This is absolutely the correct way to install Tape. A video this consice and accurate has no business on the internet.
😄🤜🤛
it is like a first grader video,
@@gregoriomandigma3817 thats because plumbing is a first-grader trade, -unlike electricians, who are highly skilled, intelligent and magical
@@Got2Learn agreed. Thank you
😅 Brilliant!
Wrong. You apply it like this and then it leaks. Then you do it exactly the same way again and it work
I had an idea because it's ALMOST common sense, but also, I've never done it before. I wanted to double-check.
Should've paid more attention to how my dad did things when he was here.
Thanks, man!
Here’s my tip, if the thread is facing your right side, then roll away from you, if the thread is facing your left side, roll towards your body. This is what helped me never go the wrong direction with tape
Thank you! I needed this for a leaky shower head!
Glad I could help!!!
tapelon is not magic, you need to know the real problem, tapelon tape is not a magic that can easily stop's leak, wake up like you are not born yesterday
Thank you for this. Your videos help me explain stuff with a visual aid and different way of explaining to my apprentices :)
Not only that when you go to tighten anything on it, it’s gonna spin the same way so it will pull some of it off making it ineffective
as long as you apply clockwise by your right hand it will be effective, with out pull some and much easily turn tighten.
I do that with brass fitting to sch80 pipe threads
Helps prevent cross treading
You should have specified you were taping a pipe for gas. You don't want to use tape specifically made for gas on a pipe carrying water, or vice-versa.
Blue for water, yellow for gas, and white for air. Different attributes that allow the first two to seal when they come into contact with water or petroleum gasses, but air doesn't need to be able to seal because you want to do a couple extra wraps. I think that's the reason, but might be wrong. If so let me know why?
There's absolutely no difference between white and yellow tape besides thickness. They can definitely be interchanged by just adjusting how much you use.
why ?
WOW it came out pretty clean
Your short vids have improved! You are giving more details than you used to and you are explaining that all important question of WHY you are doing something. Awesome to see you grow in your presentation style. 👍😄
😇😇😇
it is actually basic in plumbers industry, many of our clients knows this
Shot out to my Boy JASON at Power Plumbing for teaching me this. Over in North Hollywood,CA.
Thank you very much and thank you very much for your Ministry!
I do all my own work and do it exactly like this except leaving the first couple of threads bare. I am gonna start doing it like this. Thank you for teaching me something new.
😇
overlapping is not an issue. as long as it is a couple layers only, remember tapelon tape is soft material and can break into pieces. when you apply it into a thread it acks like a rubber and seal a un even space in a thread
💡Thumbs'idea👍🏾
I go one thread back, and one single wrap only, otherwise it will just roll off when you tighten into the fitting. I use more wraps in a pinch when there is loose or damaged threads
If it is fine threads and or plastic fittings(shower heads) then I'll wrap it once. If it is NPT fittings like the video shows. The general recommendation is 3 times around. This can vary though if you are using regular tape vs thicker extra heavy tape.
You don't want to put so much tape that together the fitting just scraps the whole wrap up the pipe without actually getting between the two surfaces.
Also it can only be applied clockwise on the threads or it will unravel itself whilst your tightening it into the fitting
Unless you are doing it too reverse threads, but that isn't in need of Teflon usually
yess unfortunately however you apply it aslong it is clockwise and tight you are expert
Great 👍🏻 keep on mind, that you need to wind it in the same direction as you screw the other part on. Otherwise it will gunk up eventually
Correct!
Thank you, don't forget to share, it really helps the channel!
I’d use 5 turns to be on the safe side, and liquid sealant to prevent corrosion
Thanks so much bro
thank you!
Thank s it was usefull you r help.
Thank you bro
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Glad it was helpful!
correct! I ALWAYS clean my threads with a double tap of my finger😅
These simple videos on simple things like this help more people than you know
That's so nice of you, thanks Stephen 😊
Never use tape on gas piping, dope only. Whisps of tape can be blown through the pipe and past sediment traps. This can clog orifices and hold open pressure regulators.
I use tape and dope. Hold it back a thread. Won't hurt a thing
Just twist the tape and apply the same depth as the fitting. Then apply pipe dope. This will keep the tape from shredding towards the pipe. Use monster brand. It's for water or gas
Last point mentioned in passing is the most crucial :P
almost, not quite.
I think you also need to be clear, both visually and verbally,
that its important the direction of rotation must follow the direction the pipe will be screwed.
You dont want to have the tape tail being pulled back by the clockwise direction of screwing the pipe on.
So, perhaps for clarity, show AND tell people to wrap tape in the same direction as you will screw on the pipe.
Thank you!
Perfect 👍
Yes!!!
I'm showing this ty o the rest of my department!!!!
It really isn't hard
If you're using thread tape to seal a jar that the original seal has went bad or just a container of some kind with a lid that needs a seal, you can add the tape to the top threads and let it hang ever so slightly over the edge to form a seal for the lid as you tighten it down. But yeah, don't do this with pipes, like he says. Lol
OMG I need to redo all my pipes
😅😆
Use a metal saw blade to score the thread to avoid the tape to spin around when putting the coupling on.
Usually you need more than three turns of teflon
Thank you
You're welcome
ALWAYS apply it in a clockwise direction.
Why are there 4 colours of Teflon tape? (Pink, yellow, orange and white). Do they each have their own specific application? I know orange tape is the most expensive, while white tape is ubiquitous, and the least costly.
that tip about the placement so it doesn't unravel too quickly 😭😭 why was my body automatically doing it on the top every...single...time... 😂😂😂
3 weeks, a hundred pipes, not once did my mind make my body start it from the bottom 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
Fragments of Teflon that are over the end of the pipe can get cut off and end up in the gas valve, which can result in a big problem.
Gas valves have screens
Wrinkles in the tape can cause leaks on high psi applications
very good
HERO WORKS
It was always three threads back when doing hydraulics or anything of the sort to prevent contamination
2-1/2 - 3 turns of tape is all you need. Any more than that and it will push off in front of the fitting.
Though congrats on explaining to start after the first thread.
🤘🤘🤘
As someone who has never done this but watched 17 similar videos, I would have to say you are incorrect. No less than 9 wraps should be used and it doesn't matter if it's wrapped tightly. 💯
No way!!!
@@eljefe1439 you are correct!
When putting in radiator tails we use 16-20 wraps
But we use the white ptfe that’s thinner.
Clockwise is good if you're installing a fitting to the pipe. But wouldn't counter clockwise work if the fitting is in place and you need to install the pipe to the fitting?
In other words. Apply the tape in the same direction you're twisting?
Well explained
Yes
Thanks for the video. Question - how often do you wrap the pipe clockwise? 99%? In contrast to going counterclockwise. I'm assuming counterclockwise is for left-handed threads which is a rarity. This part trips me up the most
Yeah, i'd say about that, 99% 🙂

Now we know how to apply, tell us how to make it stop leaking.
Bien fait mon ami 👍
Good video
Thank you Susan.
Thank you- I actually have been doing it correctly but - since I am a self-taught die guy it's good to get reassured by a pro
I appreciate the simple things to double check myself.
For natural gas we cannot use Teflon nor should we rector seal number five is the way to go
#5 is the way to go!
There is an approved tape we use in the U.K. also we call it P.T.F.E not teflon tape just different terminology
@@alemgas UGH, the Tape in the Video is YELLOW TEFLON which is approved for Gas Lines
@@LyonhartZ2 someone said you cant use teflon tape on this post, i pointed out there is a tape you can use on gas, as in the U.K. it's the yellow spool one. Cheers
A good tip my stepdad gave me many years ago was to always hold what you're wrapping in your left hand and wrap away from yourself. Good tips though.
Always start at the other end first though.
I cant believe i thought the threads were just wearing the tape away
Would this work for pickles as well 🤔
We need to apply around 30 round for high pressure line
Not sure if this is just a me problem, but I for the longest time always went around 3 times and never had any problems. Recently I've noticed this has not been sufficient. Every connection I've made recently has taken right about 8 rotation before it stopped leaking. I know, that seems like a lot, but it's not leaking. Just seems odd every fitting lately has done the same thing...
I'm self-taught and been doing this way for the whole time.
I love how people exaggerate problems in their videos.. like how to hold a roll of teflon tape ..
2 rotations is more than enough. I plumb in chemicals for water treatment on frac pads (hydrochloric acid, chlorite, and napco bleach) using either schedule 80 pvc kr kynar. Anymore than two rotations you are putting strain on the female pipe/whatever female threaded product you are using. 2 rotations and a line of true blue or other thread glue will do you with any liquid you are plumbing
How many times do you wrap?
Somewhat related question: Is there a proper order when using pipe dope and tape? I was taught to dope then tape… but I know some people were taught to tape then dope. Merci!
Its actually one or the other, but if I was to choose one, it would be tape, then dope.
@@Got2Learn Nice thanks for the info. I think the company I worked for did dope first so it'd be less messy lol. Water sprinkler pipe/fire suppression systems.
I do a thin coat of dope, one wrap of tape, then more dope. Manufacturers tell you not to use both, but everybody does it, everybody is different, some keep them Dope, it is probably a waste of time to use tape until you get to larger fittings like 2 in and larger. Don't use it on gas, however they do make special tape for gas piping, it is yellow in color.
You want to follow the direction of the threatened great information for people that don't know how to use
how you get no leak? what is the thickness of the tape? with 0.1mm i have to do like 15 turn to get propper seal.
Gonna recommend your channel to our trade school for apprentices to learn faster!
Woooohoooooo 🤩🤩🤩
This is 90% correct... He forgot to mention that you put the tape on in the same direction like you are tightening a fitting on the pipe.. Righty tighty... If you put it on the other way...the direction as if you were taking off a fitting it will rip the tape off the threads as you tighten the fitting and not work properly... So if you are putting the tape on and it starts coming off and loosening as you tighten the fitting then you put the tape on backwards
two wraps is the max
always tape the first thread
For metal pipe liquid teflon is much better and easier.
Why do i remember reading somewhere that your only supposed to do 1 or 2 layers max???
I always stuck with 3-4 and it worked great for me, if 1 or 2 works for you, continue with that ;)
With gas pipe as shown do you recommend using pipe dope sealant as well?
One or the other.
@@Got2Learn
Okay thanks that’s what I thought, I’m not a ticketed tradesman like you are but I have seen some videos where they say to use both tape and dope… I would think that’s not necessarily. Thank you for your videos I really enjoyed them!!
@@JCsaves333 a lot of places ask for dope only for gas, some tape only but both is not necessary.
You are good
😇😇😇🤜🤛
after I finish install my faucet head they're upside down or not in normal position. Can someone tell me why😂
that’s down and precise! very unique voice/accent

Good boy.
meanwhile using a whole roll of Teflon per pipe
I've been called to so many jobs where a leak is something as simple as the previous person not installing Teflon correctly
Yup!!
Loctite 55
if u want a leak free connection..use a cotton string before applying teflon..even a 200 psi leaktest wont have a problem...
I stopped about 3 seconds in. Don't ever wipe threads with your bare hands or fingers. You risk getting cut open with a burr.
Can you do dating tips?*
*asking for a friend.
Apparently, this is just satire. Otherwise, you'd know you can use any hand to put tape on, and the only thing that kind of matters is which way the threads go so you don't run the chance of removing the tape.
Hand goes away from you. That’s how I remember it
if you wrap gas line threads where I live the inspector will tell you to take it all apart
You need to use more tape if its for water. This was gas tape
Only need 4 wraps for water
Clockwise when your looking at the pipe. Pipe is tapered but the fittings are not. That why you don't need it.
This only works when you have a vise holding the pipe. Try it without the vice see what happens.
you tricked me! I came here because the thumbnail is wrongwise.
What on earth did you think it was then?
Well I've been doing it wrong for years here I am using my non dominant hand
Never use teflon tape on a hydraulic fitting on injector pump fitting for diesel Teflon tape does not compress so if a piece of that gets in the system it will definitely walk up a gear or a pump you may call a vian pump
I cut my finger watching you rub those threads.
7 rotation is the standard
👍
I tell the kids I train, point the threads away from your body, apply counterclockwise minimum three turns
