Such a diverse talent too. Great character range. From 'Boys from the Black Stuff' to Dickens to 'Still Crazy' to this, but it's LIndsay Duncan who really steals the show in this one - sublime in anything she's in.
I can’t tell you how many times I have thought about this piece since it first aired - the soundtrack, the story of the ‘ice ships’, the slow unfolding of the story … it lives rent free in my head. I was only talking about it last night and then found it here this morning. I can’t thank you enough for posting this .
24 years on this should get another airing! Thank you so much. I loved it and still do. Back in the day before the world went crazy and every programme has to make a political statement! Everyone I knew said it was too slow but that's the whole reason for it's charm. The gradual build of getting to know the characters to the jaw-dropping end.
I loved this particular Stephen Poliakoff drama series - these marvellous collections pre digitalisation - the affection and respect he gives to these guardians of this picture collection, and the reluctant appreciation of Liam Cunningham's American businessman.
Awesome drama. Top tier acting, script & production. Nostalgia, eccentric characters & gripping stories all coalesce in a unique production. A photographic archive is being shut down without notice & the awesome staff roll out the stories & lives of those whose photos fill the archive. You have the character development of the staff (wouldn't you just love to work there?), & all the adventures, misadventures, tragedies, romance of those whose images have been captured in time. Who can bare to be forgotten? Touching, amusing, whimsical at points just to keep it light. The importance of remembrance. Poliakoff's masterpiece (in an already fabulous body of great works). Awesome stable of actors here: Lindsay Duncan (always intriguing to watch), Timothy Spall, Billie Whitelaw (who can forget her mad nanny in 'The Omen'?), Emilia Fox, Andy Serkis (LOTR Gollum), & Liam Cunningham (the chemistry between his & Duncan's characters is something else). 10/10 & really worth watching the whole 3 episodes in a binge.
It is little short of a tragedy that this superb piece has had some 64 visits. It says a good deal about the British attitude towards cinema. Thank you so much for posting.
John Wood I have just received the DVD I ordered of this fantastic piece of film and now I have realised it is on RUclips! I was about 12 when I watched this and it opened my eyes to history and photography and great performance art. It also led me to watching nearly everything that Spall has performed in. A timeless piece of magic.
One kind of knows that if Timothy Spall is in something its going tk be brilliant....and this is fabulously brilliant....thank you.....Suddenly noticed I was holding my breath during the story of Lilly. X
@@wordwarrior2350 Should this distract from the enjoyment of the piece? I,m a freelance croupier and have watched numerous appalling badly inaccurate casino scenes in major films. Sometimes you,ve got to look at the bigger picture, pun intended.
Oh my goodness!!! What an amazing movie. What superb acting by each and everyone involved. We salute them. Greetings from Australia. Please keep them coming.
Every building is historic to some extent It was owned by an insurance company so who knows they could have gone to funct sold it at auction you never know
I can't believe that I am watching this on 12/21 (2021) the same day he is recording this in the movie. Never saw this movie before. But I like Timothy from Harry Potter. We shall see what my verdict is at the end.
I guess they try to explain away the wobbly accent with the character mentioning that his mother came from Ireland as a 1st gen immigrant to the U.S. Watching this, I kept thinking, is the actor Irish? However, the other guy, his associate, did not ping as being not American. His accent sounded very unforced and relaxed and to me, convincing. I simply took no notice of it whereas with Cunningham, I was entirely distracted by the accent and picking apart the sounds and the rhythms that sounded like something else being papered over with an attempt at a general sort of American accent.
Shooting the Past (TV Mini Series 1999 A US property developer realises that he has a battle on his hands when he tries to renovate a London building containing a vast photographic collection and discovers that the library employees will resort to anything to thwart him. - imdb 8.5 S1.E1 ∙ Part One The staff of the Fallon Photo Library and Collection are left reeling when their new Americn owners decide to break up the archive and sell off the cherished Man Ray photographs. Archivist Oswald Bates is determined to fight to the end.
Interesting three-part series full of Mystery and beauty. Just get past the first bit where he is talking while eating and chewing with his mouth open. Disgusting. But it gets much better if you stick with it. I found all three parts here on RUclips. Thanks for posting.
I love this and have watched it many times. If you haven't seen it check out Spig's Story its a short addition to this were the characters talk about their favorite photograph. :-)
How painfully difficult, impossible deciding which pictures to save. I'll never understand human priorities. How could any "progressive" educational establishment teach more than that collection of images? I agree wholeheartedly with the American bloke regarding the Timothy Spall character, Oswald - Insufferable and what the hell is he wearing on his feet?!!
I saw this in 1999....and it has stayed in my mind ever since, I've recommended it to so many people.. And find myself now sending this link to my 18 & 19 Yr old daughters, who I know will love this in equal measure...The cast are phenomenal, and anything Stephen Poliakoff writes just shines with brilliance 👏👏
Timothy Spall is one of those rare actors that if you see his name in the cast list, you will definitely watch. He is first class.
Yes. Along with Toby Jones, Jason Watkins,Michael Sheen, Anne Reid and Alison Steadman. Anything they are in is guaranteed to be the best.
And he is such a fine character in so many British films of Dickens, and the like.
Such a diverse talent too. Great character range. From 'Boys from the Black Stuff' to Dickens to 'Still Crazy' to this, but it's LIndsay Duncan who really steals the show in this one - sublime in anything she's in.

Many years ago, Tyneside Cinema showed the whole series as part of a festival of TV. Marvellous.

First time I am watching this. Bravo, Mr. Poliakoff, Mr. Spall, entire cast!
Stunning in every aspect the acting, the camerawork and the exquisite music of Adrian Johnston. A lush experience.

True This was an excellent show... I started watching it in
Europe and enjoyed it immensely💯
It’s a tv show, not a film
This is the sweetest story..humanity versus the machine. God help us

Extraordinary on any level.

Photographs, a moment in time that can only be captured once.
Wonderful. I can't wait to see the rest of this miniseries. Thank you so much for posting this unbelievable emotive and moving episode.
Sublime soundtrack. Thank you.
Oh my goodness!!! What an amazing movie. What superb acting by each and everyone involved. We salute them. Greetings from Australia. Please keep them coming.
I think this might be the best Poliakoff drama.
Interesting this was made a couple of years before the explosion of social media. Five years later Oswald would be the King of the Odd Instagram.
Thanks so much for preserving this jewel!
thank you for posting
one of my all time fave ...unfolds leisurely.... and at a forgotten pace. quite superb. essential .
Wow, this is EXCELLENT!!!
Can’t wait for the next part!
Brilliant 👏👏👏👏
Incredible. Wonderful. Thank you so much. Part 2 tomorrow!
25:40 Right, "project" always spells disaster. Everything is under control. And why did they pick that historical building in the first place?
Every building is historic to some extent It was owned by an insurance company so who knows they could have gone to funct sold it at auction you never know

Brought here by the director's brother's channel, Professor Poliakov's Periodic videos.
Arj Barker is sooo cute in this... acting all shy in his little glasses and suit.... "like" if you're a true "Garnetthead" 👍
simply overwhelming.
Fabulous story and presentation.
The only criticism Liam has such a terrible American accent it kind of breaks the spell.
Lindsay and Timothy are fabulous

Sublime!
Why no synopsis, is this worth watching?
Is the interviewer the father of one of the inbetweeners.
It is a wondersful story....about us in the present preserving the past. WE ALL COME FROM SOMEWHERE, DON'T WE? - Patrick Genna
Wish I knew what this is all about?!!!!!!!!

I love Timothy Spall...he's such a great underappreciated actor. I watched this when it was on Tele. I loved it! Thank you so much for uploading!
I can’t believe that this brilliant drama isn’t available on iPlayer - after all, it is a BBC production! Immense thanks for uploading. 😃
I love this and have watched it many times. If you haven't seen it check out Spig's Story its a short addition to this were the characters talk about their favorite photograph. :-)
I've been searching for this for ages, thank you!

If you like this, you will like Lindsay Duncan & Matthew MacFadyen in Perfect Strangers. It's memorable.
Anything with Timothy in it is a winner, haven't seen any of his work that doesn't rate. Thanks for sharing this short series.
Was library privately owned, staff live on site??
A true masterpiece
