives in. Its reading a static thing that was written in stone a year before the reviewers even knew the camera was coming. Whoopty doo. If that's the bar for calling something AI, then literally everything is somehow AI.
@@POVwithRC see, thats a good point. If it just uses a AI generated/supported/whatever dataset and not actively the technology then yes its marketing bs. Then the jab at the marketers should be that it doesnt actually use machine learning, and not that machine learning isnt AI.
@@TheChosenOne_Mm, not really seeing the framework. I'm just calling you a major sperg for ackshuallying so hard. Like I said, Hope AI sees this bro. Just claim to be confused again or something.

@@filipeferreira180 I sometimes get the impression that people think AI is only when it’s general AI. As long as AI is treated as „magic“ it will work as a buzzword.
Ted should have used a better MIC. (My ears hurt from modulation and weird wobbling(AI NOISE CANCELLING LOL :D). I am not sure you should touch Apple news here. M3 seems to look like downgrade, cost reducing product... with starting SKU with 8GB of RAM in 2023. Great.
This is actually my fault. Ted's camera feed was separate from the feed used in Riverside, and I didn't realize there was a better mic attached to that camera when I edited this. Sorry! -Jaron
"Akshually"
Also, none of that automatic learning and experiential improvement is happening in-body.
@@TheChosenOne_I do not see the point of having too much autism about it. Defending AI will not make it sleep with you.
@@POVwithRC what kind of schizo answer is that supposed to be 😂
@@TheChosenOne_Mm, not really seeing the framework. I'm just calling you a major sperg for ackshuallying so hard. Like I said, Hope AI sees this bro.
Just claim to be confused again or something.
I vote for Ted to permanently replace that other guy on the podcast.
I disagree, Jaron's great! Why would someone from a completely different publication be justified as a host? Jaron is the chief editor, he's got great insights into petapixel's coverage.
Disagree, but I think having Ted as an irregular guest would work nice.
If it was Ted every week, I think it would get stale. But, the odd one like this, it has that silly last day of school feel.
No one likes jern
i don't understand the intent of this podcast...random talks?
Woooooow!!! Ted! Amazing!!!😮😊🎉
