    Thank you for a detailed review of Disney Land’s railroad and all the history related to same. Congratulations 🎊🍾🎉🎈 on four years of Toy Man Television, and to many more years to come. It seems like yesterday I saw your pilot episode, and I really felt sorry for your forced retirement, but as you have said before, it’s the best thing to happen to you as you then met Karyn. I look forward to what you have planned for 2018, and it’s never boring.

      It was the best thing to happen to me as well... My life had been flipped upside down as well.. and I knew that I had to make some significant changes... as the ship which I had been cruising on, had developed a serious leak! LOL!
      We all know that feeling... Right?
      I met Dale, just at the right time... Of course, he was still caring for his mom.. And I was at the end of dealing with my parents estate... Timing was perfect, really. And the rest goes down in Toy Man History!!

    Walt Disney is/was one of those people in American history that has done so much for "us". I'm almost 60 and when I watch this I find myself drifting back in time to the yearly trips that my Mom and Dad made sure we took. Dad was a train buff and was content to sit on a bench in the New Orleans station while us kids roamed the park trying hard to use our tickets on the best rides. Thanks for the memories!

      I too can spend the day at New Orleans station watching the trains come and go. HAve done several times. Relaxing way to spend the day.

    #4, The Ernest S. Marsh, was the first locomotive that was owned and ran by Pine Creek Railroad in New Jersey. I used to volunteer there as train crew and mechanical when I was just a wee lad. They will tell you it came from a logging company in New England, but it came from a sand pit in Raritan, NJ. It used to be a saddle tank, the original tank is still on Pine Creek property!

    The wife and I are huge Disney nuts. What a wonderful piece about Walt and the "back story" of his passion for things railroad. I think it would be safe to say you covered the story in great depth. I am sure it wouldn't be a surprise when I say the railroad is the first thing we do when we visit Disneyland, CA. The Bride and I must mount-up a trip very soon.. This series has all the promise of some really interesting stories. Happy New Year and congratulations on four years. Greg and Jeanne.

    Really enjoyed this video. And I’m from Santa Margarita and I’d always love hearing the steam whistles in the summer time. Would always know when they were running. I have a buddy that used to run the engines with his dad and they would let us ride up front in the engines with them. I remember the days when they used to be stored in that barn there, way before the track was laid. Thank you for bringing up some good old memories!!!

    Love the videos! I love hearing stories about Walt and his trains. I noticed that you said Walt's Carrolwood Pacific train is long gone. Actually, there are two of the original cars from Walt's backyard Carrolwood Pacific on display at Disneys Wilderness Lodge Resort in Disney World. They are located in the Vacation Club Villas section of the resort in a room called the Carolwood Room, and there are all kinds of pictures of Walt with his trains. It's an amazing hidden gem for the Disney Train enthusiast! Love the Disney videos! Keep them coming!

    Growing up in Orange County, CA, I went to Disneyland many times. My good friend and I often rode in the upper seats of the caboose during the peak times of the day during the summer, to escape the crowds for awhile and strategize what we were going to do next. We'd ride around and around several times, often getting off at the "Grizzly Flats" station to get a Mint Julep at that little stand in New Orleans Square. The vantage point from the upper seats wasn't so great during the Grand Canyon Diorama, as it was too high-- you could see down to the floor in the exhibit and the speakers were right at window level, but it was a fun place to hang out and cool your heels anyhow, and particularly back in the days of the ticket books where once you got on the train, you could ride around as long as you wanted without spending another ticket.

    Toy Man Television - I've been to Greenfield Village in Dearborn MI, several times as a kid growing with my parents and always found it fascinating!! A few years ago Raymond and I were planning to visit, he'd never been, and we noticed the website made mention of a special opening after dark just before Christmas. We made the trip and it was FABULOUS!! The houses were open and decorated in period decorations, as near as safety permitted, and a few that have functional kitchens were busy at work making treats for the people visiting the warming stations located thru out the park to enjoy. Just something for you two lovers of screwing around to keep in mind for a future adventure, LOL!!
    Every time we visit WDW and enter the Magic Kingdom, the first thing that happens is my adult attorney husband turns into a kid, Pixie Dust I guess, AND we have to ride the Steam Train around twice, Mary Poppins' Carousel and The People Mover FIRST! He also found if when commuting the parks on the Monorail and arrive early enough at a station and are very nice to the operator and there's room, you can ride in the cab with the engineer. It's pretty cool!
    WDW offers several extra cost tours in the parks but I'm not sure if there's one for the railroad. THANK YOU for the video, very well done and very informative!!

    I just came across this video and it was remarkable! As along time Disneyland fan (my first time was at age 2 in 1959), annual passholder and in general a Disney enthusiast I have to say what you put together was worthy of a documentary done by Disney themselves! I learned things I never knew, like Ward Kimball’s involvement with the Golden Spike engines. I’ve driven by Santa Margarita Ranch many times on our way up to the Bay Area (where I’m originally from) and never knew about their Disney train connection. Coincidentally we live in Rancho Santa Margarita in Orange County (no connection) and normally go to Disneyland once every week or two (let’s hope they reopen soon!) I’ve also been to the Orange Empire RR in Lake Paris area and years ago met Ward Kimball at a car show. Anyway, I’m looking forward to watching your other Walking with Walt videos! I took one of those tours myself years ago but it did not include the railroad house. Great stuff, nothing better than Disney and get up to the Disney Family Museum in San Francisco if you haven’t been.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 года назад

      Ken Goldenberg Hi yes they never open the shops in Anaheim. Or should I say almost never. In this particular case they opened it up to the national model railroad Association because someone knew someone and we were able to get in. It took us a month to complete security checks. By contrast the shops in Florida, well they give tours of those! I’m not sure why they are so much more nervous about Anaheim however what they really seem to be concerned about is the fireworks equipment which are right there by the engine shops. And rather than security or anything they seem to be very very afraid of someone stealing their proprietary canon design.

    I am native to Minnesota, but did my 6th grade year in the San Diego area. I went to Disneyland a few times and loved it. I rode the steam train and the monorail. I was saddened when Walt Disney died, and was disappointed with some of the decisions that the corporate people made. I'm back in Minnesota, but Disneyland carries on.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 года назад +1

      We will carry-on as soon as they re-opened it! Yes I think Walt really had a vision and it died with him. Sad to say. Did you walk around the park it’s just not that hard to figure out what was made before waltz death and what was made after words

    • @bcgrittner
      @bcgrittner 4 года назад +2

      @@ToyManTelevision For example, the submarine ride was discontinued, but due to public outcry, the submarines were brought back. Some of the principles of the corporation would make television appearances and literally brag about how wonderful their ideas were. All they were doing was blatant cost-cutting at the expense of the overall quality of Disneyland itself. I may get back someday, but I miss the configuration that Walt designed and executed back in 1955. If you can, view the opening ceremony that aired lived on tv with hosts Art Linkletter, Bob Cummings, and Ronald Reagan. There were a few glitches, but overall was well done. At the 50th anniversary those three appeared again. About 1960 I also recall Disneyland being featured in National Geographic magazine. Keep submitting your videos - they are most enjoyable.

    Another great video! You guys do a wonderful job really enjoy your podcast.
    I have taken the tour at Disney World in Orlando, “Behind the Train Magic”. On that tour they told us the story about Walt’s live stream engine derailing and tipping over. A young girl walk by it not able to see the steam, and was burnt. They said Walt put the railroad up after that and after that’s when he approached the city and wanted to put the train around a park with a carousel. We were told that the city of Burbank did not want a carousel because it played carnival style music. And carnival people were thought of as lowlifes at the time, and they wanted no part of that. So that’s when Walt went looking for land to put a carousel and a train to go around the park. Just thought I would share what I remember. .

    Hello great video.
    A couple factoids you missed or I missed:
    The involvement of the Santa Fe Railroad with Walt wasn't mentioned.
    They operate with the same type Block Signal system as the big railroads use.
    The first time I road with the Headend Crew we were rounding the curve coming towards the Storybook Land platform when the engineer pulled the Johnson bar straight up, shoved the throttle forward and hit the brakes well before getting to the station. I asked what was going on. The engineer said there was someone on the platform in a place where they "shouldn't be" so they are taught to stop the train immediately until Security can clear the situation. In this case it was someone in a wheelchair had been pushed up the wrong side of the ramp.
    Some years later we got to ride with the Headend Crew again, pulled out of the Main Street Station, stopped at New Orleans Square where the fireman (a lady) and engineer got off and went into the building to the West of the station, two men came out and took over the train.
    They explained they were the "relief crew" and besides having to make the coffee for the Cast, they had to make 4 or 5 trips around the Park, before they changed costumes and would go over to the Mark Twain to relieve the Steam crew there for their breaktime.
    They went on to explain the Steam Operators are the highest paid Cast members due to the responsibilities involved.
    They also said when they first started at the Park you got 3 days of Training on the Steam Trains, made a couple trips around the park and were on your own after that.
    They went onto state there now is an official minimum 30 day training program in place, and they were the Trainers!
    That visit we got to dine in Club 33 a once in a lifetime event for many people!
    We also got a ride in the Lille Belle, you got a ticket which was validated by a Cast member escorting the passengers (about 10-15 maximum) around the Park, I noticed items were siliconed to tabletops etc. The Escort said they used to let people ride around without escort but too many things were disappearing, so only Escorted rides now.
    I "heard" later the Lillie Belle is only used for VIPs now. Trivia: I have the exact same marble topped "Telephone table, except the legs on mine haven't been shortened to big it to 5/8 scale! Note to anyone there is NO air conditioning in the Lillie Belle and it doesn't travel very fast so on ahot July day be prepared to be sweating alot by the time you complete the trip!
    There is a Website and Forum dedicated to the Disneyland Railroad.

    I rode on the original passenger cars in 1955. The later ones were not the real thing. I saw Walt a few times. A whole new world now. We fooled around a lot whích we prefer to say. My Grandfather knew Walt quite well and helped out with some of the things that Walt wanted to do before he built disneyland in the early 1930s with a toy company my Grandfather owned.

    Great video as always. BTW, next time you go to the railroad museum in Perris, you might get to see the Emma Nevada running again. I've been told by one of the members that they are planning to get the locomotive back in operation, though he did say that it will take a few years to return the locomotive to service.

    Snow White's Castle, as well as buildings on Main Street use forced perspective, which I thought was cool.
    Loco #3 has a "combination" coupler (I don't know the actual name) on the front. It's a standard (narrow gauge sized) knuckle coupler, but it also has a gap in the knuckle that would probably work with a link-&-pin system which was used on the plantation railroads because of it's simplicity. Also, knuckle couplers can uncouple on rough, uneven track like would be found in the cane and cotton fields.
    The excursion cars have the trolley-style seats with the flip-over backrests.

    • @royreynolds108
      @royreynolds108 7 лет назад +2

      The "narrow gauge sized" knuckle coupler is actually a 3/4 sized coupler. The gaped knuckle is not that unusual on lumber and industrial railroads. The Huckleberry RR had them when I worked there. The knuckle has a hole which a pin is dropped to allow for a coupling bar in the gap.

      The excursion cars look exactly like the Greenfield cars. But its a common design. These replaced the coach cars when the new trains were being built. As they were also adding the Grand Canyon, the Holiday worked better as they were side facing. The excursion cars are the only front facing cars ion the line.

    • @LosAngelist
      @LosAngelist 7 лет назад

      Yeah that's the only downside with OERM - how hard it is to get there on weekends! Actually one of the main reasons I started YouTubing in the first place was to lobby Metrolink to run trains at least hourly from Union Station to the downtown Perris station near OERM on the weekends, because I thought it was just the silliest thing that one needed a CAR to enjoy to the best TRAIN museum. And since my 'call the government and make them fix up the trains' video actually worked, by 2028 you'll be able to do exactly that! ( ruclips.net/video/6GREsCzoCkk/видео.html )

    For those who love this vid like me there is a book about the railroad and bits of the parks itself the book is "Walt Disneys railroad Story" I encourage those who love Walt and trains to read this book because it goes in depth about the trains and their names (if you plan on working in the railyard at Disneyland you probably want to know the names and how to identify them other than the number)
