You sooo do not need to be embarrassed for not going to the dentist for 5 years. I've been working on some social research about oral health care and I've spoken to so many people that hadn't been to the dentist since they were a child in school (there's a free school dental program in my country), before finding a place that's consciously trying to be accessible. There are so many factors that make it hard to go regularly and I'm so glad you found a way to go that's accessible for you - and that you're drawing attention to it!
I don’t know what I expected from the title but for whatever reason dental care wasn’t on my radar. I appreciate the call out of its importance though!! It’s so frustrating that American insurance separates your mouth from the rest of your body, despite how little sense that makes.
Not just America. In my European country all doctor visits are free and yet when I visit the dentist, not all of it gets covered by the insurance. It may not be hundreds or thousands but when so much of my paycheck goes towards taxes why do I still need to bring a bunch of cash with me every time I visit the dentist? How is getting a surgery on a different part of the body free but getting a filling costs me more than a day worth of pay?
Wonderful as always. I’m 58 and my days of going out to get sh!t faced are definitely over. I have what I call my “no drinking on school nights” rule. As in, if I feel like one drink Friday or Saturday I go ahead. Although we just did a 7 day cruise and there was multiple drinks every day. I played the flute for many years and that’s a retirement goal to take lessons again. I haven’t played in years. I also have a keyboard, but my brain is so wired to one note on one clef. Multiple notes over 2 clefs just confuses my brain! At the moment I seem to watch more RUclips than TV, so it’s videos like yours, home renovations and clips from bridal shows.
Im terrified of the dentist, but i found a good one. I wanted to note that women in peri and menopause have increased gum issues, so dental care is very important. Also, I am a sober girl for 16 years, love my decision and 10 out of 10 would recommend. ❤
very good video. I want to ditto everything you said about dental care. As someone who had dental issues due to undiagnosed sjogrens, I can tell you that dental issues can cause a LOT of health problems and they are quick to worsen!
I’ve never been a big alcohol person (probably due to my uncle being an alcoholic and me being a control freak) so I always like juice or tea drinks and I can tell how much it’s engrained in our culture when I would have new friends be like “ooooh can you not have alcohol? Why aren’t you drinking?” And when I explain I just don’t really care for the taste they just stare at me. I’m not saying I won’t ever have any because if they have a sangria sure I will, but it’s not something I have to have.
I am so very glad you talked about alcohol consumption. Right before the pandemic, I realized that I needed to make a change and get my drinking under control, and I am so thankful I did. Both my physical and my mental health have improved significantly partly because of reducing alcohol intake.
I haven't been to a dentist for about ten years as I was very afraid and had to deal with so many other things, but then, after I moved to another city, I found one who was specialized for anxious people like me. They were so nice there, so now I go there every six months without feeling scared. When I was there for the first time, I was so stressed I started to cry and usually I would feel so much ashame because of that, but they treated me so nice , whiped my tears away and asked very often if I was okay, so I felt completely safe. My last dentist ten years before war terrible so it was really hard for me to force myself to make an appointment. I will never like going to a dentist, but it doesn't scare me anymore, thanks to all the nice people there. You play the piano so wonderful
I just bought a foam roller, but haven't used it yet and kept seeing mixed messages about their uses and benefits. You bringing up stress relief and nervous system regulation convinced me I need to be using it!
Loved this no-nonsense video! I love how you actually gave ideas and advice on how to manage stress because every self-help video, listicle, article, whatever out there just simply says, "Manage your stress" and leaves it at that. That stresses me out just typing that! HOW?! So thanks for the practical tips! I also haven't played my very beautiful keyboard my husband got me and I want to, but it's hard now that I've forgotten so much. I will kiss my gray cat muchly on his furry head for you :)
Cheers from a fellow Diet Coke drinker. We check so many of the other health boxes, it's okay if you enjoy it within reason! Yes, my body my choice. Politics and Health.
This video called me out within the first few minutes because I also haven't been to the dentist since 2019 and it is largely because of anxiety (of being judged by the dentist because of my lack of dentist visits).
Yes to the dentist! I didn’t go for 7/8yrs because of anxiety and I finally just did it and now I take excellent care of my teeth, especially now that I’ve invested in Invisalign. I currently don’t have dental insurance so I’m looking into how much paying out of pocket would be because I refuse to let my teeth devolve again. Also, the alcohol thing too! I rarely drink for all the reasons you listed haha.
Yes, the Great British Bake Off is a favorite. I watch it with my 23 year old daughter when she comes over. I like British shows on Acorn, and also sitcoms. Podcasts during my 30 minute commute to work, and reading cozy mysteries.
I have Netflix and my parents don’t so on Saturday mornings we FaceTime and watch it together- I live in Korea they are in the states. It’s our mother daughter fun time we always love when a new season comes out!
Thank you for another great video! So many important points here. But I have to admit, I was slightly distracted by your arms- they look freaking awesome!!!
Even if you have the money, dental insurance doesn’t pay for much. A yearly fee makes sense. My dentist offers a yearly fee for discounts on everything. Although, I’m limited to one office, but they offer everything. I’m 64, and you really need to take care of your teeth as you age. Especially to chew those crunchy veggies! Alcohol gives me a headache and then I can’t sleep. It ruined the enjoyment part.
I just had my last wisdom tooth removed so have been watching lots of tv. I like the house hunting shows where they take people round to 3 houses and they have to choose one, it is a fun game to try guess which they will pick. Or i got into all the game shows on tv, here in new zealand we get all the british game shows so tenable, tipping point, the chase were all great to keep me occupied while i recovered.
Oh my gosh this is so funny I am going to the dentist today and I have not been since 2022 I have mega fear which drives my anxiety through the roof but I know I need to go m, I’m literally getting ready to go and clicked on your video.Makes feel better knowing I’m not the only one it’s literally going to cost me £200

As someone who's a little older than you, I can honestly say that, while the third area of concern might seem in one's brain to justify continuing to indulge in the second for reasons of relaxation and recovery, one reason I have found for not struggling with being sober for the entirety of this year though I don't really struggle with alcohol anyway is that recovery from the way it slows you down and knocks you out becomes its own detriment. While I understand the felt need to reset, alcohol is less and less effective at that while causing more and more difficulties even with really moderate use. What threw a lot of us off previously is that studies would show something equivalent to a glass of wine at night actually being beneficial, potential addiction issues aside. That no longer seems to be the case, and it makes you kind of wonder what methodological tomfoolery may have led to the earlier conclusions.
From what I understand, the issue is that people who NEVER drink alcohol usually do this because of health reasons, so the negative health outcomes are more likely to be due to the underlying health reasons that the people stopped drinking for, not from abstaining from alcohol.
Speaking of alcohol and artificial sugar intakes: would you be able/willing to do a video about sparkling waters? I love sparkling water. It’s basically my new pop. There’s brands like La Croix, Meijer, and Ice Mountain that make sparkling water without sweetener, sodium, etc. there’s also sparkling water that’s more like pop, like Evolution (juice is added), Sparkling Ice (they have caf & non caf with artificial sweeteners in it), & even Meijer brand versions called Crystal Quenchers (with sweeteners). These all have various effects on our health even if they’re the “healthier” version of pop.
possibly! but to be honest, that's really not my forte deep diving into nutritional aspects of different sweeteners and artificial flavors. you're definitely better off listening to a registered dietitian for that info :)
Nothing wrong with a bit of trash TV - “bubblegum for the eyes”😂. The only thing better than Bake Off is the kids version - Junior Bake Off! Those 9-12 year olds are unbelievably good 👍
Playing music is such a good idea. I used to play clarinet but it always seems like it would be such an ordeal to pull it back out 🙃 I don’t know why that seems like an “ordeal” but scrolling twitter for 3 hours is fine, so backwards lol
LOL Justina showing us how to drink a Diet Coke 😅. Getting ready to try the protein Diet Coke trend. I hadn’t gone to the dentist in like 10 years and wound up having so much work done it was ridiculous.
I'm glad that for some reason (maybe because I don't like to socialize much or maybe it's the other way around) I never really ended up drinking alcohol much or enjoying it. I'd have a little bit when at a family party or something but most of the time I didn't even like the taste enough for it to be worth the sluggishness or simply my arms feeling heavy after only drinking a little bit. But I'd try it here and there, thinking that maybe this time there would be a drink I like. Well, between that and the research about even small doses being harmful, I've been trying to put a stop to the social pressure to have even a little bit at parties. I'm doing other things to be healthy, so why ruin it with something I don't even enjoy? And I'd rather consume those calories in the form of chocolate anyway.
I have a very difficult job that leads to burn out and compassion fatigue and I absolutely watch trash TV to let my brain rest and escape. I also watch Love is Blind! Other trash i consume - all the 90 day fiance shows. I especially love married at first sight Australia. My other go to easy show is watching Friends for the millionth time.
Dude. I just adore you. You played my songs, you understand the gem that is the Great British Bake Off, and you showed an adorable kitty who will take your shit, but doesn't like it. LOL. Thanks for adding some more joy to our world.
Been a long time silent watcher. I really love your informative videos and your no bs attitude lol i will be happy to give my two dogs and cat a forhead kiss for you 🥰
another thing I would like to point out about alcohol is alcohol and perimenopause do not go well together. Our bodies have issues processing alcohol during this time (I have found out the hard way, night sweats/panic attacks) so now I just drink water and tell people my body just doesn't tolerate it because I just don't want to feel that way, not worth it for me
Just curious, what new camera didja get?! Also, I didn't start seeing the dentist regularly until I was 29 years old lol. edit to add: the piano playing was just delightful!

I have NO CLUE WHY it’s not considered part of regular insurance! (Except I do it’s called capitalism ooooop 😩)
Blame dentists a hundred or so years ago. We should have dental care included with regular health care, but dentists at the time protested.
Not just America. In my European country all doctor visits are free and yet when I visit the dentist, not all of it gets covered by the insurance.
