Running back will never be a glorified position any more due to college football schemes and also them not getting paid in the pros. I also think it’s because of a lot of guys who used to play running back back then are MAKING their kids switch positions. I saw a podcast with CJ 2k and Lendale White not that long ago where they both said that they would make their sons play db or wr, not running back. The whole Derrick Henry and CMC thing is also weird to me because Derrick Henry was like the last of a dying breed, while CMC was the start of teams wanting their primary back to do it all, at least in the modern era. In the heisman race, I feel they never took into account CMC had like 3,700 all purpose yards. I feel like Derrick Henry got it not just because he ran for 2k, but because he ran for 2k at Alabama. But then when they went to the NFL, Derrick got drafted in the 2nd round as a national champion heisman, while CMC was drafted in the top 10. In my opinion, both those guys are anomalies because they’ve been consistently getting paid high dollar money at running back in an era where most running backs don’t make jack. And they do it with such different styles too. It’s just weird how football works sometimes because you could argue that Reggie Bush was the archetype as CMC, the do it all back. But Bush never had the individual success like CMC had. Derrick Henry literally had every reason to be a bust in the modern era. He’s a 6’4 230 pound bell cow who can’t really return kicks, or catch the ball that effectively, but yet he churns out 1,500 yard seasons and all pros like he’s playing in the 90’s. At the end of the day, I wish running backs were appreciated more because it’s the position that made college and pro ball the sport that it is now. Great video!

Last one I can think of was Aaron Jones and even he was not a solidified top 5 starter. Having a good back accounts for deficiencies in the line and scheme. A good example of the that being the Titans from 2018-2023 Espcially during the last 2 years they were horrendous, off topic but its funny to me how Titans fans were complaining about drafting O-Line 2 years in a row 😂 But ultimately I think the value of elite RBs is in line with how much their getting paid 13-16 mil for a top 5 elite 3 down back is pennies in today's salary cap. Considering the fact that we saw multiple guards get over 20 mil this offseason. The value just makes sense in the modern age.

The spread option offense is what is responsible for devaluing the RB position in both the pro and college level of football. The emergence of highly mobile, dual threat QB's are taking a large chunk of the carries away from RB's. I'm cool with football becoming almost exclusively specialized around throwing. If you like running, play rugby. If you like throwing, play football. You could say blocking is the defining feature of football (you can't block even in rugby), but I think passing is more interesting than blocking. And for the case of rugby, they integrate passing with running much better. Every single play is an ongoing option play.
I think this video misses out on aspects of the RB position that most people generally have a hard time wrapping their head around. 1. Running backs do not contribute to rushing efficiency the same way that quarterbacks contribute to passing efficiency. QB’s are obviously somewhat dependent on O Line play and receivers, but RB success is MUCH more dependent on opposing defense box count and run blocking. There’s a reason that if a QB gets hurt, the team is usually screwed meanwhile if a RB gets hurt, the backup usually ends up having just as much success. This is largely why nobody drafts RBs in the first round anymore, they’re very easily replaceable (ex: Tyler algier had just as much success as Bijan last season). 2. The other issue is that for most teams, passing is insanely more efficient than rushing (college can vary slightly more bc of the talent gap between O Lines and D Lines). If teams are still trying to establish the run and give it to their RBs 40 times a game, they probably suck. If we’re going to complain about RBs not getting the Heisman, we might as well complain about linemen, line backers, receivers, and DBs not getting the award too bc RBs are usually less important than all of those positions.
RB’s haven’t been devalued they’ve been demonetized. ESPN and FS1 helps owners keep their price tags low by convincing casual fans SF needs Brock more than Christian etc
