Neil Peart IS celebrated as the greatest drummer of all time. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago, ending their four decade long journey. There is simply no replacing such a monster player, brilliant lyricist and loyal friend..Neil was a great human being who also just happened to be the most important, intelligent and influencial rock drummer in history!
Most important songs to check out:
    Xanadu (live video 82)
    Freewill
    Natural Science
    2112
    YYZ (live video in RIO)
    La Villa Strangiatio

They don't even miss a beat in this amazing live performance. When the “Permanent Waves” album was released in January of 1980 this song was suddenly everywhere. It’s still amazing that only 3 guys could deliver such a massive and complex sound, and it wasn’t just something they were able to do in the recording studio with overdubs and tricks, they were able to do it all live as well.
I was lucky enough to see them on every tour since 1978 when I was 12, until their last tour in 2015. They never put on anything less than an incredible show. It was worth going to see them just for Neil’s drum solo.

Three premier musicians playing prog/rock fusion! Alex’s guitar work, Geddy’s bass (credits Chris Squires (Yes) influences) and Neil’s drumming…amazing what just three people could produce. Geddy’s playing got me started playing bass many (many) years ago. I use a Fender Geddy Lee signature J bass. And they sound exactly the same live!

Nothing like the rush from listening to a new Rush song. Three of the best musicians ever period .They are the masters of Progressive Rock , seamless transitions from one time signature to another . The rabbit hole is deep but worth the journey , you have over 40 years of great music to discover. Now that you have discovered Rush , you can start to understand why my generation thinks most new music is crap , we grew up listening to Rush , Pink Floyd , YES , Led Zeppelin , The WHO ,ELP , and lots more. But at the top is Rush , and Pink Floyd . So keep on reacting and we will keep watching.

Neil Peart was a great, great drummer. He died just a couple of years ago, which put an end to Rush. The three of them (that's right, there were only three guys in that band!) were really united, and each of them contributed their own uniqueness to make one very unique band. Neil Peart also wrote nearly all of the lyrics to their songs. Keep on Rockin', Zay! (and don't forget about King Crimson).

Even tho by this time they had mostly been left to themselves to make whatever album they were going to make, of course there was always pressure to make it radio friendly and a radio hit. The first time the band were challenged like that, their 2112 was almost literally a fuck you to the labels, and they thought there was a very good chance it was their last so they went out on their terms. Except it exploded and gave the freedom they had on permanent waves, a few albums later.
But still, the pressure was there. This imo was also a classic rush fuck you response, but in their own funny and ironic way they challenged themselves to satisfy the label and the radio stations, but again do it on their terms. They consciously tried to make something radio friendly, and just like with 2112 they pretty much took it literally and wrote about what they were going through, and made a song about the joy of radio. But listen to Geddy’s vocal of Neil’s lyric! It’s really just a question of your honesty, yeah your honesty. That’s as aggressive as I’ve ever heard him sing a lyric. Scream, sure. But that emphasis on the second yeah your honesty, always gives me a little chill. He’s talking right to someone at their label, I’m sure of it.
Musical note: I think they started futzing around with keyboards as early as farewell to kings, but this album was where they started using them regularly as background depth but also some splashes. My favorite part of this song is always the plain piano at the very end, like a honky tonk. Also the bells which makes it sound magical and indeed carried by air waves.
Sorry, this song is just so great.

Let me hook you up bro with some history about Rush: All (3) band members Geddy Lee: Singer, bass guitar and plays the piano; Alex plays the lead guitar that riff you heard in spirit of radio was him where you said what is that? And Neil Pert is the Genuis drummer who not only drums but plays multiple instruments too with his drum plus he's the song writer of all the songs written for Rush...These guys are geniuses and they are inducted in the hall of fame of rock and roll. They are a once in a lifetime band.

"That sound" is Alex's guitar! He plays with his palm lightly on the strings, which gives a "plunk" instead of the usual more ringing tones :-) He is also using a few effects pedals - I believe a "phaser" set to a slow rate and very little effected sound mixed in.
Others have suggested an excellent list of Rush songs to do - "La Villa Strangiato" ("La Vee Yah Strawn Gee Auto") is mind-blowing! Find the live version from the "Rush In Rio" video - the "Lerxst Rant" (Alex playing the clown) at a little over 6 minutes in is hilarious!
A couple others that I don't see suggested below are "Leave That Thing Alone" (the Time Machine tour video is excellent) or, one a more serious note, "Red Sector A" (the #0th Anniversary tour video is, imo, the best video version).

Recommend you check the Rush '2112' album - they toured on it live in the late '70's all over creation when I was an older teenager. It's always been among the hallmark productions for them.

great reaction. If you enjoy Rush, I suggest you check out the song Xanadu, live from the Exit Stage Left concert (1981). Its one of the best live perfomances of any band. I saw the 6 times and they were always great.

When I first heard Rush many years back (1979 or so), the drumming really struck me. I always loved Geddy and Alex and their work, but the drumming always just hit me. Something about the way Neil composes and plays has set them apart in a way I just have never heard with any drummer in any other band. I know people say the same about Bonham, but it's different even if in a similar vein...

Check them out doing it live. Either under the title Best Intro Ever or Live at the SARS concert in Toronto (with about 500,000 watching).

We had some of the BEST music ever in the 60's and 70's. You HAVE to check Stevie Ray Vaughn playing Texas Flood live at El Mocambo. WATCH it, not just listen. You'll see and hear a guitar legend. Check out AC/DC doing thunderstruck. You'll need neck braces after some of my generations music. Your wild ride has just begun.

You gotta do 2112 and look at the lyrics. Crazy song full of changes and insane drumming and solos, and the lyrics tell a story with different vocal styles and musical themes being different characters in the narrative

Spirit radio one of my all-time favorite rush single songs because to me they have singles and then they have an entire album call it a musical play. But I was lucky enough to see them in concert in Connecticut during their Roll the Bones tour! And I waited all night to hear Spirit of radio they played a good three hours and then they told us to hold on for a moment and they left the stage but they didn’t remove the instruments and then they came back and they did an hour plus encore and yes they played a very extended version of Spirit of radio absolutely loved it. So you want advice about rush if you want to hear there are two albums that kind of connect the whole way through almost like one song 2112 ( said 21. 12. )
    Then Farewell to Kings
Fly by Night was the album before 21 12 , I hope I’m not confusing you anyway those three are definitely a good place to start I think he already heard Tom Sawyer there’s a bunch of them hemispheres that’s an album roll the bones I’m sure once the rush friends watch one of it though though enjoy it because I’ve been watching them listening to them enjoying them cents the fly by night album middle 70s 1970 that is yeah I was a teenager in the 70s anyway as always keep up the good work don’t worry about it leaving you speechless you should’ve seen the way we reacted as always peace love and joy to you and yours

Danny Carey from tool has a huge influence from the drummer of rush, Neil Pert. Legends passed down. And this is progressive Canadian sound. Alot of people didn't get it, but you do. You will appreciate the influence. The musianship.

A glockenspiel is what's making the noise you asked about.
Yyz in Rio or Working Man (Time machine tour in Cleveland) would be good ones to try next. 🤘😁
