I think lactose intolerance is poorly understood by many people. It does *not* mean that drinking any amount of milk is going to make you seriously ill, it just means that consuming lactose will give some degree of mild to severe upset stomach and gasiness. Many people who get a little gassy after eating some ice cream for dessert probably wouldn't even realize it's because of their lactose intolerance, since people can become gassy for a wide variety of reasons. Want to test if you're lactose intolerant? Pour yourself a bigass glass of milk and drink all of it, if you get pretty or very gassy sometime afterwards then you are lactose intolerant. Not everyone with lactose intolerance reacts the same way since it depends on the ecosystem of your digestive system, and how much dairy you consume in general, not just the gene itself. And people who say that they've never met anyone with lactose intolerance, how would you know? Do they tell you every time they feel gassy or bloated, and what they ate prior to that? Do people sit around drinking glasses of milk with their friends and watching their reactions?
That's pretty much right. I started getting horrible bloating and diarrhea in my early 20s (the same time I moved into a neighborhood with a great milkshake spot), and I didn't connect the dots until I stopped having milkshakes and my digestive troubles magically disappeared. It's pretty much dose-dependent -- any amount of cheese is fine; a few bites of ice cream is fine; a small scoop of ice cream is a little risky; a tall glass of milk is a one-way ticket to the toilet. If any dairy product gives you severe problems, it's probably an allergy to whey or casein.
It's because of the way the gene spread. It spread to mostly white and Scandinavian people, so if you go to Africa or Asia you will find almost no one drinking milk.
I love milk. Professor Xavier, I'll be expecting a knock on my door soon . Though I actually can't digest onion.. Wrecks my stomach for hours. I also hear that onions are actually poisonous to most animals. Wonder why that is. Maybe its my kryptonite.
I'm not allergic to anything and I can eat onions plus super spicy food. :). I feel like a super mutant now mwah hahaha. Ill be called the dustbin man! Oh wait. shit.
this reminds me of where I said something about milk and the reason why it isn't included in a lot of asian dishes is because a lot of asians in asia can't digest milk. everybody ended up calling me a nazi

I'm a double mutant too... I don't react to mosquito bites. Everyone who hears this screams something like "STRAP HIM DOWN, HE IS THE CURE!" I've had tests but there's no way to actually give it to other people except my children.
being able to eat ice cream is a pretty awesome mutant power. I mean, if I had to choose between laser eyes or ice cream, you bet your tuchus I'd go for that sweet mint chocolate brownie goodness.
Me too, from basically since I remember I only drink milk and water, I cant stand juice or anything else to hydrate myself. At home drink only milk (water everywhere else) when I dont leave the house I can easily drink about 6 litres a day. Someday Im gonna have too look up the consequences to my health but I figure my body is just adapted to cow milk by now.
MegaCevapcic well, for one, I have heard (entirely possible that this is nowhere near true) that people with an over abundance of calcium in their systems are at a higher risk of getting kidney stones...but FUCK THAT! I want my milk!
MegaCevapcic Just to let you know, milk is high in cholesterol I had a friend growing up who's father had a heart attack and had to have a triple bypass and it was linked to his massive amount of milk he drank. [around four to five liters a day.]
"Milk is secret to humans. Mack Beth say milk make humans strong. Stronger than super mutants! Strong find milk. Drink milk. Make super mutants stronger than humans."
You shouldnt call the 70% lactose-intolerants, since theyre the majority of the population. Instead, you should call the o so mighty 30% lactose-tolerants.
Hank, the fertile crescent seems very barren in our time. Was it a lot more fertile in the past? Did humans cut down all the trees, or do trees not grow well there now, because the fertile crescent no longer gets enough moisture?
In school they talked about irrigated land becoming increasingly salty. I can only wonder about desertification, blights, crop failures. What caused the dust bowl in America?
This would be a good topic for another video. You get more of a sense of history when you look at something like the fertile crescent, going back in time thousands of years. I suspect the geography and weather was very different.
spelunkerd To my understanding it is still quite fertile in the area around the rivers which is where the ancient civilizations were set up, being along the Nile and the Tigris&Euphrates. It would make sense that after thousands of years of farming the land eventually became less lucrative but the three rivers are still used to this day for farming and what not.
The thing about the fertile crescent, is that it is surrounded by two rivers. The annual flooding of the rivers caused soil to wash up onto the land. This soil was very nutrient rich and very useful for farming. When the flooding stops due to human intervention, so does the yearly deposit of fresh, nutrient rich soil. So in the end, the lack of fertility isn't so much environmental destruction as it is sacrificing one resource, for the increased safety of an area.
there not weird and disgusting and probably just don't think about it at all, the way we come about getting milk is gross and milk is still pretty nasty. it seems good but once you stop drinking it and then drink it again it's super nasty.
40% lactose intolerance in the Mediterranean? But milk and cheese are commonplace in Spain, Italy, etc. It can't be a simple matter of a genetic on-off. It think this video would have benefited from briefly giving some info on the differences between just being not entirely able to digest as much dairy as you like, and being seriously lactose intolerant. I myself seem to get a little phlegmy after consuming dairy, but I lack any of those serious cramping and diarrhoea symptoms about which one hears.
Cheese and yogurt are more easily digestible because they've been fermented, meaning they come along with the extra microbes to help you digest it. But it's true there are levels of lactose intolerance definitely. Maybe it depends if one or both of your parents were as well?
My mom became lactose intolerant after being pregnant, and my dad grew up with a milk allergy he immunized himself to by continuing to drink it anyway. I'm amazed I don't have issues with milk yet but I fear my day may come.
He was a bit unfair with the statistics, most of those people are fine with dairy as long as they don't go overboard, and their side effects are very mild. They're not exactly what you think of when you think of "lactose-intolerant".
lightingbolt85 He's not unfair, it's just that most of the developed world can drink milk, but the rest not so much, so people in developed countries feels like most people can drink it.
It is your mission to open up a school for people like ourselves, until humanity accepts us for what we are :P Either that or you organise a terrorist cell and call yourself Lactoso.
***** I drink, on average, 1.5 - 2 litres of milk per day. So does my father, I guess its because we're of Scottish ancestry that we have such high lactase persistence. Its pretty awesome, not gonna lie.
I actually hate the taste of plain milk, something really gross about it. Chocolate milk, yogurt, and icecream are all fine though. Ordinary milk makes me wanna gag a little. Weird
That doesn't seem to be a lactose intolerance or similiar, just plain 'taste'. I would gag when eating fish, that taste... But i could as a kid! Just a matter of (un-) acquired taste.
The longer cheese matures, the more it loses its lactase. don't know about the Ice cream, but if i were you i wouldn't overdo it. milk is generally not good for you.
I am one of these mutants who can drink milk with impunity as an adult. I also grow a thick beard quickly... I figure my ancestry is from cold weather people with lots of cows. This is a warm and delicious fact.
Never mentioned the fact homogenization and pasteurization kill majority (if not all) of the Lactase in milk. Why would such an important detail be left out and why are so many people against raw milk? I've been drinking it for years (legal in Cali) and have never once become ill or sick from consuming Organic Pastures raw milk.
I've done quite a bit of research on milk. Mainly because I was finding myself extremely bloated and honestly sick to my stomach quite frequently. Turned out eliminating milk from my diet cured me completely (processed milk). I came across a farmer who told me the friendly bacteria in milk is destroyed during the pasteurization and or homogenization process. So he recommended me to try raw milk. Low and behold, I could enjoy the taste of milk again without the side effects. So, if lactase isn't destroyed in the process, which breaks down lactose, why am I able to consume it without the side effects? Riddle me that, Crawford.
Also, just to clarify (because you're uneducated in this subject). You are correct that lactose is a sugar. However, lactase is an enzyme. Enzymes are heat sensitive. A good example would be egg whites. Once you start to cook them, you can literally see the denaturing process. Anyways, my question still stands. Why was such an important piece of information overlooked?
WoundmanTV You are correct, lactase is an enzime, but pasteurization nor homogeneization denaturalizes it, because, the enzime is produced by your own body. That's exactly what lactase intolerance is about (your body not producing lactase). Now, to your point, I would guess that the bacteria living near a cow's udders should produce some kind of lactose-breaking enzime (makes evolutionary sense), so they can feed on it. Maybe by enrichening your digestive system with those bacteria you become able to process lactase?
pasteurizing milk is a "better safe than sorry" approach. while enzymes are degraded during the process, its assumed that lactase produced in the human digestive system (not in lactose intolerant individuals) will digest the milk. I'm assuming that you have a perfectly healthy immune system and that is a factor as to why you never got sick when drinking raw milk. However it's pretty risky for immunocompromised individuals (old people, babies, sick people, pregnant women) to ingest raw milk since the bacteria present may be opportunistic pathogens. Therefore, it can be concluded that the diminished amount illnesses contracted from pasteurised milk is deemed more beneficial than the loss of a couple of enzymes
bballercheetahfan3 Well... I'm guessing you're in North America or Europe? As hank said, it varies across the globe.90% of Asians and Africans are Lactose intolerant, apparently, while approx. 90% of Northern Europeans can digest lactose.
bballercheetahfan3 as stoufsto said, Asians and Africans are mostly lactose intolerant, and you know, India and China already count for more than half of the world population, it'd not weird to think how it comes together.
StoufSto wait whaaat? It can't be! It can't! I haven't seen ONE asian around me is lactose intolerant (among hundreds of asians I know). I lived in China; we just drink milk and eat diary products every day. In fact the first time I heard about lactose intolerance is from my US roommate. Before watching this video I thought lactose intolerance is a disease widely spread in European and American countries!!!! How does the statistics come?
***** Wow that's a long comment.. Yogurt is actually a fixed dish in our high school's meal plan, everyone drinks it everyday. In elementary school we are forced to drink 250ml pasteurized milk everyday at 10AM (in order to grow your body or something) and whoever doesn't will be punished. No one is having ANY problem with milk...If there is such problem, then probably our local government won't have the policy to torture those pupils with so much milk. Maybe it's because we live in coastal area? But if the lactose intolerance is so prevailing here in China then those policy-makers are just serial killers....Maybe the data are from several years ago and we're all mutant by now :) or maybe by Asian they mean other countries like...India? Korea? Japan?
'70% of people are lactose intolerant' I find this very hard to believe. Milk and cheese products are a staple of essentially every diet on the planet (bread has milk in it, most of the time). I'm definitely going to look through your sources, SciShow.
Looked through the article where that statistic came from. Turns out the distribution is closer to about 50%, if you include the spots of convergent mutation in West Africa, the Middle East, and Pakistan. Still pretty staggering though, but the data doesn't lie.
Cheese and such can be made with lactose free substitutes, and they are made that way all around the non-western world (fake cheese for the less tasty "cheeses"). When you age or ferment a cheese, the lactose amount is reduced to almost nothing - safe to eat for lactose intolerant people. Cheddar cheese for example, got 0.05% to 0.08% lactose, which is safe to eat for just about everyone. You may notice it if you're traveling through the world. Most of the lactose is removed during the production of butter, because lactose is a watery substance, which gets drained away when you make butter. Most people (even lactose intolerant) manages the small amounts that are left in the butter.
I have an asian background, and although I consume milk everyday here in Australia, in communist China, no one drinks milk except hipsters, so it is definitely not staple there. Also I've been thinking, did SciShow 'edit' the data, to compensate for the slums of India, China and other developing countries?
I wish they would hurry up and do research into to why some people seem to spontaneously lose lactose tolerance. I used to be lactose tolerant and now I'm not.
i find it weird too, when i was little i was lactose intolerant but the doctor told me that kids aren't lactose intolerant forever only adults aldo he never explained why
F'er MaGee just like water, milk isn't always the same. Im in dairy, and I know the cell count is different every time we milk the cows. Sometimes milk from the same cow is higher or lower in fat or higher or lower in protein etc..... That could be in principal why you are ok drinking milk in the morning sometimes and sometimes not. The exact balance in milk is never the same.
Cyanakrli ...Why would you do this? By what logic... If they were allergic and thier mom bought an alternative to milk would you all switch that out too? Seems a bit mean hope that they do not get sick.
As you get older , your tolerance will go down . I love milk , and I can have it if it is some cheese , yogourt , or a little in a coffee , but I cant anymore have a big glass of it without digestive problems .
Nice one Hank, I just need to forward this on to all my friends and family as soon as they even begin to say 'So why can't you eat milk again?' Maybe have this video as my homepage. Or bring along a projector, board and laser pointer to all events and occasions. It gets tiring having to explain your aversion to a cup of coffee or tea, or ice cream, or deli products...
I think those of you who are skeptical need to understand that just because you know people who eat ice cream and drink milk, doesn't mean they're not lactose intolerant. Most people just eat whatever they want and put up with the gassiness and farting when they go to bed later that night.
Blonde hair and blue eyes two other childhood traits that made it into adulthood for people in northern European continent. I've got the trifecta of mutant traits blond hair, blue eyes and I can drink milk, eat cheese and ice cream. But male pattern baldness kind of nullifies anything good of those traits. FYI if you want to cause a major fight among biologists, archaeologists, philosophers, etc. ask what a person in the northern or northwestern area of the European continent is called (hint: it's not Caucasian).
1) i love sci show and i was sad to see that it didn't do well in the census! (i particularly love sci show talk show) 2) i drink so much milk. im often seen sticking my entire head (and sometimes shoulders) into the milk fridge at the grocery store to find the freshest gallon.
Actually, you still might be a mutant! Allergic reactions are a separate process from lactose intolerance, so it may be that you produce lactase (meaning you can digest milk), but for a different reason you are allergic to it. This is in fact probable (assuming you're of European descent) as normal lactose intolerance produces negative gastro-intestinal outcomes (like diarrhoea) but will not produce things like hives.
Are you sure you're using the correct term? Being intolerant is one thing: It just means you can't produce the enzyme or enough of the enzyme to digest lactose. Being allergic means some protein in the milk triggers an immune reaction in your system. They may seem similar, but are quite different.
Being able to drink milk wasn't "unnecessary" - it was a major survival benefit as in addition to vitamin D, milk also has calcium, an incredibly important vitamin, plus is it is incredibly nutritious for you. Being able to drink milk past age four was an evolutionary advantage which provided milk drinkers with superior nutrition and health over those who couldn't drink is. The reason why you see milk drinking so predominant in the areas it is is due to those areas have large cattle populations which allowed those with the lactose tolerant genes to thrive and pass on the gene better than those who lacked it. Asia, Africa and the Americas had little or no cattle and thus their people lacked this vital source of protein and the opportunity to exploit it.
This is averaged out due to the large population of African and Asians who mostly cannot (90% can't) tolerate lactose. If you are from the US you and the people you know probably have British/European heritage and therefore are fine with lactose.
Here's the source the writer/s of this sci-show episode got it from: www.nature.com/news/archaeology-the-milk-revolution-1.13471 - Scroll down and you'll see a more detailed map of the 'lactose hotspots' as they call them.
tilywinn well according to the map it's around 30-40% (people with tolerance) which seems weird to me, because the first time I ever heard about lactose intolerance was on the internet. I don't think anyone my family even knows that such a thing exists!
This video really changes my view of life for so many individuals in the world....for I couldn't lie about it if I tried.... I have no idea absolutely whatsoever how in the world I could live my life without milk being an everyday part of it and I can only imagine what life is like for people who don't get to experience it's wonderful taste on a day to day basis...but I do drink almost a gallon a day..I don't drink water, soda, tea, lemonade, or koolaide with much of anything...I simply drink milk all day and with no matter what I'm eating... I LITERALLY do not or would not know how to live life without milk!! And I'm truly sorry for anyone not able to share my passion for it because of a mutation or as this video puts it a " non mutation ". I'm truly sorry for everyone not able to experience milk.... that has to suck
It's not illegal, it's just highly regulated. Well depends on where you live obviously. In Idaho you can get raw milk from the local dairy farms, they just don't ship it to other stores.
Id dehydrate to death within a week probably. I remember how sad I felt as a kid when I met a lactose intolerant person, I thought his life was a prison of misery and pain, then again I was young and I do LOVE milk.
I'm from Bahrain, a country in the Persian gulf, and i have never met a lactose intolerant person here (or abroad, and i travel a lot). Perhaps we mutants are a bit more numerous than mentioned? Proud mutant and dairy product connoisseur!
We are on the year 2014 A.D. That means 2014 years have passed since Jesus Christ's birth. In the years before Christ was born (referred as B.C.) there where also lots of human activity all over the world (As proven by different ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, Mayan, Incas, Chinese dynasties, Indians, and Jews). And we are only talking about human's time on earth, which is rather short compared to the rest of the world existence (Like when dinosaurs were ruling the world or even as far as when there wasn't even life on the world). You can go check crashcourse's world history videos (hosted by John Green) for more info, or the internet, or the library or wherever you fancy the most searching for stuff ;)
Why is it considered gross to drink what we were made to drink (human milk) and normal to drink another species milk? I'm sure we can come up with an ethical way to produce human milk for sale right? Until then we have almond milk
It would be too difficult to get the same amount. Cows have more milk. Goats have less which is why it's more expensive, humans produce even less than that(usually).
MasterAsra it should at least be available in a niche kind of way. after all, most people would find it disgusting to drink human milk so you wouldn't have to make that much relative to cow milk.
rayamat01 You can definitely buy human milk online. It is definitely a niche market, but it exists. Apparently it doesn't taste too good due to its bitterness anyways, so you aren't missing out.
One, human milk is normally only fed to babies, so we associate heavily which something a mother does with a new born. Two, humans don't gerenally make milk without actually having a baby to feed, sure, most other mammals don't either, but we are normally incline to genetic engineer and give hormones to animals than actual humans. Three, wouldn't drinking human-milk be pseudo-cannibalism?
Very interesting video! I can't eat or drink anything dairy. Not only am I lactose intolerant, but I'm also allergic to casein. It fascinates me that people who live in the north could consume dairy more than people who lived more south. My ancestry and all that is very northern and Scandinavian, but I'm over here consuming soy, coconut, and almond products. I really wonder why I have these intolerances.
It wouldn't, because it, like almond milk or soy milk, is not really milk. Like Hank said, true milk is produced by mammals. Plant byproducts can be milky, but they're not really milk.
DanThePropMan Just because it isn't actually milk doesn't mean you shouldn't drink it. If you mean that it shouldn't be used to make ice cream, then I agree.
Vadix Vadexi I didn't say you shouldn't drink it, I just said that 1) it's not surprising that it doesn't contain lactose, given that 2) it's not technically milk.
I mostly drink milk I go through about a gallon every day or two kinda sucks since it is super expensive for no reason :( Well expensive for some reasons but none which really warrant the price to me.
Really? Where do you live? I drink a lot of milk too, perhaps not a gallon a day (that's a freakin' lot to drink man). Here in Glasgow in the UK, I can buy a 4-pint carton of milk for £1.
Jason Fee USA and yeah pretty much all that I normally drink. Don't really drink soda or anything at home. It's usually like 4+ dollars per gallon or something like that so more expensive than choosing soda or some other alternative. The reasons for the high prices are usually cost of transporting which includes the cost of fuel and refrigeration for the milk, cost of production, as well as supply and demand. I still don't feel that it should be that expensive but they say the demand made the price go up by about 10% in 2014 alone and there's not much you can really do about it.
Milk is about $1.25 a Liter here, or around $5 a gallon. It's really not that expensive, and you have to remember milk has to be harvested, chilled, transported, pasteurized, packaged in a sterile way, then transported to a store all within it's relatively short shelf life. And it's harvested from cattle, which have to be raised, fed tremendous amounts of food and water, and taken care of. but then again, you drink an outrageous amount of milk. Far beyond what I'd say most people drink, in total, in a day. Have you tried water?
Today, there are brands of packaged milk that have lactase enzyme already added. Such as Lactaid brand and some Smart Balance. There also are Lactaid pills.
If memory serves, I recall most of my daughter's vomiting just after eating - especially when she ate too quickly. It's as it her body wasn't able to separate the air for the burp from the other things in her stomach so Del's air swallowing theory seems plausible.
In Holland everyone i know drinks milk. But I just recently moved to Prague and ordered a glass of milk here in a restaurant. I did get my glass of milk, but they didn't register it on the bill. Supposedly they dont know any milkdrinkers here. So im a mutant who also gets free drinks!
Note that no-where in the video will you hear Hank say that milk is bad for you if you aren't lactose intollerant.... I'm getting so fed up with people claiming milk is bad for you and you should switch that that gross oat-milk substitute crap that vegans drink.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're just angry someone has something they can't, so they want to take it away from them, nobody who truly had any respect for you or your health would argue in such a stupid way.
***** You're pissing me off slightly, because all your facts basically say is that there is a THEORY that it MAY be linked to osteoporosis, and it says that there is little data to support that it is GOOD for bone growth. Note that there is also very little data to suggest it is BAD for bone growth. Come back when you have actual confirmed evidence. that it is BAD, and not just "not beneficial".
***** Again, you're saying the exact same thing. "The link between calcium found in dairy products and strong bones was very weak" this does not mean it affects it in a bad way, this means it doesn't necessarily affect it in a positive way. Neutral does not mean bad. The evidence points to there being no effect on bone density, good or bad. If you find a direct link between osteoporosis and milk, please present it to the scientific community, as I'm sure they've been searching for it for quite some time and would be overjoyed if you found it.
James H with do all respect James ... We don't drink milk or consume cheese for the calcium! We do it because we simply can digest it & nourishing our body with quality protein, calories , and almost complete nutrition of it to human body needs! & ya also it's fu@king delicious!!! & for your information James ... The link between over consumption of calcium in your study IS do to "vitamin A "added as a supplement in food in those country's you mentioned! Just saying 😉
kitsune ken Nice. It's a good trait to pass on, so be sure to have a shit-load of kids. I always see Asians eating ice cream around my university and I think to myself "How can they tolerate that?" The odds that all of them have the Lactase producing gene is pretty much 0%, so they must really like their ice cream!
What da hell!? I thought it was the other way around, with lactose intolerance being the rare condition, and not a 70% of the World population. I live in Mexico and never in my life have known a Lactose intolerant person. I was making the count during this video and I think that in an average day I drink 1.5Lt of cold full Milk and aroudn 1 to 1.5Lt of water. Love cold milk.
I know I'm from Mexico too, and it's the same situation for me!!!, it was only after I moved to the U.S.A that Lactose intolerance became more apparent in people.
@@baldeagle1980 In northern rural Spain every house had cows . In southern locations , they probably had goats or sheep ( usually its milk is said to be more digestive ) , but usually adults , traditionally , had more cheese than proper milk , so , I think that as you get old , milk tolerance can be lower , since cheese has much less lactose than milk .
Milk helps me live! Due to a problematic eating disorder called RFID, I have trouble getting the right nutrients, and my mutant self has been saved by milk time and again! It helps me gain proteins and fat, so my weight stays normal, and when the cold winter sun sweeps in over Scandinavia, I drink milk to keep those vitamins going. Hallelujah for lactase persistence!
Cannot stand the taste of plain milk. Flavored is fine, and I love ice cream of course, but plain milk or plain yogurt both taste like death to me. Anyone else feel that way?
No. Actually I am totally different. Flavored stuff just tastes like plastic to me. I prefer to take natural milk or yogurt and eat it with some granula or muesli.
70% of the world is lactose intolerant? wow.... thats bigger than i thought it would be..... and why didnt you say the percentage of americans that are lactose intolerant?
Dark Red Scorpion Arent Spanish still considered white though? Sir, you are white by European standards, yes, you are in the privileged majority :D Well were at one point in history.
MegaCevapcic nah, mexicans are not considered white. spaniards are though. yes, if we go back far enough we may have had some caucasian blood, but thats irrelevant :P
MCTrick69 I have a mate who is lactose intolerant and he gets a little grumpy that is it.
Wait, *70% of people cant digest lactose??* But drinking milk seems so common, how??
Mind was blown too.
One of those numbers you just "can't" believe! I've never met a single lactose intolerant person. wtf!
Bruno Siqueira Me neither! Probably those 30% are all in the same places, I guess.
If you watch the video to the end you will find that most of them are in Asia and Africa.
It's because of the way the gene spread. It spread to mostly white and Scandinavian people, so if you go to Africa or Asia you will find almost no one drinking milk.
"Milk of human kindness" Strong

Hee hee he....e.😅
YEEEES I legit thought SciShow was making a Fallout 4 reference.

I love milk. Professor Xavier, I'll be expecting a knock on my door soon . Though I actually can't digest onion.. Wrecks my stomach for hours. I also hear that onions are actually poisonous to most animals. Wonder why that is. Maybe its my kryptonite.
Yeah I'm still waiting for Professor Xavier
Same with me i love milk, but no matter how hard i try eating onions is impossible.
I love milk and onions
2mutant4u
GK22psn have you try milking the onion?
I'm not allergic to anything and I can eat onions plus super spicy food. :). I feel like a super mutant now mwah hahaha. Ill be called the dustbin man! Oh wait. shit.
i had like 8 cups of milk last night.
thank u evolution
One good thing to being white
I was eating ice cream while watching this video. Evolution is a wonderful thing.
Dejana Markova just be happy your ancestors had dary for many generations and mutated
Normally i drink 3 to 4 liters of milk every day :)
same if i could afford it aye
this reminds me of where I said something about milk and the reason why it isn't included in a lot of asian dishes is because a lot of asians in asia can't digest milk.
everybody ended up calling me a nazi
Carson Troeh
That's why I'm antisocial.
+Carson Troeh As an Asian myself, I can tell you that all of my Asian friends including my families and myself have no problem with milk...

I freaking LOVE milk. I would hate being lactose intolerant.
I love milk too! I am a teenager and at home I drink milk with all of my meals, from pancakes to pizza. My parents think I'm a weirdo.
Luke Stikeleather That is quite strange XD
thumbs up if you had the urge to drink milk after this video
Thumbs down if you didn't....

I poured a glass of milk then while looking for a vid this was on my subscriber upload list. seemed fitting.
Radon Bust well actually, a comment gets censored if there are enough down-voters. The system kind of sucks.
Please, I was drinking a pint of milk while watching this video. Drinking milk helps me to relax, and it's pretty much the only thing I drink.

That's really weird how Italy has a 60% lactose intolerance rate when the country is known for its Gelato ice cream
Some gelato is milk free
No , it's 40% lactose intolerance and 8 % are immigrant so actually is 30%
Charlie'sGayBand i am Italian and lactose intollerante and litterally I don’t know anyone who is the same
Here everyone eat milk and cheese
Gelato is ice cream in italian
@Giulia there is less lactose in cream than milk and no lactose in aged cheese.
Mutant and *proud*.
Indeed.
Not sure a mutant with that power would make Xaviers team xD
Would really come in handy against LACTOR, the giant lactose monster.

i never knew drinking milk past infancy was an evolution/mutant thing! i literally drink milk every day, it's my favorite drink
agreed, milk is delicious.
I have 8 classes of milk a day along with 3 bowls of cereal
Why wouldn't it be? no other animals do it. Other animals sometimes do retain their liking for it from their childhood, though. (like cats)

No.
Makes sense either way
when water ceases to exist only we shall survive!!!!
I don't think it works like that so.....yeah
RubberDonky when water ceases to exist, everything dies including the cows who make our milk.
Floor Encer
I think the Dust Bowl was caused by over farming
The thing about the fertile crescent, is that it is surrounded by two rivers. The annual flooding of the rivers caused soil to wash up onto the land. This soil was very nutrient rich and very useful for farming. When the flooding stops due to human intervention, so does the yearly deposit of fresh, nutrient rich soil. So in the end, the lack of fertility isn't so much environmental destruction as it is sacrificing one resource, for the increased safety of an area.
I bet the other animals were jealous of our mutant abilities
there not weird and disgusting and probably just don't think about it at all, the way we come about getting milk is gross and milk is still pretty nasty. it seems good but once you stop drinking it and then drink it again it's super nasty.
Not all humans have this
+Carleigh Charlton I disagree with your month old comment.

Cheese does not contain lactose so it's not a big deal.
There is more to the Mediterranean than spain and italy. North africa and the Middle east are the majority of it.
You're not lactose intolerant. Dairy generally makes phlegm thicker in just about everyone; that's not part of being intolerant to it.
Dylan Chance
Yep. Turning milk into yogurt/cheese/etc drastically reduces the amount of lactose in the dairy.
Can I trade in this 'super power' for a better one?
Only if you grind enough XP with your current power to prove yourself. So go take out some criminals with the power of milk.

My mom became lactose intolerant after being pregnant, and my dad grew up with a milk allergy he immunized himself to by continuing to drink it anyway. I'm amazed I don't have issues with milk yet but I fear my day may come.
I didn't know that not much people (including myself) drink milk.
He was a bit unfair with the statistics, most of those people are fine with dairy as long as they don't go overboard, and their side effects are very mild. They're not exactly what you think of when you think of "lactose-intolerant".
lightingbolt85 Also these are people in 3rd world countries that don't go to the store and pick up a few gallons every few days like we can in the US
lightingbolt85 He's not unfair, it's just that most of the developed world can drink milk, but the rest not so much, so people in developed countries feels like most people can drink it.

Scott Thompson You gotta admit milk is better than water, i drink it alongside most meals.
Just a matter of (un-) acquired taste.
lol never said it was a lactose intolerant thing, milk just taste like ass
Milk is phlegmy, heavy grossness.

this video makes me fell special in some weird way. so thank you SciShow
Wait wait wait. You said "legal in cali". Raw milk is illegal in some places? o.o
I can produce the entire world's supply of natural gas for one day with one glass of milk

my dreams have come true!
There is no way that 70% of people in the world have lactose intolerant.....i need a source for that.
Its seems very unlikely...i've met very few people in my life that are lactose intolerant...very few.
bballercheetahfan3 Well...
Korea? Japan?
You & your brother are two of the best teachers ever!
In most parts of europe, the staple bread people eat everyday does not contain milk nor butter.
you realise most of the population in the world lives in Asia
Who was the first person who said,
"i'm gonna drink the liquid that came from this cow's teats"
*5 seconds later* OH GOD I REGRET EVERYTHING,but it do be tasty so let’s try it again
"Oh hi toxic milk!" Milk: "Hi!" Me: "I'LL DRINK YOU."
I can drink 8 glasses of milk without flinching...!
1:42 That goat has got his hair like he likes it 👍
I wish they would hurry up and do research into to why some people seem to spontaneously lose lactose tolerance.
Nothing to research, it's the same mechanism that switches off lactase production around 5-6, yours was just delayed.
Yesss, I'm a super rare asian mutant. Come on ladies, do humanity a favor by helping me spread these genes.
Ew

(i particularly love sci show talk show)
2) i drink so much milk. im often seen sticking my entire head (and sometimes shoulders) into the milk fridge at the grocery store to find the freshest gallon.
Horray for not being a mutant! I'm highly allergic to milk (hives and swelling)
I don't think that being fully allergic to milk is what he's saying is actually normal. just lactose intolerance...
Your shirt causes an optical illusion in which the white squares look black when you move your eyes....
My name is RipTard, and I am a mutant.
70%? Really? I literally don't know anyone who has lactose intolerance!
This is averaged out due to the large population of African and Asians who mostly cannot (90% can't) tolerate lactose. If you are from the US you and the people you know probably have British/European heritage and therefore are fine with lactose.
tilywinn I live in the Mediterranean part of Europe and more than 60% still sounds too much!

tilywinn well according to the map it's around 30-40% (people with tolerance) which seems weird to me, because the first time I ever heard about lactose intolerance was on the internet.

It's evolution, so what? If you can't drink it then don't. Why is raw milk illegal?
Cause it can contain lots of types of bacteria, some of which you don't want to drink.
For the same reason people who drink raw eggs should always buy pasteurized. Germs are bad, plain and simple. Seriously, Salmonella sucks.
It's not illegal, it's just highly regulated. Well depends on where you live obviously. In Idaho you can get raw milk from the local dairy farms, they just don't ship it to other stores.
Crystalvampire66 That doesn't mean it should be illegal though.
MrKnifeFanatic
Certainly not because of the lactose if that's what you think.

Your shirt is pulling a Hermann's Grid illusion in this video, it made concentrating really difficult! lol
70% north Indians can digest milk. In sate of Haryana our motto is " Haryana is where best people eat yogurt and drink milk"
MasterAsra
it should at least be available in a niche kind of way. after all, most people would find it disgusting to drink human milk so you wouldn't have to make that much relative to cow milk.
rayamat01 You can definitely buy human milk online.

I really wonder why I have these intolerances.
who else is lactose intolerant but likes ice cream...
apparently coconut milk doesn't have lactose in it...and i want to try a coconut
Try this. www.lactaid.com/
Their whole milk is what I drink, and their ice cream is good too.
Vadix Vadexi I didn't say you shouldn't drink it, I just said that 1) it's not surprising that it doesn't contain lactose, given that 2) it's not technically milk.
Yeah I still eat it no matter what but the restrooms better be clear or all hell will break loose lol.
Yeah I'm not a mutant! 1oz milk=two days of pain
Yeah! Already knew this but i'm very excited nonetheless
I mostly drink milk I go through about a gallon every day or two kinda sucks since it is super expensive for no reason :(
Well expensive for some reasons but none which really warrant the price to me.
Really? Where do you live? I drink a lot of milk too, perhaps not a gallon a day (that's a freakin' lot to drink man). Here in Glasgow in the UK, I can buy a 4-pint carton of milk for £1.
Jason Fee In Hawaii it's like $8 a gallon. But then again everything is expensive in Hawaii so.
Have you tried water?
seigeengine milk costs more than gasoline! :O
I'M A SUPER HERO
Me too
Today, there are brands of packaged milk that have lactase enzyme already added. Such as Lactaid brand and some Smart Balance. There also are Lactaid pills.
Bow to the Milk tolerant master race!
Marcello Festa MILK MILK MILK MILK MILK MILK
James yang MILK!
Quick Question idea: Why do babies vomit so much?
They have small stomachs and swallow air.
Yea ... People are brain-washed with all fucked-up pseudosciences here😓
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're just angry someone has something they can't, so they want to take it away from them, nobody who truly had any respect for you or your health would argue in such a stupid way.
Just saying 😉
i spend 100yen/day for a litre of milk! :p i love milk since baby! :D
Pecksta100 yes, morning, noon and evening. i like it more than water! :D
Pecksta100 hehe i still bleed red blood! Ken you mean my nickname? yes, they call me koinu or ken here :D
kitsune ken And you're Asian? Well, well. Aren't you lucky? You experience no lactose intolerance?
John Smith yeah! :D my friends dont like milk coz they become gassy and all.
kitsune ken Nice. It's a good trait to pass on, so be sure to have a shit-load of kids. I always see Asians eating ice cream around my university and I think to myself "How can they tolerate that?" The odds that all of them have the Lactase producing gene is pretty much 0%, so they must really like their ice cream!
I want a better super powder than this. lol Good info though. :)
Love cold milk.
yes cold milk is awesome!, it also taste awesome with ice, to make it more chill!
I know I'm from Mexico too, and it's the same situation for me!!!, it was only after I moved to the U.S.A that Lactose intolerance became more apparent in people.
Yall from Europe lmao
Mexico has Spaniards that could drink milk
@@baldeagle1980 In northern rural Spain every house had cows . In southern locations , they probably had goats or sheep ( usually its milk is said to be more digestive ) , but usually adults , traditionally , had more cheese than proper milk , so , I think that as you get old , milk tolerance can be lower , since cheese has much less lactose than milk .
we are not mutants we just have a mutation.
um what..? O.o.. lol
I'm not german, I was just born in germany
Logic. This guy isn't capable of using it.
Where is the logic in this?
Perhaps because many people have the mutation it becomes normal
Well of course, you're a cat. I'll make a deal with you- can have my milk and yogurt, if I get your flavored milk. Deal?
Lol. I was serious actually. And I am not sorry taht I do not havy any flavored milk to offer XD
I feel the same
I like both
70% of the world is lactose intolerant? wow.... thats bigger than i thought it would be..... and why didnt you say the percentage of americans that are lactose intolerant?
Potato King nope, not white. i'm hispanic..... mexican-american
Potato King but..... but.... he didnt mention the americas in the video...... and i'm too lazy to research it myself :P
Dark Red Scorpion
Arent Spanish still considered white though? Sir, you are white by European standards, yes, you are in the privileged majority :D Well were at one point in history.
MegaCevapcic nah, mexicans are not considered white. spaniards are though. yes, if we go back far enough we may have had some caucasian blood, but thats irrelevant :P
MegaCevapcic Do you not understand the difference between Spanish and the actual native South Americans?
