I had to watch 10,000 vintage synth videos before the almighty algorithm reluctantly suggested this video. Great video! Looking forward to more. Proud to be your 451st subscriber.
Thanks a lot Monkey Unit, much appreciated! Yeah, I hear you, the algorithm unfortunately holds the power over a small channel like mine, but I am honored to have your subscription! There are more restoration videos on my channel, synth-related music, etc. so I hope you enjoy. (And feel free to spread the word if you think anyone else might be interested, fight the algorithm!)
Thanks so much Carolus! I appreciate the kind words, and I always have fun writing little tunes to demo whatever project I'm working on. You can hear more tunes on my other videos or over on my SoundCloud... Thanks again!
I am magically notified the second my son Jeremy puts up another video and this one is well worth the 15 years it took to complete especially with stereo headphones on. Well Done Jeremy and amazing in it's detail and information as well as the music and sound.
Thanks for the link, I finally had time to watch this whilst sat in front of an SH-1000! I've had an immaculate one on loan for two years and it dates from March of 1974 funnily enough, so just one month younger than yours. Fantastic job on this, very satisfying to see the end result and the music was fantastic too. Hats off. Here's to the next restoration in 15 years time. ;)
Hey Alex, thanks so much for checking this out and for the compliments! Yeah, I've been admiring your collection of synths for a while now, including that SH-1000. Now that I've given the SH-1000 back to my friend, there's a synth-shaped hole in my heart that can only be filled by... an Arturia Polybrute! I'm pretty sure that will be my first synth purchase, still checking things out. Thanks again, and I may do the Univox Mini-Korg restoration next, hopefully in less than 15 years! And I'll look forward to your next video as well.
This was the only synth my NE England state school had around 1980 so it was the first synth I ever played. Your painstaking restoration to a condition better than new is an amazing and delightful thing of beauty. 15 years are not too long to wait.
Wow, very cool story! Thanks for the kind words, very glad you enjoyed it. My friend had completely forgotten about the synth, so it turned out to be a pleasant surprise for him.
Jeremy, this is one of the best vids ever loaded up to YT! The passion you provide to safe this beautiful synth is inspiring. Thank you!! (BTW: could you please move over here to Hamburg, Germany? We will happily provide a cosy and fluffy bed, healthy food and treats for the rest of your life, while you work on all our vintage synths? So we all can live happily ever after. And yes, we even have some clumsy cats for boosting your forthcoming artful videos into million of views for the younger generation :)
Pan Atlantik, thanks so much! I always get inspired by watching restorations, so I'm glad I'm doing the same for somebody else. Wow, that sounds pretty good to me! I have received the same suggestion from my wife that our cat should be making appearances in the videos somehow. :)
Once we got home I watched the whole amazing video including the funky song at the end - beyond meticulous and excellence Jeremy. The process and results of these projects are so special I was thinking the Management of Roland and of Rhodes might be interested in them and realize the tremendous historical and technical value of both of them. Perhaps even a consulting role for you? What do I know, I’m just your Dad.
did you have to replace the springs to fix the key action, im trying to figure out if i can clean and service my sh-1000 myself thanks for this video. I'm curious why didn't you get fix the scuffs and scratches on the control panel or repaint it, or is it not possible?
No, I kept the stock springs, as they were (just cleaned them). The real improvement in function came from cleaning the contacts (noise and intermittent problems disappeared), then the feel was much improved by cleaning and re-greasing the action surfaces with the Molykote 111. The condition of the felt could be important too, but it seemed OK on this unit.
Thanks TangoVision! I didn't take any notes, and I had to give back the synth to my friend, but basically it comes down to the filter and envelope settings. Maybe you can freeze frame the video at times to see the position of the controls? It's pretty easy to use once you get used to the controls and what they do.
@@JeremyParkerMusic I’m a professional guitarist who is currently going through a vintage analog synth obsession! But luckily piano was my first instrument! I did try the freeze frame. But we’re you shaping the sounds through the programming or combining them with any of the presets. That super staccato sound was great and funky. I did buy that SH-1000 today that was for sale locally, it sounds great!
@@groovesyndicate9513 OK, I understand! For that last song anyway, I made all those sounds using the controls. Unfortunately, you can't combine the sounds with the presets; it's either a preset sound or one that is on the 'panel', so to speak. For that staccato sound, I was playing with the cutoff frequency of the filter, as I recall. Thanks! Well, congratulations, glad it worked out!
Thank you! Having some carpentry aspect to a project like this always makes it a bit more interesting I think, which is part of the reason I wanted to do it.
Hello, Can you say me please in thé vidéo where's the knob for tuning, my problem is that there is a difference in tuning between the low octaves and the high octave. Thank you
You can find the instructions for tuning the synth on page 18 of the PDF here: www.synthxl.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Roland-SH-1000-Service-Notes.pdf
So mine, on some waves and half of the presets, I get strong feedback and the notes actually hold after I release the key. The keyboard functions and makes noise, but I get the scratchy feedback and never ending notes. Any idea what it may be?
It sounds like maybe the presets are calling on the same waveforms that also have the feedback/note hold issue? If you can get the service manual online, on the schematic page for the VCO (page 4), there's a key on / key off voltage on terminal 11, maybe probe there to see if the key on/off is working there first. Does the ADSR affect this at all, like the release is just stuck on? That stuff is on page 7. A visual inspection of electrolytic caps is probably also a good idea. It's hard to troubleshoot from afar, sorry.
@@HimmyJohn I'm really not an expert on the synth, as the one I worked on didn't really have any issues (other than dirty pots/switches/key contacts), but if you want to chat further, my email is jrs1@rj3.net
Hi I was wondering if you had that original control panel side wood cheek. I have 2 SH-1000s (one restored, one for parts) and both are missing the control panel side wood cheek. I would prefer to put an original back on rather than make a replacement. Thanks very much.
Hi Peter, I only re-made the side panels, and I used the wooden cheek block that came with the synth. So sorry, I only have the old side panels. But it seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to make a new cheek block.
@@peterjankowski7409 I just checked, and I no longer have the original side panels. We had a flood in our basement last month, so I lost a lot of my wood and scrap pieces. They must have been in one of the bins that got soaked. Sorry about that.
I just bought an SH1000 and I find the resonance to be weak. I'm not able to get that signature squelchy Roland sound. Do you know if there's any way I can increase the power of the resonance from the inside?
There is a calibration procedure for the synth, including adjustments for the VCF on page 17 in the service manual. I linked to it in the description, and here's another link I found: www.synthxl.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Roland-SH-1000-Service-Notes.pdf Fig. 11 shows the trimpots you need to adjust, on the VFC board, and the location of this board is on page 3.
Hi! Great sound! I'm trying fix my sh1000 to and it is out of tune... even after waiting some minutes to warm up (and all modulations off), its osc isn't stable... It sounds like were a very slow LFO or some like that... I need to solve that first before calibrate it. Could you help me, please?
Hello Michel, does the rate of the slow LFO change with any control settings? If so, it could be dirty switches/pots, etc. Any contamination of the key contacts? There are so many ways the tuning/pitch can be affected, so it's tough to diagnose without having it in front of me. I did not have any real circuit issues with my friend's SH-1000, so I was lucky. Do you have the service manual and are you comfortable checking some of the voltages around the VCO board? (under the the top control panel)
@@JeremyParkerMusic @Jeremy Parker I checked the voltages and seemed fine. Could be some cap or transistor? I recorded a video to show better the issue. ruclips.net/video/MnTHcHrWUFA/видео.html
@@michelcury sorry for the delayed response, it looks like the tuning issue is like a really long portamento, so I wonder if the glide circuit or portamento is being fully disengaged when the switch is turned off. The top right of page 11 / diagram 7-2 when you're looking at the schematic, there's a section with the input from the glide switch, then an output to 'TO VCO GLIDE' that you'd want to check to make sure it doesn't have some residual voltage drift when the control is turned off. Same thing with the portamento switch. If that's alright, check the terminal 7 on the VCO-1 schematic (page 4) and follow it to the output of the op-amp buffer (pin 6), making sure it isn't drifting after a key is pressed, like you did in the video.
My friend, my sh-1000 is almost fixed 🙏🏻 I'm hearing in high frequencies a little distorted/squeezed sound. It's easier to notice in square waveform in high octaves. Is it normal? I can't check this situation in your demo :( Thank you one more time for the help 🙏🏻
Hello Michel, glad to hear you have made progress with your SH-1000! I don't think a distorted sound is normal, but maybe you can upload a video/sample of it?
Thank you very much! Hmm, not sure on that one, but perhaps something between the keyboard and the two PCBs that the keyboard harness plugs into. Maybe a bad/dirty ground contact or buss bar contact? I'd suggest some Deoxit on those connectors (and probably all the connectors if you have it apart). Although I didn't have that issue exactly, it seemed all my intermittent noise issues were solved by cleaning the key contacts themselves.
I'm playing chords on my Rhodes (which I have another video on my channel, if you're interested in that instrument). Congratulations! (I'd pick one up if I had the chance...)
