Anyway if you have a match you'll probably have the box with it and the coating usually lasts for all the matches, also trying to light a match with your finger at the end isn't a good survival skill.

As a result, any reaction with products of greater surface area will always be faster :)
these are just standard box strike matches. depending on the brand you could also get sure-strikes which have both the chemicals needed to ignite, or single chemical matches. I believe the ones he's using are sure strikes, in which case you could strike them on: your jeans, your boots, any smooth surface, anysemi-abrasive surface... Heck, you could light one with a bullet, but that would be a waste of ammo. On a side note, just because the windows are blown out, doesn't mean you couldn't find a piece large enough to act as a striking surface.

It would be cool if you could explain some of the experiments a bit , for example ,Why does the Sugar and the Sulfuric Acid reaction produces a solid mass?
The sulfuric acid dehydrates and oxidises the sugar to carbon. The reason why it's so porous and light is that the water immediately evaporates, creating little bubbles in the carbon.
Maybe a tornado went through your house and everything got wet. It's much easier to dry a shard of glass than a box of matches. So you dry the shard of glass and strike the match to make a fire.
Last one is just the Sulfuric Acid dehydrating the sugar. Sugar (Sucrose) has a chemical formula C6H22O11. Since the Hydrogen and Oxygen are in the ratio 2:1 just like in water H20, the H22O11 part is removed by the acid (dehydrated) and all you're left with is plain old Carbon which is black..

The sulfuric acid dehydrates and oxidises the sugar to carbon. The reason why it's so porous and light is that the water immediately evaporates, creating little bubbles in the carbon.

Maybe a tornado went through your house and everything got wet. It's much easier to dry a shard of glass than a box of matches. So you dry the shard of glass and strike the match to make a fire.
Last one is just the Sulfuric Acid dehydrating the sugar. Sugar (Sucrose) has a chemical formula C6H22O11. Since the Hydrogen and Oxygen are in the ratio 2:1 just like in water H20, the H22O11 part is removed by the acid (dehydrated) and all you're left with is plain old Carbon which is black..
