I've been late to an appointment with my kids. I apologized and asked if it's possible to accommodate or if we could reschedule. They were extremely forgiving and there happened to have been a cancellation so they could still see us. Being polite cost me nothing and it got me where I needed to be. Ya hear that, honey? POLITENESS IS CHEAP.

It makes me sad when Charlotte says she has no sympathy for people who are late. As soon as she saw me she turned around to take me into my appointment but I just told her to go and get her dinner and that I was happy to sit and wait as long as she needed. I never mind waiting for Drs because it's not like it's a one size fits all for each patient! But the thing I hate is if you arrive a few minutes late and apologise and the receptionists just refuse to even let you sit and wait until the end of the Dr's list or even ask the Dr if they have time for you. The strong desire a 2 year old girl has to dress in pink is real. I am actually of the mind of that woman, that it is important for children to be given all sorts of colors of clothing to wear.
We did that with our first child. From 2-4 all she wanted to do was wear pink. When a toddler decides they want something, anything, it is a hill they are willing to die on. This is every desire, every moment of the day.
As parents, hopefully fully formed adults, we have to decide what hills we are prepared to die on every day. Clothing color simply isn’t one of those hills.
Our younger daughter also went through this phase. There are more important things than arguing about clothing colors. Just let those children wear whatever color they want. There is not enough time in the day for that argument…with a toddler.

Time Blindness is something many neurodivergent people especially those with ADHD (like myself) have. This means We don’t have an “internal clock” and we cannot estimate how long things will take. I set about a dozen alarms every day to remind myself to eat, take my meds, when I need to leave to start work
on time according to Waze… my breaks/lunch/meetings/appointments… I always put events in my calendar for 30mins before it actually is so that i have a higher chance of being on time. I seriously try so hard every single day and people have called me “lazy” and “rude” for “disrespecting other people’s time…” I am often paralyzed with Shame about this so I isolate myself/don’t go out or do things with people unless I have to, or your are neurodivergent too. I also get panic attacks when I know I’m going to be late. Except while I’m actively driving I always communicate if I’m going to be late. Charlotte, I’m honestly so glad that you don’t know what it is like. You make it seem like it’s some moral failing or personal attack when really it is oftentimes a legitimate aspect of a truly debilitating disability. I understand it isn’t fun to have to wait for people. And your feelings are valid. And your time is valuable. You can absolutely talk to your friends about it if it is a behavior pattern that bothers you. I’m not trying to dismiss your experience either. I just want to point out that there are often things completely out of our control but not like a family emergency, more that some of our brains are just wired completely differently. and we already beat ourselves up enough for being a burden or inconveniencing people we care about. Sometimes a little bit of patience or compassion can go a long way. You don’t know what someone else is going through. I
Want to make it clear that I am not saying Charlotte’s experience is not valid either. Just that there are lots of reasons why this is incredibly hard for some people.

If you know you have problems with being on time then it falls solely on you to try and be on time and not yell and scream and the people working there. You can’t expect them to hold 2 or 3 appointments because you might miss the first one. Or the doctor to change there hours because you can’t get there before it closes. You know you have trouble being on time that is for you to figure out, not everyone else. You can’t make plans for dinner with someone and expect them to make several reservations in case you don’t show up on time. Again that is something you have to figure out not everyone else!

Originally, blue was for girls and pink was for boys. They considered blue calm and feminine (especially pastels). The Virgin Mary is often depicted in artwork wearing blue. Pink was a derivative of red--a strong "masculine" color. If you think about it, red is often associated with strong emotions like anger and passion, and with things like war and blood.

So, I'm going to be upfront here. I am the person that is always late. For me it has to do with depression and having to fight a whole war in my head to force myself to go anywhere. I was fired from my first job because I was always late. But befire anyone comes for me, I recognize that it's a problem and it is something that I have been seriously working on for years and have majorly improved upon. Anyways, I say all this to say that I have been late to many a doctor's appointment, but I have NEVER been so late that I was turned away. Same here. I always say to people, “however mad you are at me for being late, multiply it by a thousand because that is how mad I am at myself”. People need to at least understand that it isn’t done from a place of malice, trying to hold anyone up, or control people. I literally cannot wrap my head around accurately gauging how long it takes me, plus all the stuff I forget I need to do before I walk out the door (starting to write routines and checklists did help some), and adding in enough time for buffer but not so much that I feel like I’m wasting time just twiddling thumbs. I cannot count the number of times I have been late to appts (even sleeping through a couple because I was overly optimistic about being able to get myself out of bed), and every time, *every time*, I am extremely apologetic, call and ask if I should simply reschedule, and every time, I am met with respect and understanding and often a, no problem, we are backed up so come on in( I usually schedule appts later in the day for that reason, hack!)

Nope. Sorry but neurologic damage IS a SOCIAL disability. Your morphine-requiring dissbility is NOT the same as the girl down the street with Autism or someone else with neurologicly driven impulse control issues. Calling her a "fake" may make you feel superior, but you are just more able than the person you describe, and your presumptions and behaviour make you recognizable to other disabled people as an an "Ablist." Thus, while I also would have apologized on her behalf to the staff, I know better than to imagine ANY OF US are above such ultimately self-humiliating behaviour -- we all get older, we ride in cars & planes, we cross the street. We each are at risk for not being able to control ourselves. So use your able mind to be spiritually generous. Yes, it's good to apologize to & appreciate those impacted, but also spread understanding & "don't judge lest ye be judged"
      - as chronic morphine use WILL damage YOUR prefrontal cortex/impulse control soon enough. (Look it up)

Some of the worst people I have ever met in my entire life were nurses and doctors. And some of the best people I've met in my entire life were nurses and doctors. But I can just tell this first lady is the former. The patient said her job wouldn't let her off work! What she supposed to do quit her livelihood? Also if they can ban her because she's too late that means a doctor can't be late to see you either now doesn't it? Why is it okay for the doctor to keep you waiting for an hour but it isn't okay for the patient. All of us take a VOW to do no harm. That nurse is doing a lot of harm. Harming a single mother and having an attitude about it. Like don't become a nurse if you don't have the patience to deal with this. Seriously I would rather you not into the medical field at all then be at denying people who genuinely need help because they don't fit into your box of socially acceptable behavior, and that makes you angry so you give that attitude and yell at them back then ban them forever. Would we tolerate a teacher treating a kindergartener like this? No? Then this person shouldn't be in the medical field and that behavior shouldn't be tolerated from nurses and doctors either. Just because someone looks like they are neurotypical doesn't mean they are.

Then they would reprimand the patient for having a dirty drug test. When in all reality they weren't dirty at all. Eventually, they did it too many times and they got caught. I have some horror stories when it comes to doctors and dealing with nurses. It's ridiculous to make an appointment, and have to wait months Beyond months to have that appointment scheduled or cancel on the tiniest thing. Then when you add in work, schooling, kids, or no vehicle. The lady could have been 2 minutes or 15 minutes late. I don't know cuz the video doesn't say. The thing that upsets me most is when you wait months and months for an appointment for them to cancel on you and then say they don't have anything available for another 6 months. I had receptionist do this to me. While standing there for the same doctor somebody will get another appointment that week. She is a professional and she is yelling and recording, it's not ok.

@@WhitneyDahlin However, the problem is that the doctor has other patients as well.
So if a patient has an appointment at 4:00 p.m. and comes at 4:15 p.m. the doctor may not have time to take that patient because he has the next patient at 4:30 p.m. However, the reception's attitude was unnecessarily mean and harsh.
