I purchased this record by complete accident. I asked the guy at the record store if he had any new Styx and he handed me this on cd. I went home only to read the date on the label. It was pre-Shaw! WTF! After listening to it, it quickly became one of my favorite Styx albums. It must have been new on cd back then. A fortunate mistake. Thanks record store guy!!
I can one up that one. I dreamt a very wild dream that involved me taking something very important to another place in a war zone. Said something was hidden inside a book called "the golden lark", and basically that title is the only thing that I remember. Next morning I was a new Styx fan and this my favorite song of them
This entire "early" Styx is simply fantastic! It really showcases their creativity and rock roots! Been listening to this for 30 years+! Share it with others. If I were voting on the greatest American band, I would vote Styx for their longevity, creativity, their sheer number of really, really great songs and albums, and consistency. I would give them first place over the Eagles and Boston.
Actually, this is my favorite STYX album. I Love the thunderstorm rain effects. Evil Eys reminds me of my Vamipella picture stetch that I did. This album reminds me of Michigan/Chicago...great places to live♥ Pre-Shaw, no problem.
This song was playing on my car stereo as the hospital staff transferred my deceased mother into an ambulance to go to the funeral home. I listen to it every 10 years or so. Beautiful song.
Another great one penned by DDY. When you look at the actual composers on most Styx albums, the best songs were composed by DDY or he was included with JY or TS. Yes, of course there are some awesome songs done exclusively by TS and JY but when I go through each album and look at who composed the songs, usually the most memorable and truly "Styx sounding" songs have Dennis as one of the composers. I really like the new lineup with Gowan but Styx will never sound as good without Deyoung's vocals and creativity. Dude is a genius.
Well said. Clearly JY and TS have no intention of reuniting with DDY, which is their prerogative. DDY has a terrific band and still has the pipes to put on a great show. Gowan is talented but not even in the same realm as DDY.
@@Buff99ca i've been a huge styx fan for 30+ years and i must say, As great ass DDY was, gowan is litteraly the best replacement they could of chose. seen them live a couple times and they blew my mind. i would almost put him in the same realm. although he really can't beat dennis.. he comes close.. really close.
Saaaame. Don’t get me wrong, I fuck with Gowan and the new line up, they’re great. And Gowan does a great job filling in Dennis shoes but at the end of the day, Dennis is just irreplaceable. Wish I was alive back then to see them in their hey day with the classic line up.
I know most Styx fans dismiss this album (along with the other pre-Shaw Styx), but I really like this album. I think it has quite a few gems like Man of Miracles, Golden Lark, Song for Suzanne and Evil Eyes.
I first started listening to Styx back in 1978 when Pieces of Eight had just come out and that was because of my older brother told me he wanted me to listen to something and it was the Pieces of eight album our oldest brother had bought and we snuck into his room and was listening to it. Later on I found his older albums and this was one of them and I loved the songs on it to . I love the songs and albums that are pre-Shaw a heck of a lot more. Not saying he is bad but the sound of Styx was much more crisp and the songs seem to have more feeling put into them. The Styx of today is not Styx at all.
There were several bands that started out progressive and ended up have to "go popular" because of the producers or record companies. Styx, Ambrosia, and Journey come to mind.
Although I Love Pieces Of Eight pre tommy Shaw albums were the best STYX i've ever heard. The harmonies were just better! Equinox was their best album!
This is such a sad but beautiful song and I like the way "Golden Lark" seamlessly blends in with the intro to "Song For Suzanne." It's like musical poetry. And it's strange how the voice in the first few lines sounds a lot like Tommy Shaw (well, his style anyway). It definitely does not sound like Dennis until the first verse.
For those of you who liked this album, check out the song "Unfinished Song" by Dennis. It was a song that was not put on Man of Miracles because he didn't feel the song fit the theme of the album. It can be found right here on RUclips and it's a pretty good song.
Man of Miracles was one of their heaviest albums so it didn't really fit. They put the song on the Styx II album for the Wooden Nickel years CD, where it fit much better.
A song for Suzanne reminds me of Tony Bennet's classic "Once upon a time". A song that probably convinced Frank Sinatra that Tony bennet was the greatest singer that ever lived.
la la la la la la la la la la la la la one day you're up and the next day you're down and all your dreams pass you by you sit in your room with your face in a frown waiting for her last goodbye and all of the wishing wells and stars in the sky won't make her stay any more and all of the plans you've made will soon wash to sea like a lark who can't sing any more once in awhile you remember her laugh for she could make you feel strong 'twas then that you thought your love always would last but now it seems you were wrong and all of the wishing wells and stars in the sky won't make her stay anymore and all of the plans you've made will soon wash to sea like a lark who can't sing any more golden lark won't you sing any more golden lark keeps her heart riding on the wind she's a mystery like a gypsy hides her love within golden lark keeps her heart riding on the wind she's a mystery like a gypsy hides her love within la la la la la la la la

O M G This is awesome - This is amazing and beautiful - I have to buy a copy. Is that a real cello I hear, or is it synth? Withe rwa, WOW! Thank you for the upload!

He did you right
He purposely did I bet

Do you still smoke meth,I mean
Kansas would be a close second for me!
DDY should do these songs live now! They're gems!

But Gowan didn't write any of those classics , his phrasing is a little off on the melodies also , plus Dennis is a keyboard virtuoso

DDY actually agreees with you about Serpent, but it did give us Plexiglas Toilet.
Most fans probably don't know that Shaw didn't play on Lady, Suite Madam Blue, Loralei, Lights Up that are concert favorites to this day.
Diostillrocks shaw doesn't join the band until crystal ball.
AndyGuitar Totally agree, I have this on vinyl.
Absolutely stunning shame Dennis de young says these albums are not great
This track is stunning
Beautiful music. Thanks for sharing
Man of miracles is the best wooden nickle album. The guitars sound much better than serpent.
Complexity and tension in music. No Millennial Whoop.
Am a huge fan of its been 30 years last time I heard this it’s still one of the best
Is this about kings or larks that sing hymns at heavens door? Oh sweet love, scorn only to change thy state. The Wiz is a wow.

Kansas
Beautiful! I am GROOVING on this one 💖
How do we start a request for a Wooden Nickel Tour?
Although I Love Pieces Of Eight pre tommy Shaw albums were the best STYX i've ever heard. The harmonies were just better! Equinox was their best album!
we played the part of lovers on that summer night!!!! hello
They were definitly prog rock in their early days.
This is so cool!! I love music.
Under rated
Definitely underatted band new album is also excellent

Very cool to see Beauty enjoy such unbelievable music. TY

I have this Styx album on vinyl LP.
Golden lark is the best reference song for keyboarding my music. Song For Suzanne is acoustically sound.
love this song, thanks for posting...
Man of Miracle BELLE album hommage à Dieu tout puissant bravo Donald Parent Quebec fan de Sryx
Superb song and album band this album is really good I think
I love that cello at 3:45:

la la la la la
one day you're up
and the next day you're down
and all your dreams
pass you by
you sit in your room
with your face in a frown
waiting for her
last goodbye
and all of the wishing wells
and stars in the sky
won't make her stay any more
and all of the plans you've made
will soon wash to sea
like a lark who can't sing any more
once in awhile you remember her laugh
for she could make you feel strong
'twas then that you thought your love always would last
but now it seems you were wrong
and all of the wishing wells
and stars in the sky
won't make her stay anymore
and all of the plans you've made
will soon wash to sea
like a lark who can't sing any more
golden lark won't you sing any more
golden lark
keeps her heart
riding on the wind
she's a mystery
like a gypsy
hides her love within
golden lark
keeps her heart
riding on the wind
she's a mystery
like a gypsy
hides her love within

I'm just a man
please let me
sing my song
it's been ten years
since I met you
and I first held your hand
my Suzanne
that summer night
we dreamed of
days to come
I held you there
beside me
we carved the wishing tree
and then
we played the part of lovers
on that summer night
we played the part of lovers
you gave all your love and you made it seem right
you made me a man oh so young in my life
one simple verse
like the words in a play
you spoke your lines
and I knew I must stay
oh I must stay
Kansas x uriah heep = styx impressionante
Love this album to death!!! 5 Stars *****
Oh.........man!!!!! What more can be said.
