      @@OptimusWombat Don't you think they'd always be shooting nukes at the Cylon baseships? I dunno.....
      From my perspective, they had the wrong approach throughout most of the show.
      They were heavily outnumbered and should have taken up much different tactics. (e.g. guerilla)
      Use Pegasus to manufacture jump capable ships or repurpose some of the crappier colony ships to be bombs. Do recon to find where baseships where, jump the bomb ship in at close ranger and detonate.

    The bigger strike to the Cylons here was them being shaken because suddenly the Significant Seven didn't operate through concensus anymore. That caused a rift in their controlling body which was more damaging than any nuclear warhead would have been. The "bluff" was worth it.

    • @moteroargentino7944
      @moteroargentino7944 2 года назад +46

      Along the series we see events take place in a way that truly looks like it's planned ahead. Like with the cylon killing virus. Had they gone with the genocide route and some cylons survived, they would be united in hate towards humanity and the cycle would continue. Here, had Adama launched the nukes, the sparks of the cylon civil war wouldn't have ignited and mankind would have been doomed.

    • @gkmotorsport

      I also realised only now that the same thing was happening on Galactica, but mirrored. There was no consensus, Adama was exercising his command, and the others were forced to follow despite their obvious reservations. D'anna showed a brief flash of the same mentality and it terrified the others.

      @knghtbrd 3 года назад +1

      There's kind of a mix of things in my mind here. First, many missile systems on real world fighters have a yield range that can be configured prior to loading. They can decide how much boom boom to put in them. And that certain missiles can even have different kinds of warheads fitted.
      The second is that, again real world, several nations maintain some number of ICBM long-range ground-to-ground delivery systems preloaded with nuclear warheads. And that a staple of Cold War tropes at least was the nuclear sub with the ICBMs requiring two keys activated at the same time in different places by different people as a measure against some one individual nut firing one.
      So if Galactica managed to pick up warheads at Ragnar Anchorage … what security would they have been under? I mean, that has to be where they came from because the Galactica needed "something to shoot" otherwise and you don't just leave nuclear weapons stationed aboard a tourist trap.
      Once they were aboard Galactica, obviously they would've gone into high security lockup … but they just loaded those warheads on ship to ground missiles? or Were they mounted to those missiles and set up to only be launched by keys? Or what? And do they need those keys to launch them against base stars?
      The answer is that maybe if I am wondering about these and other science facts (la-lala), I should tell my self it's just a show. I really should relax. 😉

    • @bohellan6227
      @bohellan6227 3 года назад

      @@knghtbrd I attempted to simplify the missile part because you can honestly write books about the different parts of a missile and how they play a big role.
      As for the nukes, I assume they are stored in some amount on all Battlestars as a deterrent and also so they can be made ready quickly should war break out.
      Battlestars would obviously make up the core of any ad hoc fleet or strike group and would be expected to be able to respond to any conceivable situation, including the launch or ground strikes on hostile worlds, perhaps as part of a first strike or just destruction of hostile planetside assets (leaving out talk of ship-to-ship since it doesn't pertain here, and we've seen Battlestars fire nukes at Basestars before).
      As for how they were made ready so fast, we don't know how long the entire sequence took, so its hard to estimate. But considering they were in VLS type cells, it makes sense they'd have a way to autoload or have them placed into the conveyor quickly. To expand on that a bit further; it would make sense that missiles would be easily configurable from nuclear to conventional etc, because of the nature of shifting battlefield conditions. So no doubt the Battlestars were designed with this in mind.
      I'd also theorize they had a set amount of nukes aboard since the Galactica wasn't fully decommissioned at the outbreak of the 2nd Cylon war. They probably didn't have as many as say, the Pegasus. But they picked up at least 5 nukes of some sort at Ragnar, and also more than likely inherited Pegasus' inventory of various missiles and warheads.
      When it comes to whether they could launch swiftly against another ship without going through the whole firing code and key turning, I'd say it would depend on the Battlestar design.
      We saw Lee being able to set up a nuclear strike without his XO just by giving the proper orders, but this is more likely because the Pegasus is newer and more streamlined (as for the keys & codes, I imagine them being the final component to make the warhead active).
      It's obvious that Battlestar commanders have the authority to order a nuclear launch using their own authority, but this more likely stems from being a massive capital ship expected to perform on its own for long periods of time without resupply (and as so it would function as a de facto strategic platform to launch every manner of incursions and fleet action under the sun).
      Imma stop here. TL;DR: They probably had nukes to begin, and inherited all of Pegasus' nukes after its destruction by the inept son.

    This was such a great series filled with wonderful, believable moments all through it. I think for me anyways what made it even more believable is that it was relatable. The Cylons stuffed themselves right from the start with poor information. If you think about it. The Cylons attacked the colonies on the day of the decommissioning of the Galactica. If they had of waited even a week longer. Adama and none of the rest of the crew would have been onboard and the ship would not have been a threat. Another point a lot of people seem to forget that because Galactica was about to be decommissioned that some of her armor and weapons had already been removed. True the other Battlestars (Pegasus etc) were newer and much more advanced. But, personally I wonder were they truly as powerful. My feeling is yes, they had the weaponry, yes they had the capability. But i do not think they ever had the amount of amour and protection that Galactica had and more importantly they never had Adama in command. The only really poor decision I felt that was made in the series was the loss of the Pegasus, that was unnecessary and not needed it could have jumped away after Galactica got out. But, I also know the shows budget could not stretch to having a second Battlestar in the show which was a pity. And, I guess it did make for a dramatic episode.

    • @the_omg3242
      @the_omg3242 11 месяцев назад +1

      I don't think it was so much a budget issue as a story issue that the Pegasus had to go. Keeping it in the fleet would have changed the dynamic of the story too much since the show is about a single warship protecting the last of humanity. Every decision has to be based on the fact that loosing the Galactica will result in the death of the fleet. All risks have to be measured against that. The Pegsus would give them the means to wage war on the Cylons rather than just running from them for survival.
      There's also the issue of it dividing the fleet and risking a human civil war since by the time it joined the fleet the Pegasus was pretty much acting as a pirate ship by looting civilian ships, conscripting their crews to forced labor and abandoning what's left. Much of it's crew would have been considered criminals or pirates by the rest of the fleet, trials would be required, people would flock to both sides and they'd lose focus from the Cylon threat.
      It had to go to keep the story of the search for Earth intact.

      I think the Ship-to-Ship variety of nukes has less procedures than the Ship-to-Ground variety given that one is probably done in the heat of combat (i.e. the Pegasus prepping to nuke the Guardian Basestar was markedly faster than the Galactica here). On top of that, the procedures are usually circumvented by the fact that the nukes are usually carried by Vipers or Raptors rather than launched by the Battlestar itself.
