Awesome video! I wear my Explorer 125270 every single day-hiking, biking, swimming, running, snowboarding, etc. People are surprised I wear it in such tough conditions but that’s what it was made for! I’m interested to see how it keeps time as it ages, as well as when it will need servicing given the abuse it takes. Keep up the great work!
Thank you. A 100% that is what these watches are made for! I'm interested as well on how it hold accuracy with age and abuse, I guess so far so good. Cheers
I would be cool to do this test with other popular watches like the Longines Hydroconquest, Tudor Pelagos etc. Anyways, this is the kind of content we need, keep up the good work!
Absolutely love the content .. always wanted to know how the Rolex and G shock did in such extreme temperatures. Would love to see how cheaper automatic watches do. Also your nature photography is incredible 😍
Thank you for that, much appreciated. Yeah I'm interested to about other watches, and will re-visit this test again in the future with other watches. Cheers

Love your videos! Great channel❤ have a question though, after placing the watch in the ice box for the extreme temperature change experiment, is the watch affected in anyway? Did the watch suffer from internal condensation? Thanks in advance!
Thank you, Yes, they did all have condensation on the outside of them, that is why you saw me whipping them off before putting them in-front of the camera when checking accuracy. No condensation on the inside of the Rolex watches, a little on the other watches. Cheers
In your previous videos you had really opened my eyes how g shock is not the most durable watch, specifically in cold. It was funny that you had first hand experience of them failing but you still had to explain in comments why is it. I think most gshock users are not in that cold environments and if they are, they have it against their skin to warm up the battery. Everybody always say g shock is the most durable watch over and over, and then you claim as "amateur" watch enthusiast with your rolexes that they are more durable than the legendary g shock. I can imagine people not being able to digest that haha. At least from now on you can just link this video😀 You had mentioned also in previous videos that you are impressed that the rolex keeps great time regardless of the temperature. I didn't think much of that, just assumed if it's mechanical watch it will probably perform the same. So glad that you took the victorinox into this comparison, I could not believe the results. First losing time and a lot of it, then gaining time!? Very interesting. Awesome educational video with bit of beer silliness. Keep using your tool watches as your tool watches, I know you will!
Cool video idea! What better way to watch this video than by enjoying a beer! I’d better pause for a few minutes & get one…I’ve got a case of Straub (a good PA beer)!
Thank you. Yeah I have heard that from other viewers, but have seen do difference in their ability to withstand sub-zero temps. I think its more of a battery issue, the battery that are used aren't up to it. If you think about it that same G-Shock battery is in my stereo remote control. I'll keep looking into it, Cheers
Hi Cheyne, Great video the Rolex’s performed as you would expect for a great tool watch Also am impressed by the great escape reference. Coming from the UK our watches get the cold and wet but that type of extreme heat Good job mate
Thanks Dale. I was very impressed with how well the Rolex watches handled this test. Good catch with the Great Escape reference. Yeah, watches take a beating, even in everyday use and I don't think enough credit is given to that fact. Amazing mechanical engineering. Cheers
@cheynewalls any chance you'll review it soon? I also own an explorer 2 and a Sea dweller 43mm, and been eyeing a planet ocean boutique edition 43mm. Maybe you can make a comparison to your rolexes. Beautiful watch by the way.
@@proggyjoe Thanks - I use to own that same watch and I wish I would have done head to head against the Rolex. Look back at some of my older videos (ruclips.net/video/JxoTp_R7uqc/видео.html) I do mention why I sold it. As for a new head to head, we will have to see. I'll have to ask my camera assistance if he is OK with me putting his watch through that kind of punishment.
Hi interesting video we have spoken before about Rolex tool watches in mountaineering and I must admit I've never taken mine mountaineering because of the value of the watch . but I didn't realise how accurate mechanical watches are in extreme conditions two uses to seeing altimeter/GPS watches in the Alps and didn't consider that's mechanical watches would be more reliable think your photo artwork is great 👍 thanks John.
Good hear from you again John. Yes, that is why I go with well designed and built mechanical watches for when I'm out in the field for a week or two. I've had so many issues with battery powered watches dying on me. That being said, I do take a hand-held GPS, its bigger battery and to have the ability of insulate deep inside my backpack works best for me. Thank you for your kind words about my artwork. Cheers
@@cheynewalls hi thanks for your reply thinking about your watch test video I wonder if you have thought about doing a shock test with mechanical watches to see if that effect the accuracy of the watch. because if you where climbing ice the repetitive motion of the ice axe might effect the accuracy? (Some ice climbs can go on for hours) If you did the test for one hour you'd probably have your answer. (Maybe use a cheaper watch?). the reason why there was pocket watches is because the watchsmith had a problem with the accuracy with excessive movement on the wrist and pocket watches we normally kept in a chest pocket. This was one of the biggest problems to do with accuracy especially on boat navigation. The modern watches have created buffers inside the watch mechanism to allow for shock but it would be interesting to see how they would get on with repeated blows as they are designed as tool watches? What do you think thanks John.
@@JohnBowman-ut4dz Hi John, on past video I have done wood chopping (probably similar) and have seen no effect to my Rolex mechanical watches accuracy. I would love to do ice climbing video, hopefully in the future. I'm sure the mechanical watches have their limits with shocks, but it seems if that shock naturally happens, you might have bigger issues than your watch. (Say if you took a fall or something) All that being said, I think it smart to play it safe, if you do think it might damage your watch put the watch pocket or backpack.
Valiant effort with the beers... hmmm, what to do while waiting?!! A less fun, but realistic 'extreme' exposure test would be simply 2 hours in the freezer (+/- -20'C) which is pretty representative of 'mild' Arctic/cold sub-Arctic/alpine, then using a thermos flask of hot tap water (+/- 55'C) to represent a hot car or desert environment. Severe risk of fogging though... a couple hours acclimatisation between tests is kinder and maybe while under warranty! The real advantage of Sinn Ar tech. They should take it - big temp bumps do happen - easy to bump -20'C to 20'C going from cold conditions to indoors (nightmare for cameras, eh!) and less so extreme heat to a mountain lake or aircon.
Yeah we could have just gone from a home freezer to a hot car, but what would be the fun in that. We did get fogging on all the outside of the watch, that is why I had to keep cleaning them before putting in front of the camera. Will do this test again, as well as others like with different watches in the future. I'll be sure include a Sinn.
Thanks for the video! Great to see the mechanical watchs working so well! However, that g-shock must have an old battery or a malfunction. No way it will go after just 1.5H in the freezer…
Thanks, it was a fun video to make. I didn't think about that, I guess the G-shock is about a year old, but it has failed on me in the past while snow camping. Maybe that battery could have been damaged. I'll switch to a new battery for the next test.
Hi Cheyne, very good and very interesting video again from you! It is absolutely unbelievable how accurate ROLEX watches are under this shortly changing conditions! We know why we love them so much! But that the G-SHOCK (BTW I have the same 🙂) f*cked off under conditions of only zero degrees on the celsius scale is really SHOCKING! 😂 Best regards from overseas, PROST! 🙂
Good stuff Cheyne. Really enjoy your video's. Love the Rolex tool watches, I have a sub and looking forward to getting an Explorer II Polar Dial as well.
Awesome, thank you! Both are great watches, my Submariner is kind of becoming my every day watch or when I'm traveling to place I plan to scuba or swim and my Explorer II is my hiking and field watch. A prefect pairing. Cheers
That was a great watch, but I couldn't see having two GMT watches in my collection. See my video ruclips.net/video/kUg-wsIPaGs/видео.html for the full explanation. Cheers
I love mechanical watches but that's an unfair test since temperature extremes are a major weakness for standard quartz movements. Try comparing the two with magnetism, quartz will be fine and the mechanical watches are gonna struggle but that doesn't mean quartz is "tougher" they're just different.
You are a 100% right, they are different types of watches with difference functions. I just prefer mechanical watches because I spend a lot of time out outdoors with temperature extremes and as long as they can withstand airport security magnetism I'm happy. Giving I could drop a G-Shock out of a tree onto a rock and it would be fine. I included a quartz watch in this test just because every-time I do a video like this I get about 20 comments saying I should wearing a G-Shock watch, its "tougher". Like you said, this test just shows the difference between mechanical & quartz.
Dear Cheyne, have you already thought to test the Omega James Bond watch NTTD? It should be very tough and accurate. Cheers. (the price on the secondary market is also ok)
Thanks Joe suggestion, I would love to test the Omega James Bond, but I'll probably be testing the regular Seamaster in the future instead. The movements are pretty similar and in my personal opinion I favor the date model of the Seamaster. Either way it should be a good contest between the Rolex Submariner.
