    How does the sear from the sear box compare to the sear from the sidekick bbq box? The sidekick seems pretty nice and I like the accessories but ultimately a good sear is more important to me if the sear box is noticeably better.

    Im in the market for my first pellet grill, coming from an electric smoker meant that I had to start from scratch on researching. The camp chef caught my eye mainly because of the sidekick which adds a level of versatility that puts up above the competition. Yes the others claim to sear but you have to use the main cooking area for it. Like you mentioned, to be able to make bacon on the sidekick while your grilling patties on the grill is a game changer. You did a fine job at comparing these two grills and got a new subscriber. Great job👍

    • @scottnra

      alex3610va Sear box is GREAT for searing but not so great at anything else. The Sidekick comes with a CI griddle that is also great for searing but you can do all kinds of other things on the griddle as well. ALso you can lift off the griddle and it's not a great pot burner for steaming/boiling, heating etc. Plus you can add the pizza oven or grill topper to it if you like as well. Scott - nice comparison - what I was looking for. But some questions on the sidekick vs sear box. I really want that small area to cook a 'normal burger or hotdog', or grill vegetables, and also be able to sear meat. The sear box looks like it has much better heat distribution and grease collections than the sidekick. Does the sear box have enough temperature control to do more than sear meat?
    Also - the sidekick grill box looks like it has no grease control - any grease that doesn't burn off will just sit in the bottom of the box (assuming it has no holes in it) and eventually you'll have to clean that up - quite a mess. But I can't find any good pictures of the whole box, nor find anyone who's commented or used it enough to tell me if it will end up being a greasy mess after some use.
    You've used both now for a while - which is the better attachment for the tasks above - aka if you didn't care about having the griddle or pizza oven, which side box works better as a 'tiny grill/searing machine'?
    Thanks

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra 4 года назад

      Perry Schmidt I use the grease box on the sidekick with a foil bucket liner squished into it and it works well. No different than the buckets on the sides of the grill. THe Sear box has a grease tray...that won't fit a liner. Either way, you have to clean something haha. If the grill part is more important to you get the sear box. If you want the versatility of the flat top, get the sidekick. I hope that helps.

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra 4 года назад +1

      olopez0769k Of course. It has too. THe auger cycles on and off to feed pellets. Feed - burn -feed - burn etc. When they feed is when you get the most smoke. We are working with "Average temps" not solid steady temps. Your oven works the same way but you don't have a probe in it giving constant feedback. The new Wifi woodwind controller lets you choose smoke settings on any temp set below 330* Smoke 1 will be very close temp swings, less smoke. Smoke 10 will be high temp swings more smoke.

      JuiceWorthTheSqueeze It's all powder coated. I have yet to see any rust on one. I could only guess but The only cooker O have has to really maintain for rust is an offset smoker that would burn the paint off the firebox.. THat one has to be wire brushed and touched up after every few cooks. I've had it over 10 years. I don't see it being a concern for any Camp Chef at least half way maintained and kept covered.

      Chris The sidekick is more versatile. It has a big burner great for pots of steaming crabs or boiling stuff under the griddle. The griddle will easily sear GREAT! and you can add the pizza oven or grilling station to it as needed also. Having had both, the sidekick would be my choice hands down.

    Regarding the Sidekick vs Searbox, I'm sure you know that there's something special about a steak quick-seared on a 900+ degree surface. Does the griddle on the Sidekick get anywhere near that temperature? I have found that for doing the things the Sidekick does, putting a cast iron skillet on a propane stove is a pretty cheap option or you could get a Camp Chef Explorer for $130 and still use a Sidekick if you absolutely had to use their griddle or pizza cooker. I don't have a tenth of the experience as you, but is there a similarly affordable option for putting a 900 degree sear on a steak? Is there a good alternative to a Searbox that I'm not aware of? Or does the griddle attachment on the Sidekick really do an indistinguishable or comparable job?

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra 4 года назад

      Troy Adam I don't have a thermometer that goes that high. I'll tell you that the CI surface gets hot enough to discolor or warp it of you get it too hot. just like a CI pan would...so best I can tell you is I think so. Thanks to a tick bite, I can't enjoy a steak at the moment to try it out. The last one about out me in the ER. :-(

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra 4 года назад

      Mark Thilenius Yep. THat's how pellet grills work. It's not an oven. auger feeds pellets ans as they ignite you get less smoke adn higher temps, then as they burn down at some point set by the computer it begins feeding pellets again and you get more smore smoke, the temp keeps going down as pelets ignite until it starts going back up again. If you got perfectly constant tamps, you'd have very little smoke flavor. They work on "Average" cooking temp. youre average for what you listed is a bit over 217. Pretty close. ALso pellets are wood and of different lengths so you would get some fluctuation just from the amount of fuel fed each time as well.

    Do you need to punch holes through the aluminum foil if you don't plan to do any direct heat cooking?

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra 4 года назад +1

      Bryan Smith Probably not. This pan does tend to hold a little more gunk than the flat ones either way but foil helps cleaning.

      Hi Scott, great video! Just to be clear, adding the holes to the foil does expose the food to the direct flame, if you so choose? I just ordered one and I worried about doing that as the Camp Chef site does not recommend it if you choose to do direct heat. I want to do direct heat and keep the gunk from building up on the pan.

    • @crack_of_dawn
      @crack_of_dawn 3 года назад

      @@direwolfi I personally just let the pan get gunked up and after every few cooks put it into a bucket of water with some degreaser in it then rinse it off, less effort than covering it in foil IMO, especially if you have to cut slits in the foil.

    Hi Scott, thanks for the videos, and thanks in advance if you can help out with my question! I've never owned or used a smoker, strictly gas grilling so far. My current gas grill needs to be replaced. Name brand gas grills seem to run around the same price as pellet smokers and the popular ceramic smokers, but gas grills don't have the versatility of a smoker. Because the smoker has more range for the same price I'm inclined to get a smoker, even if I never use that feature. I'm not opposed to smoking, but for arguments sake, let's say I never end up smoke cooking. Having a smoker as my only grill, will I miss the familiarity and trust of a traditional gas grill? So far all I can find in major differences between general use in smokers vs gas grills are cleaning procedures, time to reach temps and max operating temp, which are all things I can get used to.
    The too long to read summary is, can these smokers easily replace an everyday grill, or do they better serve specific cooking need?

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra 4 года назад

      James Cunningham Great questions! YES, a Pellet grill gas replace your gas grill understanding the things you already laid out. Grill Grates on top of the ones that come with it will help you get the sear marks and searing you are used to on a gasser, and help it cook more like a gasser, where a pellet grill acts a bit more like a wood fired convection oven than a grill at most settings. You will ALWAYS get some smoke flavor on your food because you are cooking with WOOD. How much will depend on your settings. (I've even do es PIZZA on a stone at 500* on mine!) I hope that helps.

    I was curious if camp chef would improve their control unit since everyone else seems to have done that. They are making it very difficult to choose which cooker to buy!!

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra 4 года назад +1

      robhimself79 This controller is so much better. As you saw, you can control everything including smoke settings across all temperatures up to 350*. The direct grilling feature, burn pot dump, 4 probe wifi controller/ap etc. I think that decision got easier haha. There are a lot of other really good pellet grills on the market and several in this price range but no where near all these features.

    Scott, one question for you. I live in an area that has all four seasons and they can hit hard. How thick is the metal on the grill? Will the grill be able to maintain the temp internally on a windy day or even on a rainy day? Do you have any personal experiences with cooking for long hours on a windy day? It can be windy more days here than not and would be bummed to find out the hard way if this grill cant sustain windy days. Thanks in advance!

      Max Olinger Well you put a lot of moving targets out there. I prefer to cook indoors on days where there is a monsoon or blizzard going on so I couldn't tell you about those. I guess you could find a weather condition where any cooker could struggle but if those are your typical living conditions...I'D MOVE! "Windy" is a pretty relative term. If it's 35 degrees and blowing 25mh sustained, yeah, you'll use more pellets, but again, I'd cook something inside on a day like that... or move haha. definitely move.

    Let me start by saying how much I absolutely love my camp chef Woodwind Grill. After watching these videos, I decided to upgrade and bought the Wi-Fi module. First off, words of caution. Read the reviews on the App Store. They only get one and a half star for good reason. It’s a complete waste of money. My Wi-Fi router is literally 15 feet from my grill and it still constantly loses communications. Unless you’re standing within 10 feet via Bluetooth, it’s a waste of money. If you don’t believe, Just read the reviews. I love my camp chef grill, one of the best investments I ever made. But don’t waste your money on this Wi-Fi controller it’s a piece of absolute garbage!!

      American Soldier 777 It IS a bit glitchy on the wifi. However, with 4 probes and much better control over the cooker including separate temp and smoke settings, I submit that is not total garbage and at the very least a much better CONTROLLER of the cooker than the old one. (Which is it's primary job)

    • @scottnra
      @scottnra 4 года назад

      JP It should not have a bad grease fire if you are not letting it build up. on the deflector and then get it way too hot. Thats one reason I like the foil on the drip tray. It's easy to replace and clean after a few greasy cooks. Camp Chef does a great job of grease management as do most of the other pellets grills.

      Which feature? I'll cool with correction. As for durability, It doesn't sit out in the weather, and I don't need to sit car engines on it. I'm getting very good durability out of the other one I've had for about 2-1/2 years now.... No Complaints.
