In 1978 Mike Caldwell on the LAST DAY of the season I was waiting outside Milwaukee County Stadium for autographs. Yes back then the players walked out and signed autos for kids and adults. There was a rush over by another player, but I was a lefty WANNA-BE pitcher....lol and Mike Caldwell WAS A FOR REAL lefty pitcher. Had Ron Guidry of the Yankees not had a DOMINATING 25-3 season with a 1.74 ERA Mike Caldwell may have won the Cy Young Award that year. He was 22-9 with a 2.36 ERA. He had 23 COMPLETE GAMES...YEAH 23. A total of 293.1 innings pitched. 258 hits, 54 BB's, and 131 K's. A WHIP of 1.06. 37 Games appeared and 34 Games started, and again 23 Complete Games. ANYWAY, sorry, I saw him walking out and as I said everyone else was occupied with another player. I walked up and I was about to YELL, HEY DAD IT'S MIKE....he gave me a Shhh sign and smiled. He said he needed to catch a plane. I agreed, heck he was willing to sign my yearbook so I obliged. We talked for a bit as he threw his duffle bag into his trunk. Then he signed my book, as I told him I was an aspiring pitcher. What happened NEXT BLEW MY MIND. He THANKED me for not blowing the whistle on him...lol, and said a pitcher needs a cap and reached in his bag and put his home cap on my head. I damn near fainted. My IDOL handed me his season cap. He was superstitious and didn't swap caps, especially having a 22-9 year. He shook my hand and left. I RAN to my Mom and Dad at the car and showed them. My Mom grabbed it at the behest of my Dad and put it in the car. I WANTED to WEAR IT!! But as my Dad said, so did a LOT of other kids, especially when it was known it was game worn. So I gave in. This ONE EVENT CEMENTED my love for Baseball as my #1 Sport. The NFL is a close #2, VERY CLOSE, but Baseball is it. From 1977-1984 I got many Autographs, and met many AMAZING players. I also met some A-holes sadly. Many were on the Visiting teams which I get. Hell they got booed and heckled by us so screw us...lol. The Yankees were the worst. Billy Martin, and Reggie Jackson were DICKS. But in their "defense" Jackson and Caldwell had a brawl, Nettles and Gantner(I think) also had a mix up. So in the 78-80 season we were RIVALS BIG TIME, but again I met a plethora of AWESOME Brewers. Some kids hotwired our car and had a joy ride. The sheriff's dept. took my Dad around the lot and searched for it. Meanwhile I there were 3 guys who OFFERED to hang out with me. This was 2-3 hours AFTER the end of the game. 98% of the players had left. I was one of maybe 3 people still there as well. But Billy Travers, Lary Sorensen, and Jimmy Gantner. They were actually grilling out by an RV. Tailgating...lol, after the game. We played catch as I ALWAYS brought a glove. Aside from pitching I also played 2nd base. I was the first lefty 2nd baseman for our team, EVER. B.Travers and Lary Sorensen were pitchers. Billy Travers was another lefty. His advice to me was simply this....NEVER EVER THROW A CURVEBALL until your arm AND muscles develop. I asked him to show me how to throw a sweeping curve. Again he said KIDS my age when they throw a hard snapping curve, can really mess up your rotator cuff bad. So wait until your in High School or BETTER YET COLLEGE. It didn't matter, I sucked as a pitcher...lol, but I was a GREAT 2nd baseman. But MOMENTS like this, and a couple others made baseball and MLB games a CHERISHED MEMORY. I was able to see Nolan Ryan pitch. Jim Rice, Fred Lynn, George Brett, Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, and so many other HOF'ers. LATER ON I was PRIVILEGED to see Robin Yount smack his 3,000th career hit. It was EPIC. Milwaukee County Stadium was ROARING. A standing ovation I STILL get goosebumps remembering it. Growing up was HARD as it is for kids. But alcoholism and co-dependency caused life to be VERY PAINFUL AT TIMES. These games were my ESCAPE. MY REFUGE. MY SAFEZONE AND MY HAPPY PLACE. One more reason Baseball IS my FAVORITE GAME. SORRY for the long post. I recently found out I have a terminal illness that acts slowly at first but, can escalate. My Mom had it and I took care of her for 10+yrs so I know what's coming and it sucks. I just wanted to tell some fellow fans some ancient history on autographs and player's back then. Now that kind of thing would NEVER EVER HAPPEN. My friends were skeptical as well until they saw the pictures of me playing catch with Jim Gantner, Billy Travers, and Lary Sorensen. I think the Nike swoosh works when it falls in line with the color used on the front. That's why it doesn't really work on the Orioles uniform, for example
Nike didn’t unilaterally decide to put their logo on the chest. They put it there because MLB decided to sell that space for the maker’s mark at a higher price, and Nike was willing to pay that higher price for added exposure.
Dont forget, the Yankees jersey has the pinstripes continued everywhere while all other pinstripe jerseys have the the pinstripes stop at the mesh panels on the sides and back.
Why didn’t they just put the Nike swoosh on the sleeve or on the center of the back right under the collar. It is way too close on some of stitching in the jerseys and screws up some of the classic jerseys.
One change you missed on the Yankees jersey is the change of stripes on the shoulder to run horizontally. They used to be all continuous vertical striping.
I'm a Nike guy since forever. I don't wear other brands. With that said, I believe the Nike logo should have gone on the sleeve. I don't care if they even made it larger on the sleeve, I just am not a fan of it on the jersey like it is. I hope in 2021, they change it.
The best thing about the Yankees jersey was something you didn't mention. All the other pinstripe jerseys have this white side panel on the lower half of the jersey (see 3:40, 5:55, 7:04, 7:30, 9:20, and 10:43 for the other pinstripe jerseys), but not the Yankees. I'm sure that panel exists on all the regular white jerseys, but the Yankees must've pulled some strings to not have it.

I found with the rebranded jersey's with the Nike stitched on the authentic's aren't as bad or busy looking once the players tuck it in.
