See what happens deep inside a cocoon. Watch highlights of a 36 hr ordeal as a cecropia caterpillar becomes a pupa. Witness the actual shed in real time.
for anyone else that watches this and thinks this guy killed the moth by cutting away the cocoon, no that is not how it works. animals who use cocoons to make transformations like this only use the shell of the cocoon as protection from the outside world. the cocoon is not a part of their body and it can be carefully cut away to reveal the pupa inside. however, for butterflies that form a chrysalis, if any part of it is damaged it will kill the butterfly as the chrysalis is its actual body/outer skin that will be shed when they are done with metamorphosis.
This is so beautiful. Thank you for documenting this
Very lovely to watch :) Was always curious to see this. It's a miracle, indeed ! thank you!
Can you please make a monarch caterpillar video

Did the pupa in the cutaway cocoon remain viable all the way to eclosing as a flying moth?
Thank you for this glimpse into a wonder. Also, can you please identify the music? I'm guessing it to be Mahler.
Rubbra, not Mahler. Patience furthers.
but they died.... didn't they?

No. The coccon is just a silky shell that protects the pupa or chrysalis insids. Plud the caterpillar is not dead. It is the pupa.
