Hey Claus - Happy Holidays to all of you and yours. As is my habit for this time of year, I just re-watched "A Christmas Carol" - the 1984 version with George C. Scott - and was therefore inspired to immediately check out your video for today (lol). And, of course, you didn't disappoint. So, to get back in the swing of things, the Martian Solar Day is 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35 seconds, so only about 40 minutes longer than Earth. Since it doesn't vary, shorter and longer, humans could easily adapt to that small difference. While in the service, I was part of a rotating shift schedule - 4 groups rotating every six hours. On duty for 6, off for six, sleep for 6-ish, ready reserve for 6, and then back on duty for 6, which rotated every 4 days. THAT was a difficult adaption. However, I do feel we can and should make an effort to reach Mars despite the enormous difficulties you cataloged. However, I see it as a scientific endeavor rather than a colonization program, at least until our propulsion technologies advance significantly beyond simple chemical rocket engines. Also, Mars would act as a stepping stone to exploration out into the Asteroid Belt, where it is believed vast amounts of needed raw materials will be found for return to either Mars or Earth orbit for processing. But, I also agree that Earth is primarily a water world - Google says 71% - so I think it's almost criminal that we have made so little effort to create large population centers on or under the oceans. In that regard, here's an old novel that deals in that area - "The Deep Range" (1957) by Arthur C. Clark. He was an engineer by trade before becoming a Sci-Fi author, so he deals authentically with the subject (p.s. - just as Andy Weir did with "The Martian"). Oh, BTW, I hope your getaway cabin and surrounding trees haven't suffered any further from snow/ice storms; it looks like a beautiful area to spend some real nature time!
