okay So I really like the positive outlook, not something that is super common in Media. But, big But Around the 20 minute mark, saying that Cars work better than "public alternatives" essentially destroys all credibility regarding infrastructure if population density is not taken into account.
Let me explain why, yes in theory we have infinite energy and finite materials, both things that can be transported. We have incredibly finite Space. Cars are incredibly space inefficient, per person transported you need parking, at origin and destination as well as quite a bit more energy.
Car based dense population is antithetical to Human well being even when it is electric cars. They are loud, they waste space through parking compared to rail based infrastructure, have significantly lower throughput, are often slower. Cause emissions in the form of wear and tear of tires not only exhaust.
Cars are good for Rural applications, and personal freedom of destination. But for almost any other setting they are a waste of energy, materials, and space and Therefore Money. If the public is to invest in infrastructure it should at least be efficient.

Thanks for doing a podcast on Infrastructure! I'm a civil engineer and I work for a municipality in transportation. Our culture not valuing maintenance hit me right in the heart. Its so hard to get funding allocated to the basics instead of the high visibility projects. Politicians choose the projects and they feel like if the projects aren't new construction that the citizens won't see the benefit of electing them. Usually they just choose the project that a small handful of citizens have been pestering them about regardless of whether it provides any value. I would definitely check out the work of Strong Towns if you want to chase the link between government finance and infrastructure.

Wow this is a great point! The standard view of Maintenance of existing infrastructure being a money loser with no value is inherently wrong. I deal with Facilities Maintenance.

@@GrovesCustomLumber for us our number one issue is rain events destroying storm water infrastructure and roads with poor subgrade or not enough base material.

Thank you for this interview. I love the functional perspective of abundant energy being at the forefront of an energy transition and that the human value of infrastructure is not monetary. Very much appreciated.

I loveeee this, growing up in the thirld world then moving to the US, i only ever wanted basic consistent infrastructure, never fast cars or big houses or opulent things, only a basic life with loved ones. Everyday i wake up and im still thankful most for my water, electricity and internet outside of living beings.

Enjoyed listening to it. I do still think there are issues related to solar. The issue is with energy storage and the use of lithium which is required for energy storage(and its availability).

    • @andrewsteinhaus8267

The only issue is NIBY. We need more transmission lines. Lithium is not the only form of storage.
Look at form energy. Or redflow

Yes and No. This viewpoint comes quite firmly from a limited energy viewpoint and a position of having to use all energy we produce.
Don't get me wrong we should use all energy we produce. But there are plenty of options to store energy without batteries or electricity. These fields just need to develop further. One option is the use of potential energy, when its cheap pump it up, when its expensive let the weight fall and run an electric motor. (People already do this in Switzerland and get quite rich!)
There are also simply many renewable power sources, wind is strongest in the Evenings and Mornings, when we do not have quite as much solar. Using multiple sources drastically reduces the gap. Thermal power is relatively constant.
For Homes you can even use a very large water storage that is extremely well insulated and store heat, for private individuals thats the majority of energy we Use.
Hydrogen generation will become more attractive the more renewable energy surplusses there are.
And last but not least simply changing how we consume energy will happen when prices get more extreme. Realistically we wont stop using Hydrocarbons for a while, and once almost all of our energy is provided by renwables, it really will not be an issue to start a coal power plant, for those few days in the grand scheme of things.

*Constructive criticism alert* could you please record these podcast at a slightly higher level I don’t mind turning it down but if it’s not loud enough, I can turn it up anymore. Tried on two different devices and my car..
