Talk about hitting the nail on the head!!!! Nicely done, Dave. Sounds like he was just looking for an escape. He talked so slow and sad. Wish the best for the caller, and he will have many other ways to help others in life, by doing His will. That missions trip is Not the "Be All-End All" of ways to serve!
Dave was spot on. Don’t make the mission trip about escaping life because that’s not the reason you go. Also, you should be spiritually mature and ready to serve on a mission trip.
That pay sounds awesome for a part time “retail” gig. If you’re living in your parents house at 22 and they are having financial issues, it is your responsibility to help out. If you don’t want to help out, then move yourself out and take on 100% of your own expenses.
That was a fantastic response by Dave and a great teaching moment for the lad. I know a lot of people that do that. Go on mission trips to escape their circumstances, rather than serve the needs of others.
Living a purposeless life is not something anyone should endure however this negative mindset has to go. Sometimes the only way out is the way though. A question I answered that guides me through hard times was “what would I be doing with my life if money were no issue?” That’s your long range target.
Navy offers a wide range of training and opportunities... even in the air (if you want to fly). I served 26 years in Navy/Navy Reserve... and traveled widely (Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy) and served with the Seabees (repairing roads, building schoolhouses, installing electrical equipment, and so much more in Vietnam), a destroyer squadron (great 10-week summer WestPac cruise while I was on college summer break that took me all over the Pacific!), aviation command in Hawaii (transport aircraft), Pentagon duty, NATO assignment in Italy, and more. While on Reserve active duty, I made a contact that helped me land my first great civilian job, too (connections!). Now, retired, I have a tidy pension, in addition to Social Security, IRA and nice bank balances. I also have enough left over each month to do make regular charitable donations. Navy gave me my start, including G.I. Bill college benefits that helped me pay for my degree. Is military service dangerous? Can be, but not often. Is it hard? Sometimes, but you have support from everyone around you to pull and push you forward. Is it fulfilling? For me, it was (learning skills that helped me in college, surmounting challenges, working missions to completion as part of teams, and achieving success as part of a fine organization). Might not be your cup of tea, but it can become a great "mission" and worth checking out. Gave this guy in the mirror a direction when he completed high school and was absolutely clueless about what was next.
Most young kids joining the military today are not doing so out of enthusiasm for defending the country. They are more interested in a free ride to college and the guaranteed benefits of a stable job and retirement paid for by the tax payers. We should be encouraging young people to entrepreneurs and to build things people want.
I found I was happiest when I was doing missions work. Before that experience I would have totally agreed with Dave. But my personal experiences told me otherwise. It wasn’t an escape but a chunk of time when I felt like I was living my purpose. I just hope to get back there. Perhaps YWAM is this guy’s purpose and he needs to go all in.
I went on a missions trip, with I believe a heart to serve. However, a small part of me was hoping that the trip would refresh me in my draining minimum-wage job. Instead, I realized what work could really be and grew even more frustrated with my job.
I have seen too many people run to ministry because they failed at everything else. While some people can indeed find God in difficulty, the ministry is not an escape route. I find people who serve God despite having ample other opportunities much more credible than people who couldn't really pull off anything else. That being said, everyone's situation is different. Dave nailed this on the head.
At least this guy has the money. When I was with YWAM, most of the kids didn't have nearly enough money to complete the mission and there was enormous pressure on the rest of us to give them money. Then one of our leaders stole the money we had donated. Fun times and that was just during the training part. Once we got overseas, the real nuttiness began. I can't say I regret my year with them, because I did have some wild adventures, but I sure wouldn't do it again.
The part that saddened me was his parents situation and you can hear the burden on him. That's not fair for a young adult. Its the same reason I encouraged my son to move for school because I didn't want our issues in his life. Sure enough, he's thriving.

The servant could not pay his debt back on time and the king ordered for him and his family to be sold as payment for the debt. If our country walked according to the fear and reverence of this consequence of debt, I believe we would be living in a different world! The amazing part of the passage is that the king had mercy on the servant. Obliged his plea for forgiveness and set him free of his debt. As a person who is a citizen of a primary destination for missions (Haiti), I'd really ask people interested in going/coming to reconsider and really ask yourself if what you're doing is going to benefit or harm the people you intend to help. Humanitarian tourism is detrimental specially to orphans, who are deprived of food in order to look famished when you visit (so you can feel compassion and give more) when the orphanage can afford to feed them properly. That's just an example. Google how so much help allegedly sent to Haiti never made it to the people who need it and don't become part of the problem. Help but be smart about it.
Mr. Ramsey, I don't understand a comment you made. This young man said his parents are struggling financially just to pay the mortgage. You replied' it isn't your responsibility. Her clients didn't always pay on time and quite a few times my mum was short for the mortgage payment. As a responsible member of the family, I stepped up and gave my mum every penny that I earned. We, as a family wouldn't have made it without coming together. While not legally responsible there is a moral and ethical obligation to help out....not to mention it is a loving gesture. Why not mention helping his parents? You don't abandon family in need. This young man could wait a few months....see his parents through their hardship and then go on his mission. He could do both, since service is the mission.
He said "we're one house payment away from losing our house" which sounds like he is on the mortgage. @@FortuneSeek3rz Yeah I know, but generally the wage floor for those on the lower income scale, generally near minimum wage, typically reflects the cost of living in that area.
Dave, do you have any control on who advertises on your page? Not interested in Bloomberg ads!
Join the military. They'll give you a purpose and you won't be dependent on mommy and daddy to house you like a 22 year old manchild.
When he get home he might be homeless
Hey bro my chaplain from the Army was a missionary and found a wife. He went to 🇧🇷 and returned with an eye 🍬 lol. We gave him hard time about it but after years of solid married he brought a lady to the 🇺🇸 and give that family a new opportunity. He lives a happy marriage with 2 kids. He was forced to speak Portuguese and help with church with his 2nd language skills. You can get many different opportunities as missionary so you should take it seriously.
Dave ain’t with the “Sh!ts” when hes wearing thaf royal blue shirt......🤷♂️😂😂
He sounds a lot like me, bit negative. And I just quit my job, 😂Except I’m way more honest, I’d be like I wanna get the f out, i don’t believe in god and I probably won’t come back from wherever the trip is.
How about giving that money to your parents and working hard to get them out of foreclosure.
If his parents can’t afford that house, they need to move and find something more affordable. The caller giving his parents money? That wouldn’t solve the problem, that would just be a bandaid.

Missions are a waste of money and time. Only purpose is to recruit people into Christianity through fear because they are less fortunate
So he’s not allowed to find joy in serving and getting that benefit?
If you need to go on a mission to find your purpose, I don't have great expectations for your future.
No one cares
My advise, reject the teachings of christ, kneel before the Goat, and all shall be revealed.
There's no good evidence of a God. Better to save his money.
Using Religion as a crutch like so many others. Smh
Isn't that a girls name his voice so deep can barely understand what he's saying
