Do you realize how beautiful they are, I love them and I have Meg to thank for that. I'm in California. She's a retired RN but cared for adults in the neuro intensive care, as I'm the pediatric icu nurse but disabled right now. You have given me hope for a new passion if I ever feel well again. Wild life rescue. 💞
Meg has also inspired me too. All of her adorable flying fox babies that she saves, just amazing! I hope you recover enough to do whatever you want to, very soon. I am also a disabled RN. 5 spinal surgeries and now I have to have the last two redone, my hardware is coming loose, ugh! Best wishes!!

I always wanted to be a nurse right from when I was young. I have used some of the star, moon or moon names previously; I had Ganymede, Jupiter, Callisto and Io at one stage. And Betelgeuse and Bellatrix.
Breaks my heart when they cry so loudly. Makes me fret when they're so passive. Call me fickle! She's a gorgeous wee thing - so happy she's a survivor! Your tone when talking to her was so soothing, so lovely. Thank you for everything you do!

I came to bats about 15 years ago, totally by accident when I joined wildlife rescue to raise parrot chicks in Spring. The rescue course gave little snippets of info on different animals - possums, birds, reptiles, bats... and I fell in love with the idea of bats then and did the bat course. The love for them individually came over a few years as I learned to handle them more confidently instead of being terrified of being bitten. I loved the babies instantly.

When I joined wildlife rescue to raise and care for parrot chicks in Spring, I didn't expect that I would somehow fall in love with bats (totally accidentally) and never rescue or raise parrots or possum joeys, but ending up rescuing bats exclusively. They're endlessly fascinating and engaging.
Ophiuchi already seems to be improving judging by the show of fang she's giving you later at home. I hope this is a marked sign of her getting better. The bat nebula is incredible. It looks just like a flying fox with the orange ruff. Glad I know now of its existence.

She's very young and probably terrified so she's very passive. She'll wild up when she goes in with other bats. Or she'll be disdainful of the human furless giant slaves.
It depends on whether the bat will stay with me or not, what kind of name I give it. The babies can be named anything, but if it's going to stay with me I tend to name it with a really special (to me) name. If the baby is moved along, I lose the name and the new carer often renames them something less outlandish. For instance, Crikey last year or the year before, was renamed George (seriously??). I called one bat Tinuviel; she was a late night rescue a few years back, during the bushfires; the wind had come onshore and blown away the smoke haze, and for the first time an ages, I could see the sky and stars. Tinuviel means daughter of starry twilight... Tinuviel is from Tolkien's work. So if it's an awesome name I like to keep it and use it for as long as possible. With the adults, they don't stay with me for more than a day or 2, so I use a location as a memory tag; a variation on the place they were found, or something which reminds me of the location (and thus the rescue scenario and the bat's individual story).
@@Megabattie Linda from Ontario Canada here. You have an unique gift for naming the bats. My dog who sat like an amphibian was affectionately nicknamed Auggy doggy froggy dog when In the house. Outside we used her regular name that was nowhere near that.

She does looked dazed and so happy she’s a survivor. I love the names you give the survivors. I wonder if boys or girls are the more likely to survive. We found that in the NICU the girls were more likely to survive as their lungs, etc developed much sooner than the boys and they did much better with less drastic measures.
I give them names regardless of whether or not they survive. I don't think there's a difference between male and female survival rates, though it's really interesting that there is a notable survival difference in premmies.

Hey do you have any thoughts/expert advise w/regard to what medicine to administer topically or in food (like on nuts) for mange for small animals (like squirrels?) and if you’ve ever used ivermectin? I used to buy it on a website for squirrels but then Covid wiped ivermectin off the map… now it’s available at horse supply stores, but I’m not sure if ivermectin paste is better or gel … i’m you biggest fan (;)) but I’ve never seen anything like mange in. Flying foxes… but maybe I missed one.. thank you Meg!
Sorry, Tracy, but I have no expertise in ivermectin for squirrels. I use it for the bats but not for wild mobile animals. Contact your local wildlife groups to see if they have any suggestions. Flying-foxes don't get mange.
Hi Denise, I don't discuss analgesia on the channel - it opens a can of worms among the FF carers as tho whose vet will give it to them and whose won't, and as to whether or not it is an appropriate drug (usually brought up by people who can't get this drug for their bats). It's easier to just not discuss it. This is not a "how to" video for carers.
Bats seem to be unphased by being poked with needles..I've seen 4 or 5 videos so far where the bats are given one shot or another, or giving blood & not a single one of them even flinch. Impressive...
Ah, that's because I am really good; LOL, I lie. They have no fear of needles because they don't know what they are. They have no mother tensing up whenever the doctor is giving their baby a needle, so they don't have the learned behaviour and the mother's fear to influence them. They also have very sharp claws and they often snag themselves with their own claws. They don't like it if there's glucose in the subcut injection because it stings a bit. But otherwise I have very fine needles and they don't seem to notice
Hah, another one who peed when the water was running. Those grapes are expensive. If I didn't live at the other end of the world, I'd deliver my home-grown grapes to you.
@@Megabattie if I lived there and could afford it I would by a large tract of land in Sydney near a colony and turn it into a bat haven. Plant their favorite foods set it up so they had a safe place to feed and put up feeding stations so I could leave them food when things are scarce.

Hey do you have any thoughts/expert advise w/regard to what medicine to administer topically or in food (like on nuts) for mange for small animals (like squirrels?) and if you’ve ever used ivermectin? I used to buy it on a website for squirrels but then Covid wiped ivermectin off the map… now it’s available at horse supply stores, but I’m not sure if ivermectin paste is better or gel … i’m you biggest fan (;)) but I’ve never seen anything like mange in. Flying foxes… but maybe I missed one.. thank you Meg!
Sorry, Tracy, but I have no expertise in ivermectin for squirrels. I use it for the bats but not for wild mobile animals. Contact your local wildlife groups to see if they have any suggestions.

Hi Denise, I don't discuss analgesia on the channel - it opens a can of worms among the FF carers as tho whose vet will give it to them and whose won't, and as to whether or not it is an appropriate drug (usually brought up by people who can't get this drug for their bats). It's easier to just not discuss it.
This is not a "how to" video for carers.

Bats seem to be unphased by being poked with needles..I've seen 4 or 5 videos so far where the bats are given one shot or another, or giving blood & not a single one of them even flinch. Impressive...
Ah, that's because I am really good; LOL, I lie. They have no fear of needles because they don't know what they are. They have no mother tensing up whenever the doctor is giving their baby a needle, so they don't have the learned behaviour and the mother's fear to influence them. They also have very sharp claws and they often snag themselves with their own claws.
They don't like it if there's glucose in the subcut injection because it stings a bit.
But otherwise I have very fine needles and they don't seem to notice

@@Megabattie if I lived there and could afford it I would by a large tract of land in Sydney near a colony and turn it into a bat haven. Plant their favorite foods set it up so they had a safe place to feed and put up feeding stations so I could leave them food when things are scarce.
