At the time where I lived it was the only all night show just at that time of year. I watched this on KFSN TV Fresno which carried the MDA telethon from 1971 to 1977 and moved to KMJ TV 24 ( later became KSEE in 1981) from 1978 to 1993 then to KMPH FOX 26 from 1994 to its end in 2010. We would stay up and watch the stars come out.
It's 2024 and Count Basie's Orchestra first performed this song when I was a year old. About 20 years later, I became a Count Basie fan when he and a condensed version of his orchestra appeared in the opening scene of Blazing Saddles about three years before this telethon aired in '77. Jerry's conducting and comedic dance interpretation of the song are classic Lewis. Basie's 'one mo' time' went an extra two more times in order for producers to cut to the tally board when the new total of money pledged was ready for Jerry to announce.
The inimitable Count Basie Orchestra and a really creative arrangement of "April in Paris". By the way, a very subdued and bittersweet performance was done by Dinah Shore, accompanied by André Previn on piano. Great song.
Too bad lewis didn't know how to "conduct" an orchestra. But since the musicians were total pros, they didn't need him up there swinging his arms around.
Yeah he used count Basie many times in his movies and he was a big fan growing up. Obviously that was a memorable moment to conduct the count Basie band on live television
Well, note it wasn't just Basie's band playing. The Sax's and horns from Lou Brown's band were playing as well, adding to the volume. Just shows how good they were as well.
As a kid - my neighborhood friends and I LOVED Jerry Lewis. We’d have a sleepover at one of the kids houses for the telethon. - could stay outside playing ball, or hide and seek until about 10:00pm. Parents let us stay up all night and gorging on great food. We’d have the TV on, played Monopoly and other board games, made brownies, overate and recuperated on Sunday. We had so much fun.
I wonder who had more fun doing this - Jerry or the band! Watching Butch Miles on drums reacting to Jerry or vice versa is definitely what’s driving this performance along! Aah - The good old days of music and entertainment with real professionals!
We were blessed to have Bob Hammer as our pianist at the Oxford Saloon in Snohomish Washington for about 5 years. Bob was the musical director for the JL telethon for a couple of years when he worked in Las Vegas. This is JL and just one of many amazing music/dance/humor pieces you can find on You Tube. Thanks for those memories Bob........and he's still upright and kicking in Chehalis Washington.
Is that James Robert Forrest Jr., on 1st tenor? Jimmy was tremendous talent on that sax and underappreciated by many; however, the Count knew the real story.
That is the wrong year. It has to be either 1973 or 1974. The band personnel was a bit different in 1980. For one thing the drummer should have been Duffy Jackson but there I am, Butch Miles, on camera. Great clip, wrong year.
I would've loved to have seen Jerry do Blues in Hoss' Flat with you guys live. I lived close to Basie in St. Albans back in the day. We used to stop & chat with Mrs. Basie on our way to church on Sundays.
Nothing like hearing it right from the source :) What a drummer, Butch! Love your drive, energy, kicking the Basie Band, what an amazing career. Cheers to you.
originally this cut was linked to the next guests. Ed McMahon read the tally board, then a vibraphone player was up next, then a British jazz duo. it's gone from RUclips
the greatest coolest jazz orchestra in history .. if u can't move or groove 2 the band it don't mean a thing! Gr8 2 see Freddie Green & the Count himself.
Great video. from Jerry, Basie and the Band.top professionals. One question. Who is the Trumpet player putting the snow on the roof towards the end. (high notes)
Chuck Barris “conducted” his band in the same way as they played for Gene, Gene, the Dancing Machine, though Jerry was paying a bit more attention to the score. Memorable music and entertainers.
Normally jazz band are self driving and don’t need a conductor but they just had so much more style that I don’t think couldn’t have happened without him
God bless Jerry Lewis and the legendary Count Basie and his Orchestra - and the great MDA Telethons! Truly great, then MDA really blew it and dishonored Mr. Lewis and the many who watched the annual Labor Day telethon!
Grande grande el sabía si misión una de las bellas hacer reír que es difícil pero lo hacía tan perfecto tan bien allá donde esté seguro tiene una sonrisa para el mundo aunque lloremos por dentro para ti cariño mío cuídate 😅
Man, you kill me on this - and on most every record I ever heard you play on. May I ask you - bass player I thought may have been John Heard, but then I saw him again and he actually looked like aaron Bell - is that possible? And was that Jimmy Forrest in the saxophones? Finally, and, once more - if I may, who is the fantastic high note trumpet screamer? I can't see the section. Thank you!!! WHAT A BAND!!!!!!!!!!!
ME ENCANTA, HERMOSO, CUANTA SINTONIA CON LA MÚSICA. ÍDOLO TOTAL!!!!!!☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆SIEMPRE Y POR SIEMPRE . RECUERDO INOLVIDABLE☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆MERCEDES DE REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Those were the days brings back wonderful memories.
This is the same tune that Count Basie & His Orchestra played in the movie BLAZING SADDLES out in the middle of a desert! LOVE IT!
What a rendition of Count Basie's "April in Paris"! Jerry certainly hit that one out of the park!
When music and comedy where still alive!
I remember most of our family would sit up almost all night watching Jerry Lewis Marathon always remember you Jerry Lewis

Man I miss the old Hollywood!!!
❤YEAH, JOE IS ALWAYS SLOW IN THOSE DEPARTMENTS JUST LIKE U C HERE JERRY AINT. REGINA ANN REALI, JD❤
That is hitting hard in 2024 Jerry Lewis and Count Basies Orchestra
Miss you madly Jerry. Thanking RUclips for the lovely memories.
His musical sense and physical comedy abilities went hand in hand. He was amazing!
Hear, hear!
@@Darrell1019 Ditto :) His particular kind of silliness really gets to me. I never got over Jerry and Dean breaking up. Tragic!
@@Darrell1019 thanks Darrell
Miss those days.
Jerry knew what he was doing!
Uh so where’s “1”, Jerry? A conductor he was not.

What can you say about such a beautiful & talented person. He's one reason I'd like to turn the clock back. What a selfless human being.
Ze Goncalves LoL, ask his children and grandchildren just how “selfless” he was.
I enjoyed his craziness. It made him a Star 🌟.
Missed my friend.
From Beverly Hills CA
Were Jerry Lewis and Count Basie friends? There's several Jerry Lewis movies that feature Basie's music.
Yeah he used count Basie many times in his movies and he was a big fan growing up. Obviously that was a memorable moment to conduct the count Basie band on live television
Just want to say I love Jerry Lewis and thanks for this clip! Jerry was at his best when he mixed his comedy with jazz.
Sadly we just lost Jerry Lewis. Here he is conducting Count Basie's big band. Such great energy!
One thing that is interesting to note. Is how much louder this more "modern" Basie band plays if you compare it to the older lineups of this band.
You can tell a good band by how quiet they can play
Well, note it wasn't just Basie's band playing. The Sax's and horns from Lou Brown's band were playing as well, adding to the volume. Just shows how good they were as well.
I can't stop smiling. God Bless Jerry Lewis and The Count. Thanks for the memories..
Same. I’m sitting here smiling.

He was a big part of my youth, I miss Jerry, R.I.P. big brother 😞
Flashbang83 Ask his sons if they miss him.....
Me, too...
I miss tou😔
I wonder who had more fun doing this - Jerry or the band! Watching Butch Miles on drums reacting to Jerry or vice versa is definitely what’s driving this performance along! Aah - The good old days of music and entertainment with real professionals!
"He" is NOT "directing" this orchestra. The musicians are professionals and don't need lewis swinging his arms around. They are just ignoring him.
We were blessed to have Bob Hammer as our pianist at the Oxford Saloon in Snohomish Washington for about 5 years. Jerry was the man.
"April In Paris". Note the "Jingle Bells" lockout at the end.
John Kleiner it was perfection...love the lockout
Miss the MDA telethon. School started this weekend. Also love Count Basie.
Jerry incomparable
We lived all this
Jerry Lewis is the most talented comedian of all time.
Yes in deed! Count Basey history
Miss you Mr. Lewis. That''s a real orchestra. Thanks
But a PHONY "director." Swinging your arms around in circles isn't "directing!"
F-O-R-E-V-E-R Jerry.
It's not Labor Day without that MDA Telethon. 🍁🍂🍁
ONE of KIND !!❤❤❤❤❤
Two Jersey boys showing how it's done.
A true moment in Lewis history blazing and heartfelt now cyrstlized in our hearts forevermore RIP Jerry
Wow well said . Did you nail it .!!
if only guys like basie and jerry were still around
Éste prodigio de hombre...todo lo hacía Fabolous..the great..Jerry..I'llremember you..love you⚘❤
Is that James Robert Forrest Jr., on 1st tenor? Jimmy was tremendous talent on that sax and underappreciated by many; however, the Count knew the real story.
Jimmy Forrest and Eric Dixon are the tenor players.
Mind blowing band😱🤯POWER!
that was a thrill, damn!
Top Notch World Class musicians all. Love the "Jingle Bells" ending 😊
Now that was music!
One of a kind, Jerry was. Grew up with his zany style of humor, which might explain a few things...
GENIUS
what an arrangement WOW maybe the best ever
Arranger: Bill Davis (yes, the organ player).
Imagine you conducting both Count Basie's and Lou Brown and the MDA orchestra at the same time?
Well, it's totally obvious that lewis doesn't know HOW to "conduct" an orchestra! Swinging your arms around in circles is NOT CONDUCTING!!
The Battle of the Banda, Jerry Lewis Telethon Band against Count Basie Band. Wow this make a standing ovation
I mean Big Bands Battle
Amen to that.
Can't get enough of this!❤
RIP Brother Jerry !
I miss Jerry. A man of many talents! RIP, our dear Fella.

Jamaicafunk thanks for your letter. Catherine was quite a lady wasn't she.
Nothing like hearing it right from the source :) What a drummer, Butch! Love your drive, energy, kicking the Basie Band, what an amazing career. Cheers to you.
Wasn't Greg Fields Count Basie's drummer in 1980? I thought Duffy was his drummer later.
I had the privilege of hearing you play with the Count when I was in high school.
originally this cut was linked to the next guests. Ed McMahon read the tally board, then a vibraphone player was up next, then a British jazz duo. it's gone from RUclips
ONE MORE TIME.... ONE MORE ONCE !!!!
Amo Jerry Lewis, ele é imortal!Genial!Insubstituivel, nunca outro igual!
Best part of Lewis' movies was Basie's music and Mr. Joe Williams' (Cindefella) voice. 😄👍
Never mind Jerry. What an orchestra!!

I was going to say the same thing 1977 is the year of the clip
A great live rendition of their classic from way back. Thanks for posting.
He did this in front of the count too!
Great video. from Jerry, Basie and the Band.top professionals. One question. Who is the Trumpet player putting the snow on the roof towards the end. (high notes)
Franklin "Lin" Biviano
Chuck Barris “conducted” his band in the same way as they played for Gene, Gene, the Dancing Machine, though Jerry was paying a bit more attention to the score. Memorable music and entertainers.
Love!!!!!!
Lewis could do it all!
Normally jazz band are self driving and don’t need a conductor but they just had so much more style that I don’t think couldn’t have happened without him
They didn't need him swinging his arms around in circles pretending to "lead" them. Professional musicians, but a complete loser trying to "direct."
God bless Jerry Lewis and the legendary Count Basie and his Orchestra - and the great MDA Telethons! Truly great, then MDA really blew it and dishonored Mr. Lewis and the many who watched the annual Labor Day telethon!
Grande grande el sabía si misión una de las bellas hacer reír que es difícil pero lo hacía tan perfecto tan bien allá donde esté seguro tiene una sonrisa para el mundo aunque lloremos por dentro para ti cariño mío cuídate 😅
Great actor! The talent in the first place.😂😃😇👍🙋
RIP Jerry.
Also, RIP Count Basie and any of those far out musicians in the band that are deceased since '77. No one swung as hard as the Count and His Orch.!

Love it 😀
TALENT is the very description of Jerry Lewis 👌 👏 🙌
A no talent jerk.
Real entertainment!
Cara era um gênio não precisa nem de batuta
He had a lot of passion for comedy, good music, and he enjoyed every moment.
He could barely "sing" and he damm sure couldn't "direct" an orchestra.
Wow! I had no idea!
RIP JERRY ALSO MY LATE MOTHER NEW YOU ON MIAMI BEACH.
Can you upload Rachael lampa (2001)
Please? 👍😃
