I believe the biggest problem is drugs, alcohol and politics. Here in NC they stand on the street corner dancing around with their sign and dog but refuse to work. They leave their trash around. But the politicians don't care. Mental ill is one thing but not wanting to work and do good is another.

i believe a lot is trauma. what happens to people as children lives on into adulthood. drugs and alcohol used as "therapy"/ escape from those demons that lie within from tragic events as children. horrifically, alaska has a very high rate of all forms of child abuse. :((

What you need is RENTER'S/HOME INSURANCE. If they stole them out of your car, your car insurance will cover it IF you have COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE. Otherwise you should get a PERSONAL ARTICLES INSURANCE POLICY. This policy can cover ALL of your musical equipment vs. damage/theft no matter what happens to them or where or how. That's what I have for my $10k gun collection. It's only 200 a year! Worth it man! Sorry about your stuff 😢 I feel for you. Keep your head up. You now have an excuse to buy yourself a new axe!! Rock on.

Throughout the whole video I was saying 'this can't be real.' How does it get to this and in such a short amount of time?? It's got pretty bad over here in my part of oregon. But a lot of it is because the average house price is like 650k now, and the median household income is less than 60k. Rent is just insane and there's not enough places to go. We recently started a small village of shacks on city land for those in dire need, with the expectation that they must help the community, there can't be any drugs at the grounds, and everyone has to chip in to help the grounds until they can find work. Lets them get an address so they can get jobs and stay clean so they can get back on their feet. I don't think there's a silver bullet to the issue because it's so damn complex and so many parts to it. I'm with you there, I'm just one guy and I can't fix it all. I at least try to volunteer at the kitchens and stuff when I can.

Maybe it's my love of irony, but "how do you get into this tent city?" followed a few minutes later with "there's no way out. It's only one way in here," in reference to another tent city... To answer the first, any number of things that have already been touched on in the comments: alcoholism, drug addiction, mental illness, ex-cons, and people who "fell down" in life and never quite made it back up again. This is THEIR COMMUNITY and you're criticizing them for sticking together. Nobody else is going to help them so at least they have each other. This is ALASKA. You have an income, a home, your own community, and HEAT. Can you imagine having to live in a nylon tent in the winter? Seriously?
Why, yes, everything is better if you have a vehicle.
"There's no way out..." How do you think they feel? Everyone they know (who isn't steadily judging them) is homeless and undoubtedly they know people who have lived this way for over a decade or even much longer. To get back into "society" requires steps that we may see as simple but may be monumental to them. Many of those who live this way are also veterans and can no longer live inside because of mental illness related to their service. Rising housing costs (along with other rising costs) and stagnant wages don't help matters either. Homelessness WILL continue to increase as these issues continue to be ignored.
Earlier in the video you said something like "those people, I feel so bad for them," then you followed it with "they have to see that when they look out their windows everyday." Well, yes, that's true as well, but people don't generally choose to live in a tent; they do it because they have to. Should they clean up after themselves? Absolutely. Should there be better solutions? Absolutely. Do I have them? No, I do not. Do you? No. You seem to think that stealthily filming them will somehow remedy the situation. You talk about "spending the night" out there as if it's summer camp. I'd be willing to bet that you wouldn't last the night.

I believe alot of the alaskan have abused drugs and alchohol from a young age and never learned any skills. They rather take a hand out which gives them more of a reason to not even try to work. Dont get me wrong there are a few that just had some bad luck and lost everything. There is so many jobs tho. Its a mind set i guess. But you are right about the tent cities they are so polluted and some are right in the neighborhoods which drop property values and have a higher rate of theives going thru your yards unlocked vehicles. It gotta suck to be homeless but it also sucks for the average tax payers. And its getting way worse.😢

I am a second-generation Alaskan. I was born and raised here in Anchorage. In my youth, I lived off Dimond Blvd (South Side); for most of my adulthood I lived within minutes of Boundary (East Side), and now I live just minutes from Denali St (by bicycle).
The real problem is lack of concern for our homeless population. The Municipality of Anchorage has not taken any meaningful action to lifting people up, as a good community ought to.
The vast majority of our homeless people are also from here, and they were raised with much if not all the same values I was. They deserve to receive the help of the community.
The video used here reminds true Alaskans that “Tent Cities” are how many settlements in Alaska started, and how they continue.
So whether the OP decides to change his tact, or not, I hope he puts his vote where his mouth is.

Then after we closed it, the entire city was pissed because now they’re on every corner downtown, suburbs, grocery stores, etc. I’m like, what the F did y’all think was gonna happen?
