I’ve had my MSO5104, with LA probe kit for about 15 months. It too is now a MSO5354. I have little criticism for it, especially in light of its original REFURB price, which was significantly discounted from retail.
The included 350 MHz passive probes SEEM to be matched for a 350MhHz instrument. I don’t have a fast sine wave generator but do have a fast-rise pulse generator, (1.7ns speced). There is little visible difference between a properly terminated coax cable and the same signal measured with the included probes. I’m impressed.
Just like the old Tek 7000 series “Mainframe” scopes, you’ll have better performance using channels 1 & 3 instead of 1 & 2, in 2 channel operation. Channels 1 & 2 both share the same A-to-D ASIC as do channels 3 & 4. Using channels 1 & 3 gets full benefit of both ASICs. Three and four channel operation cause the ASIC sharing.
Regarding the Logic Analyzer specs, you’ll find:
·Standard 16 digital channels, just buy a PLA2216 active logic probe
·25 Mpts memory depth for the waveforms of all the digital channels
    ·Up to 1 GSa/s sample rate
·Hardware real-time waveform recording and playback functions
    supported
·Mixed (analog channel and digital channel) trigger and decode supported
·Convenient digital channel grouping and group operation
    From the manual:
    Vertical System Digital Channel
    Number of Channels - 16 input channels (D0~D15) (D0~D7, D8~D15)
    Threshold Range - ±15.0 V, in 10 mV step
Threshold Accuracy - ±(100 mV + 3% of the threshold setting)
    Threshold Selection - TTL(1.4 V), COMS5.0(2.5 V), COMS3.3(1.65 V), COMS2.5(1.25 V), COMS1.8(0.9 V), ECL(-1.3 V), PECL(3.7 V), LVDS(1.2 V), 0.0 V User (adjustable threshold for 8 channels in a group)
    Max. Input Voltage - ± 40 V peak CAT I; transient overvoltage 800 Vpk
    Max. Input Dynamic Range - ±10 V + threshold
Minimum Voltage Swing - 500 mVpp

I recently purchased 200 MHZ series Rigol scope and bandwidth upgraded to 350 M HZ. I decided to measures its bandwidth. So i was giving a 75 MHz Squarewave from STM32 development board(3 .3 V, gpio signal driven by timer) initially. while doing this i observed the squarewave is getting attentuated and loosing its shape.i have doubt like
    1) shouldn't we use the PVP2350 probes to do this test?
    2) shouldn't we use squarewave to test the bandwidth of the scope?
    3) how to proove my scope is actually 350 MHz ?
replies would help me to understand more about the bandwidth

  • @homemdosaco2000
    @homemdosaco2000 3 года назад +6

    Congratulations.
My first scope was a Rigol DS1054Z, just like the one you "threw away", and I though it was a good thing the bandwidth was significantly higher than stated. Then, I bought a second hand name brand scope, and was startled how much more accurate the front end filter was.
With so much higher bandwidth, one has to be *really* careful about the signal and sampling frequency, and be aware that maybe the active channels need to be reduced. A "trap for young players", as Dave would say.

    • @XD-nj7bc
      @XD-nj7bc 3 года назад +1

What do you mean with "maybe the active channels need to be reduced"?

    • @homemdosaco2000
      @homemdosaco2000 3 года назад +3

@@XD-nj7bc I mean that dsos, in order to increase sampling rate, do interleaving when some channels are off. So, if your scope has four channels, you'll see doubled sampling rate at 2 active channels, and quadrupled sampling rate with one active channel.
That can be useful if your front end filter is bad, and your probed signal has higher freq content, to prevent aliasing.
You do not want aliasing In a signal you're investigating.

I updated to the current firmware (V00.01.03.03.00) then ran the script that works with the updated firmware, apparently after a new firmware update is made available a new hack has to be created in the form of a script that is run the same way a firmware update is made on the MSO5000. I purchased the MSO5074 to get the 4 probes, Rigol’s PVP2350 probes are quite good probes. I too picked up the PLA2216 LA probe.

I don't have a fast analog scope to compare. The older digitals had lots of issues. The newer ones are much better or as good as analog now. EEVBLOG has done some videos on this subject. Lets face it, the thing is glitchy, boot time wait is long, and if I would have to pay over $5k for glitches this thing has, I would be pissed… don’t get me wrong, it’s a great little scope for the money, assuming you can open up all the options…

Pretty much all the digital scopes can be hacked, they don't get hacked if they are several thousand dollars since no one wants to take that risk. When they sent an early demo model to Dave of EEVBLOG he suggested if the scope was hacked it would be difficult to keep on the shelf, do you think Rigol and Siglent would keep sending him scopes knowing that all the hacks are released on his site.

Very nice scope. Thanks for the look.

Just a thought, I would hold onto the old one as a backup.

Already sold it. Needed the money as $900 is still a lot. I still have a TEK 336. I need to show that one someday.

This is all fake like most RUclips videos! The post on eevblog is useless as it just talks about different firmware versions so I doubt there is any way to hack this model. Also I don't believe it can go up to 500 Mhz either, that's impossible!

I suggest you pay full price then.

I'm curious about your impossible comment. Looks like you have a TEK 454 100MHz scope. TEK made 500MHz scope didn't they? anyway this scope is 8 giga samples per seconds. If you understand Nyquist sampling theory, do the calculation for maximum frequency.

@@IMSAIGuy It doesn't matter since they don't have the hack available for any current versions of firmware on eevblog anyway! It's all just a scheme to sell more scopes by releasing the rumor they can be hacked!

@@stevec5000 I have the very latest firmware and the hack works on that. I hope you can learn from this channel and not just complain.

I did the same mod to my DSO5104. I connected it up to an RF signal generator. Running on channel 1 only, it was dead flat up to 500MHz, and rolled off to -3dB ay 650MHz. The probes, not so good. They were all over the place above 100MHz. But they are cheap $20 Chinese probes, stamped with the letters PVP2350. It takes big $ to get really good probes.

Do you know which reply contains newest info on step by step hack?

It is common to share an ADC between two channels, Hence when you turned on ch2 the level dropped.
A 4 channel scope will usually have 2 ADCs
Redo the test but turn on ch3 r5ather than ch2 and see if that does the same, better still feed in the same signal to ch3 and see if both channels work at the 500Mhz level. Hopefully you will fing that you have two channels that run at the max speed.
Nice looking scope, I'm sure you will enjoy using it.
Scope probes - they vary I have a couple of 350Mhz probes for my Siglent, but I generally use a set of cheapo ebay 100Mhz probes for most work. I'm not so fussed if they get mangled :-)
The logic probe, expensive option - but I did the same and bought the logic probe for my Siglent as well, The first time you need to do a bit of decoding, they pay for themselves.

      Good call:
      one channel 8Gs/s
      chan 1 and 3 4Gs/s
      chan 1 and 2 2 Gs/s
      never lower than 2Gs/s
