The WW2 Target They Never Expected

  • 2:15 AM, 28 February 1942. Bruneval, occupied France.
Under the cold moonlight, Flight Sergeant Cox's hands moved swiftly over the Würzburg radar. This German technology had decimated RAF bomber squadrons, its precision enabling accurate night-fighter interceptions. Dismantling it could turn the tide of the air war.
Cox wrenched free the pulse unit as Lieutenant Vernon pried loose the stubborn transmitter. Metal screeched, the sound piercing the night air.
Major John Frost's eyes scanned the perimeter. His men had taken the radar site swiftly, but now, time was against them. In the distance, engines rumbled - German reinforcements approaching from Bruneval village.
Suddenly, muzzle flashes erupted from the surrounding woods. Machine gun fire ripped through the air. Frost's men dove for cover, the night exploding into chaos.
As bullets whizzed overhead, Cox secured the radar components. Each piece was vital intelligence that could save countless Allied lives.
Frost's mind raced. The beach assault team, meant to secure their escape route, was missing. They'd landed miles of course.
German soldiers emerged from the tree line, their feldgrau uniforms ghostly in the moonlight. Frost bellowed orders, his voice barely audible over the intensifying gunfire.
The paratroopers began their retreat, precious radar parts rattling on a makeshift trolley. Every step towards the beach brought them closer to extraction - and deeper into the enemy's closing trap.
Frost stood on the moonlit beach, his heart pounding. No sign of the naval evacuation force. German fire raked the sand, pinning down his men. He reached for his flare gun - their last hope. The red flare would signal their location to the evacuation boats, but it would also illuminate their position for the enemy.
Frost's hand tightened on the flare gun. He knew the fate of the air war - perhaps the entire conflict - hung on the success of their mission. With a deep breath, he raised the gun skyward. There was no other choice.

R.V.Jones's autobiography of his time in the intelligence services (Most Secret War: British Military Intelligence 1939-1945) is a great read. He discusses his interactions with Lindemann, Tizard, Watson-Watt and Churchill amongst many others. He also gave the 1980 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, which can be viewed on the Royal Institution's website.

Before anything had been found at brunvall, a mission had taken place in buenos aires to retrieve a top secret radar from the Graf Spee's hulk.the radar unit was retrieved and placed infront of Watt, who said"this is all lies! We are the only country who knows about radar, i figured it out an noone else knows, this is a lie! "and it was put on a shelf and forgotten about! He was so respected that they beiev3d noone could have possibl beaten him to it in germany or replicated it. He was a fool, if one can ldiscover it so can someone else and they had even before war kicked off. We were lucky the germans hadnt put more resources into radar because in a lot of ways they were ahead, especially in radar guided weapons for navy and anti aircraft weapons

7:21 This German radar had 2 pieces, 1 German radar pointing towards England in 1 direction and a 2nd German radar pointing towards England from a DIFFERENT area in France. These early German radar DID NOT rotate in a circle like today's radar. These 2 differently-positioned German radar sites would eventually intersect their "straight radar lines" with each other for the junction of a letter "X." over a specific site in England. Where that junction was is where the Germans were to drop their payloads. This was done usually at night against the English. The English figured this out and counteracted these German "radar lines," i.e. Dark's video. 🙋🏻‍♂️

Correct. The most terrifying weapon the Germans used against the Brits was the V2, the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile. It travelled at supersonic speed, over 3500 mph, impacted without audible warning, and proved unstoppable. No effective defense existed. Over 3000 V2s were launched during the last 6 months of the war, causing over 9000 mostly civilian deaths.

The idea was to seize an important piece of technology.
The Dieppe Raid was a pinch raid buried in a major action

Jones's story of the "battle of beams", the V1 and V2 intelligence battle and much more (the raid mentioned in the video gets small mention and doesn't go into the military details of the operation, however, it does mention that a one stage RV Jones was suggested to go on the mission and had he would have been shot by his own side rather than fall into German hands. The officer who sent the mission was surprised to meet Jones later in the war as he had met the survivors of the raid and Jones was not amongst them. He assumed he must have died in the operation when, in fact, he was forbidden to go on it).
