It is very fascinating how we, as humans, try to "manufacture" new experiences not normally present in the real world. We create new things that are absent in our everyday lives, like non-euclidean physics, ego-death cyberdelics, and many other wacky things that transition the normal into the paranormal. Sometimes, it's good. Other times, it's really bad. More often than not, experiencing these raises more questions than it creates answers that satiate our curiosity. And I hope that never changes.
Judeo it doesn’t even have to be experiences that don’t exist in the “real world”. A lot of people use VR to fill voids in their lives, wether that be a social life (vrchat most popular vr title), having an exciting adventure (pretty much any first person story based game).
@@Shyverin But that's kind of the point, isn't it? VR "fills" the void by letting the people experience new things that deviate from the mundane and ordinary. It allows an escape from everyday realities that we've all become accustomed to. And by doing so, it sparks this creative and joyous feeling that asks an imperative question: "Is there more to this?" We all want to find some solace in our lives. I admit that I do. But, more importantly, we all want to share that experience with people we care about.
Judeo I agree, but also find it quite sad that sitting with a bunch of people that you randomly met in a nice place to be considered no longer ordinary :(
Tripping at VRChat parties has been some of the best experiences with Pychedelics I've had. About 2 months ago almost 30 of us all tripped to 6 hours of live-DJ'd psytrance, house, and techno, and the club world had been sync'd up so the lights and environment changed to the beat. Dancing together with everyone in full body tracking, with these super colorful and trippy avatars, in such a wild and wonderful environment... it was one of the best trips of my life!
you can simulate visuals in a game but you cant simulate the feeling. that egodeath. the feeling of just being here with everything so euphoric but scary. its beautiful. life is crazy
I thought this was something I was mostly alone in, but it’s refreshing and even a bit exciting to see this phenomenon well established. I play VRChat almost every day, most of the time tripping or getting high and relaxing with my friends. Almost everyone I meet in the virtual realm seems shocked at the idea of so casually using VR on potentially intense substances, but the immersion, connectedness, and openness I feel are irreplaceable. With that said, I don’t believe any psychedelic experience can be simulated in VR beyond the visuals. Until you’ve experience with both mind altering substances and virtual reality enough to handle both simultaneously, it’s hard to really even conceptualize the content such an experience can bring. It definitely is NOT for everyone, too. I’ve only had one bad trip in VR, and it left me in hysterics and hurt my relationship with a friend I had made. I still find it difficult to talk to them even months later. Even so, I wholeheartedly vouch that cyberdelics have the potential to augment the connectedness and transcendence traditionally attributed to psychedelics.
Spoilers: Phia laced the video with LSD and the audience is tripping, the part where she was interviewing the goose is actually just live footage of her talking to some dude.
This was really insightful. I’m definitely gonna look more into cyberdelics. I’m not too knowledgeable on the subject aside from everything I just heard in the video, but the video did make me wanna research it some more. I hope we get more enlightening content like this!
This is probably the best episode of TVRS yet. That fact you wanted to understand how these people felt during their experiences rather than shaming them is Beautiful to me; we need more people that seek knowledge first before they cast judgement.
VR and psychedelics are literally made for each other. A few years ago I took Atlantis mushrooms (my first time ever taking any kind of drug) and had the trip with my headset on. I watched a concert in VR and played some games, and I cannot describe in words how unbelievably amazing that was. Easily the highlight of my life. I have never again felt such overwhelmingly positive emotions at that intensity and for such a prolonged amount of time. I did struggle at a very specific point towards the peak of the trip but I wouldn't want to erase that, it was all life changing, both the good and the bad and it's an experience I won't forget. If you try it I have to tell you to do good research on the dosage, as a small deviation in dose can be the difference between the best or the worst day of your life. Regarding the topic of achieving ego death or even just simple psychedelic experiences purely through VR, I must say I'm rather skeptical on that front, although I hope I'm totally wrong. You must understand that these substances literally change the chemistry of your brain, they enhance your receptors in a way that everything your senses capture (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) is multiplied manyfold or altered in major ways. If you eat food, it will literally be the best food you've ever had, even if it's just leftovers like in my case. If you listen to music, you'll feel and hear things you've never experienced before even if it's the same old song you've played a thousand times. Even if you simply touch something, that can be an experience on its own. When playing piano I felt the keys were melting, and touching my own beard was the most pleasurable thing ever. Creating such level of experience only through VR is going to be ultra challenging to say the least, if even possible at all.
Totally agree about VR not being able to fully replace a drug trip. The drugs affect your memory and your awarness of time, and your ability to make connections from random ideas. Nothing percieved through just eyes and ears can replace that time warp as far as I know.
Having not used mind altering substances previously I cannot speak as to how close my personal "ego death" is to those who have had induced this phenomenon, but upon learning that the atoms that comprise you now will not be the atoms that you are composed of in a matter of years has in some ways caused me to view myself as intimately connected to the universe as a whole while also cementing my own personal self as an integral part of it. Thanks for the work and the interesting topics explored herein.
With ego death you will forget who you are, you will forget what a human is, "you" will not exist anymore, because your ego is your sense of self, and when that is gone, then everything just is, everything is one in a way that goes way beyond words or just a different view. it's literally indescribable.

Your video was really interesting. I started my psychedelic gaming journey back in 2015 and honestly i didnt think i was gonna be able to play games on lsd after the first time. I played zombies in spaceland and discovered theres an ENTIRE TOWN outside the map that i never knew was there and id played the map thousands of times. I look forward to getting a vr device soon and checking out the mysterys vr on lsd has in store for me. Good vibes to you in all future trips you take ☮️ - your local psychonaut
Phia, so happy you did a show on this topic. I have done extensive research on this topic. My top VR booster psychedelic is Ketamine at this moment. I have experienced many ego death experiences. My last psilocybin mushroom experience was so profound and life altering its been 12 years since I have taken any....and I use to use mushrooms every other month or so! HAVE YOU TRIED: Sound Self? I was actually beginning to wonder about this myself ever since I got my headset, glad to see you were already making some headway with the idea! Oh and trippy, by the way :D
tru, but also depends on dose and setting. a person can be not so well but still come out good, if she's able to let go. and even bad trips that are not exactly traumatising can be healing and educational
Very well done! You should cover why people sleep in VR. When I first found out that people sleep in VR, I thought it was the craziest thing. Also, congrats on the full body tracking. It looks good.
@@KatFireFlames I think there are several reason why, but I think one of them might have roots in our evolutionary past. Studies of modern day hunter gatherers indicate that they sleep in groups, presumably for safety. It's weird, but there is a sort of social aspect to sleeping in VR. Knowing that there are people sleeping in the same room adds a sense of security and safety.
@@falljazz I realise i'm responding to a 2 year old comment, but as someone who dealt with diurnal mood variation for a long time (basically consistently feeling depressed in the mornings upon waking and consistently feeling gradually better throughout the day to the point of zero/near zero depression at night), I can imagine that waking up in VR would have potentially been super helpful. One of the ways I would deal with my depression in the morning would be to scroll reddit or something on my phone until something made me laugh. The chemical change brought on by laughing would often be just enough to get me up. Sometimes it would take hours to work though. So waking in VR and having the opportunity to be instantly immersed in a potentially much more interesting and engaging environment than what reality felt like at the time for me, may have been really useful for alleviating that depression.
@@kirbyweller2870 Wait a second, that sounds like exactly what I have, especially in highschool and college. Bad depression in the morning and almost zero energy. And then my energy and mood would increase throughout the day and peak right before bed. How did you find out you had it? And I’ve slept in VR a few times, so I get what you’re saying. Waking up in a warm comfy place with friendly people around is very nice.
@@falljazz It's part of clinical depression, not quite it's own diagnosis, rather a form of depression that is recognised by the psych world. Can't quite remember how I found out, but I study in a health related field so might have been at some point during my degree. No one is quite sure what causes the depression to manifest in this particular way, although an involvement of the circadian rhythm is suspected, something which is often in an abnormal state for people who are depressed. Personally, I received a diagnosis of ADHD in my adult life. ADHD is often associated with abnormal circadian rhythm. Meds have helped tremendously, and I often sleep much better now. They also enabled me to actually complete tasks in day to day life. Before the meds my life was a series of failed attempts to study/work/socialize. With this improvement, my depression was alleviated. I no longer feel depressed when I wake up.
This is such an interesting video, it's like doing street interviews except they're in vr not to mention people can be more open than they would be in real life.
Beat saber on psychedelics, mushrooms in particular, can be very interesting, the music and the movement synced up with it has been very unique compared to tripping in any other environment, I don’t know that I’d describe it as an ego death, but in my experience the sense of self started to blend with the music, as if the music is your self, movements are very fluid, and you don’t even really think of what your body is doing, it just happens, can be very intense physically and mentally but it can lead to learning a lot about yourself and your personality. Not to be taken lightly but beat saber is likely a bit more “friendly” than thumper in my experience
I recommend the game called EVERYTHING to play while on psychedelics. It’s not vr, but will take you on quite the journey as you gain new perspectives as you become/play as literally everything in the universe. Alan Watts guides you through the entire thing, you will laugh, you might cry, and you will come to a realization of reality like you maybe never have before. Pants, animals, fungi, bacteria, atoms, planets, galaxies, subatomic geometry... all playable. Everything is everything.
Actually saw altVR first but very interesting discussion. I've tripped many times and ready to pair it with VR. I'm getting a Oculus quest soon and boutta go check out this cyberdelic subreddit🤘 cheers
of the few times ive enjoyed substances, i never thought "i would like to play any videogame / vr right now", (despite loving videogames for a long time. despite enjoying the substance experience on its own) although, if i had yet to have ever taken any substance, i certainly could have thought "i would like to try both at the same time, maybe that would be mind expanding" the last thing i wanted to do is watch tv, i dont want to be guided by a narrative. watching a visualizer on winamp was epic because its more zen and allows you to enjoy without external rigid story. similarly, enjoying the trip involves acceptance that you're buckled in for the ride, you can try to fight it but you wont win, so sit back and relax and enjoy it for what it is. ego death is a very cleansing experience, its great for dealing with trauma or extreme emotions. substances can be great in the right setting, but you certainly want an experienced trip-sitter to watch over you, someone who truly cares for your well being. if you want a game that would benefit a trip, it should be something without a fenced in goal where you can just wave your arms or click buttons to make neat things happen, something like Tilt Brush or a simple kalideoscope program where you can adjust the dials. if you think that teledildonics is akin to actual human sex, then sure, in a strictly mechanical sense you can replicate the motions but its not going to be a personalized true bonding experience like you get from real skin to skin and heart to heart contact... any more than your fav movie can make you feel what "being in love" is like. you cant replicate a substance experience with software any more than you can simulate sex with software. vr is trippy enough on its own that i dont feel the need to actually trip "to improve the experience", and in the same way, the power of your mind being altered by substances is also enough of its own thing that combining the two would maybe detract from the overall experience; you dont need to eat breakfast lunch and dinner at the same time to feel like you "had a more complete meal experience" cool vid phia, thank you for making it.
A common question I get asked by family and such is ‘do you think you’ll ever start confusing reality with virtual reality and losing track of which is which?’ Of course I answer no everytime as it sounds surreal but I’d be interested to see a virtual reality show episode exploring this idea. :)
it’s all your state of mind, it’s all your mindset at the time as long as you go into the trip in a good way you’ll be good, and if you’re feeling really bad just take a deep breath and try not to think about not over thinking because that will get you in a thought loop, go into the trip to have fun/ to get a better outlook to life. enjoy
As a former psychonaut, I approve this message. As a VR noob, all I can say is, I would usually want to be far away from ANY technology on the natural trips, and I am a little more OK with it when I was on chems.
i had a panic attack during my first time trying VR because it gave me trip flashbacks and also had this lucid dreaming/unreality quality which really aggravated my dissociation. I love the idea of tripping on VR but there's absolutely no way I could handle it... I can barely handle VR sober
Did it for the first time last night. Beat saber was incredible, it felt like I was a VR athlete competing with other VR athletes in the arena, and if I lose something bad night happen to me so I was playing like my life depended on it
The creator of LSD did an ungodly amount of research on his creation. Can't say I am a fan of his extraction from bread mold. Had a bad time to keep me off it for life. Also, DXM is legal in the US. I will be experimenting with this for the first time in a while... while in VR. Thank you for compiling a list of games I will be trying when I go on this journey once more.
"I was surprised by the amount of people who responded" really? lol Really though great episode like always. Got into VRchat cuz of you lol. got my friend into it too lol.
I did VR while on magic mushrooms, played vader immortal and superhot vr, it was so cool. but once i found out i could walk through stuff. (i was playing outide in the grass) i litterly felt like i had no body. and my mind was the only thing there. so i could think insanly clearly and when a friend of mine who was inside came to hug me i felt my body again. insane experience
Love this episode , I'm currently saving for meta quest 3 and have tripped many times , I dont feel I need to try psychs in vr I am content with the separate experiences. I am curios I have had extreme tunnel vision while watching anime on ketamine and lsd at same time it was very immersive like vr without a headset. So I'm excited to try vr for first time especially since it came so far in 2024. I've smoked DMT and I'm glad I tried it but it was a little to intense and can cause schizophrenia in some cases so wasn't for me. I do like mushrooms a lot but I used to prefer LSD because you can have more control mushrooms can kind of poison or take control of your mind while acid you feel more in control. I had ego death naturally around some of first trips and didn't realize it till after ,nothing major it makes you more humble and connected to nature and people and empathy.
I suggested this in a past video but I still think it's a good idea: Phia should record The Virtual Reality Show in 360º so that people using Google Cardboard and the Oculus Go can get a bigger level of immersion; I'm aware it's not really VR but it's the closest to VR that the mainstream has and it would be amazing if a show where they talk about all things Virtual Reality inside Virtual Reality was also broadcast in (almost) Virtual Reality!
@@TheVirtualRealityShow yeah, I guess very few people tried doing what you are doing so specialized tools might not be available. Makes sense, yeah. Wonder if the developer of the software you use would be so kind as to give it a try but I'm unsure about how that would work...
@@averygoodfantasticname4206 @Kestrel It is possible (although I'm unsure on how to recreate that) to record 360 in vr games, take this one for example: ruclips.net/video/J5DI_uYLp9A/видео.html However, as Phia has already said, the software she uses does not support that. All I proposed was a hypothesis which was later refuted. I guess maybe in the future it's going to be possible, who knows?
It may be off-subject but what about...exaustion? It's well known that if you're tired enough, you may feel like someone drunk for exemple. Wouldn't being on a thin thread of consiousness start to blurry the frontier between reality and virtual worlds in way that makes them more immersives? Isn't that why some people sleep in VR in the first place? To wander in these impossible landscapes before even falling asleep, to influence their dreams? An episode about sleeping/being sleepy and how it affect the VR experience may be as interesting as this one.
Have you looked into what is going on with NeosVR and the focus on creation in VR. Many universities use it as well for education and experiencing things that cant be done normally much like this.
i don't do drugs or any psychedelics of sorts but this kinda gives me a different perspective on whats its like to do them in vr and the negatives or positives of doing it.
I have recently tried 3gram 🍄🍫While playing Skyrim VR on my PSVR...omfg it was amazing and even more realistic and immersive than before. I have done this 3x so far and I love it.
Lol did 2.5 of shrooms soak in lemon juice yesterday and boi that kick in so fast, for the first hour i was like questioning everything and freaking out a lil bit, (pretty normal for beginners) and pretty much an hour later everything was funny for no reason, so pretty much last few hours i was laughing n giggling like a madman. Tbh im probably gunna try it again soon.
Thanks for the conversation Phia, this was very interesting, great episode! Cool to have you shed light on this topic!!!

you have to be in a good mental state to do any kind of psychedelics. otherwise your doing it your own risk
tru, but also depends on dose and setting. a person can be not so well but still come out good, if she's able to let go. and even bad trips that are not exactly traumatising can be healing and educational
it is always at your own risk.
This was very moving. I appreciate you making this video. Its very interesting.
Very well done! You should cover why people sleep in VR. When I first found out that people sleep in VR, I thought it was the craziest thing. Also, congrats on the full body tracking. It looks good.
Yes I would definitely be interested in a video on this. I’ve seen plenty of people do and I’m curious as to why.
This is genuinely the most interesting video on this channel
Thank you 💙💙☮️
This is such an interesting video, it's like doing street interviews except they're in vr not to mention people can be more open than they would be in real life.
As a Vr user who's taken psychedelics (LSD, Shrooms, DMT) I don't think I've ever sat so attentively through a video like this in a long time.
Ooo the tracking is so smooth now!! ^-^
Okay but the ending was beautiful
holy shit this content is fascinating and quickly getting into my favorites list of channels like vsauce 1/2/3 , physics girl and more :D
My two favorite topics in one video? love it xd
Great video! I loved the whole explanation Joakim did. Keep it up! 👍
Thanks!:)
Actually saw altVR first but very interesting discussion. I've tripped many times and ready to pair it with VR. I'm getting a Oculus quest soon and boutta go check out this cyberdelic subreddit🤘 cheers
Very informative! I would like to try this a lot 🤯
Can't wait for the feet guys to see this. This'll blow their minds 😂
I don't know if they could handle it tbh :O
of the few times ive enjoyed substances, i never thought "i would like to play any videogame / vr right now", (despite loving videogames for a long time. despite enjoying the substance experience on its own)
although, if i had yet to have ever taken any substance, i certainly could have thought "i would like to try both at the same time, maybe that would be mind expanding"
the last thing i wanted to do is watch tv, i dont want to be guided by a narrative.
watching a visualizer on winamp was epic because its more zen and allows you to enjoy without external rigid story.
similarly, enjoying the trip involves acceptance that you're buckled in for the ride, you can try to fight it but you wont win, so sit back and relax and enjoy it for what it is.
ego death is a very cleansing experience, its great for dealing with trauma or extreme emotions.
substances can be great in the right setting, but you certainly want an experienced trip-sitter to watch over you, someone who truly cares for your well being.
if you want a game that would benefit a trip, it should be something without a fenced in goal where you can just wave your arms or click buttons to make neat things happen, something like Tilt Brush or a simple kalideoscope program where you can adjust the dials.
if you think that teledildonics is akin to actual human sex, then sure, in a strictly mechanical sense you can replicate the motions but its not going to be a personalized true bonding experience like you get from real skin to skin and heart to heart contact... any more than your fav movie can make you feel what "being in love" is like.
you cant replicate a substance experience with software any more than you can simulate sex with software.
vr is trippy enough on its own that i dont feel the need to actually trip "to improve the experience", and in the same way, the power of your mind being altered by substances is also enough of its own thing that combining the two would maybe detract from the overall experience; you dont need to eat breakfast lunch and dinner at the same time to feel like you "had a more complete meal experience"
cool vid phia, thank you for making it.
ok
This is so fascinating. Great video!
As the 64th like I’m proud to say the video now has one stack of likes
As the 174th like im proud to say this video has 2 stacks idk I havent been in school for so long I forgot how to math
as the 192th like im proud to say the video now has a full inventory of likes
wait a seconds nvm thats not how math works its 2 full inventorys
As the 1638th like im proud to say i can’t do the math on that one
your show is super important for VR community. Please create more useful content like this
A common question I get asked by family and such is ‘do you think you’ll ever start confusing reality with virtual reality and losing track of which is which?’ Of course I answer no everytime as it sounds surreal but I’d be interested to see a virtual reality show episode exploring this idea. :)
it’s all your state of mind, it’s all your mindset at the time as long as you go into the trip in a good way you’ll be good, and if you’re feeling really bad just take a deep breath and try not to think about not over thinking because that will get you in a thought loop, go into the trip to have fun/ to get a better outlook to life.
A friend of mine *cough* played Superhot for about 4hrs while peaking on LSD and it was an incredibly surreal experience. They highly recommend it 👍🏻
"I was surprised by the amount of people who responded" really? lol
Really though great episode like always.
We are always tripping through our VR. We are emerged.
Dude what a great video
This is pure rich content!
I would like to do a 3D video, but I currently do not have access to those resources in the programs I use to film TVRS!
@@TheVirtualRealityShow yeah, I guess very few people tried doing what you are doing so specialized tools might not be available. Makes sense, yeah. Wonder if the developer of the software you use would be so kind as to give it a try but I'm unsure about how that would work...
How are you going to put a 360 camera in vr
@@averygoodfantasticname4206 @Kestrel It is possible (although I'm unsure on how to recreate that) to record 360 in vr games, take this one for example: ruclips.net/video/J5DI_uYLp9A/видео.html
However, as Phia has already said, the software she uses does not support that. All I proposed was a hypothesis which was later refuted. I guess maybe in the future it's going to be possible, who knows?
I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT ABOUT THIS!
The Wave is the best possible experience for tripping in VR. Live DJs and FX catered towards psychedelic experiences.
bingo! You've hit the spot with this one
your outro also is kinda psychedelic now that I'm actually paying attention to it :o
Awesome topic phia!
refreshed the page because i thought i was tripping when i seen the goose part XD
An episode about sleeping/being sleepy and how it affect the VR experience may be as interesting as this one.
thank you for this! hug from a fellow psychonaut :)
I love this show, VR is awesome
I was thinking that your world on vrc in the interview with the cyberdelic expert was pretty dang trippy (he said while high as a kite)
This is my jam, right here.
Fiji the vr garden game would be another good one to try.
Thanks for coming to the Ted talk. Lol
I'd love to try Tilt Brush when tripping
Have you looked into what is going on with NeosVR and the focus on creation in VR. Many universities use it as well for education and experiencing things that cant be done normally much like this.
ive been waiting for this
Good job on the thumbnail
love this content!!!
I love vr cause its the only place where an anime girl interviewing a duck about psychedelics in an alien field is normal.
dont know where to start but we should talk about this one day . a trip would be more of a MR program
PHantastIc vIdeo
Whenever i trip i use my psvr. It is amazing
TheJoeRoganExperience:
Phia: So Joe, have you tried vr yet?
Joe: Not yet.
Phia: It's like DMT, without the DMT.
Joe: Interesting... Go on...
I'm curious about the vr philosophy podcast that joaquin mentioned does anyone know where I can watch it?
Hey! Yeah, you can find it at my channel and on most podcast providers!
i don't do drugs or any psychedelics of sorts but this kinda gives me a different perspective on whats its like to do them in vr and the negatives or positives of doing it.
I have that quest guided tai chi. It works just about as well as irl guided tai chi
I have recently tried 3gram 🍄🍫While playing Skyrim VR on my PSVR...omfg it was amazing and even more realistic and immersive than before. I have done this 3x so far and I love it.
Thank you for this~
Lol did 2.5 of shrooms soak in lemon juice yesterday and boi that kick in so fast, for the first hour i was like questioning everything and freaking out a lil bit, (pretty normal for beginners) and pretty much an hour later everything was funny for no reason, so pretty much last few hours i was laughing n giggling like a madman. Tbh im probably gunna try it again soon.
