Thanks everyone for writing down what I was screaming at the screen throughout the video. Oh, missed one: liquid air and propellant are non-conductive. Apart from the low temperature it won't hurt your mainboard.
I have a custom laptop and I had an issue with the CPU fan where it made a grinding noise and had shit airflow. Bad enough to the point where I had to use a shortcut to set both the CPU and gpu fans to 100%. Had to order one from the manufacturer. Mercifully it was fairly inexpensive and easy to swap out. Just a couple of screws.
I know it's an old video but I remember around 2008 we did a "overhaul" program on our companies fleet of HP nc6100 (or was it nx6100) notebooks. Upgrade 512 MB RAM to 2 GB, replace hard drive with an SSD and dust everything off. It was a huge success. People felt like receiving a new computer, they thanked us for giving them the computer they're used to but now working as good as a new one.
Dust becomes lodged between the fins of the heatsink and the fan itself, it can completely block the fan outlet sometimes causing issues. Only way to get to it is to remove the fan and clean the heatsink manually. Also changing out the thermal paste every couple years is a good idea too.
Hold down the fans to get a better result. Pick out that dust bunny from the corner of the heat pipe. Don't be so afraid of touching the internals with plastic instruments like the straw and some plastic tweezers (or even your fingernails as long as you're careful). Man... You could have done such a better job.
when using the compressed air on the fans you shouldn´t let them spin, so you can clean them better and avoid any issues that may cause the bearings to go bad by overspining. You should take out the fans for a proper clean because the dust seemed pretty dense and you should do a repaste on the CPU/GPU to improve the temperatures.
I can't believe I was trying to figure out what was happening to my dad's 2013 MacBook Pro with the fan and this video by the one and only KRAZY KEN pops up in my RUclips home. Thanks so much! And please share your thought on the nano-texture iMac
I've also got a 2013 MacBook Pro (13") and it has the film peeling off the screen too! Freaking hate it, but there's nothing I can do about it now that the warranty is gone... At least the fans are still fine. I also use smcFanControl and have been since 2014, except I don't have password prompts on it all the time for some reason.
Just a tip. it is best practice to always unplug the fan prior to using compressed air because the fan acts as a generator when spun from external forces and the reverse current flow can damage some systems.
I did hear someone mention that before. That’s really fascinating. However..............the procedure to unplug the fan was way too many steps. I didn’t see it worth it. But that’s cool to know.
99% of the time you are right. It doesn't generate enough to matter, but it's just best practice. because they always generate some power, that is how motors work and people have killed motherboards before. It doesn't take much effort to unplug or jam your fan and to assure the safety of hardware I would consider the effort worth it.
I'll make sure to do this if my MacBook Pro fan ever starts making odd noises. Too bad Apple products are so non-repairable now, or people would do this every few months, and this problem would never arise.
10:58 This is how i am when i am trying to fix my sister's gadgets everytime. I also fixed lots of laptop and desktop computer. I am afraid of my sister. I check many times on the internet before doing something when it comes to my sister. You said that "If this was someone's laptop" Well, it is opposite on me. I felt like "at home" with your video. So natural and it is very hard to find people like you on the RUclips. Thank you.
Ken, the reason your fan on the right is more dusty is it's your CPU/IGPU fan. The other side is your DGPU fan which is not always active. Most applications not doing anything graphically intensive like Google chrome for example, use the Intel gpu. Where as your editing software uses the discrete (Nvidia I think) GPU
Remove the radiator and clean it full properly from dust , also change the thermal paste. Thermal paste dont must be from apple store :) From other store should be compatible too , and make your little macbook work nice and silent :D
My macbook is about the same age (2013 MacBook Pro w/ Retina Display) and I had the same issue. Turns out, one of the little fins broke off though so once I took that apart and got that out, it's been completely quiet ever since. Gave mine a good thorough dusting too so, hopefully, it will last another 5+ years.
Just opened up my Late 2008 MBP and man was it dusty, am going to replace the thermal paste, use compressed air and a brush and completely blitz it out inside!
When is the next episode of vintage vault? If it is next week that would be great because I think next week is when my iMac g4 turns 15 years old from the factory if it is an episode on the g4 that would be amazing.
I gotta say, having to enter passwords very frequently is something I don't like about UNIX. I greatly prefer Windows's complete lack of passwords if requested, and UAC is better than having to type secure passwords commonly... Also, good thing your fan's just buzzing and not screeching; My laptop and an older desktop did that once and it's a startling and scary sound to hear coming from a fan.
I actually just did this today, except I removed the fan cap, and there actually wasn’t much dust in it for 5 years old... but mine crackles instead of buzzing, and de-dusting didn’t fix it.
The reason the other fan slot had less dust is because that is your gpu fan, it dosent spin unless an application is using the dgpu, which isnt often so thats why there is less dust.
I've replaced 1 fan on my 09 MBP when it started rattling (not a buzz. When the bearings actually go, it will sound much worse than this.) And now the other fan is rattling, but it doesn't make too much noise at low RPMs so I'm not going to replace it for a long time. Maybe ever.
i kept getting that sound but it wasnt that loud bc i always wear headphones but today randomly it became extremely loud and it scared me so i turned off my computer and it was good again
i just order the little screwdrivers but I need a can of compressed air. hopefully it works for me too and my macbook pro is only 1 year old!~ thanks krazy ken!
Laptop fans decrease after ~5 years, my asus k53sc & compaq presario cq57 (both from 2012) got the same problem. The asus in the begin of 2018 & the compaq in the middle of 2017... I oiled the fans and both are still working without much noise ;D
"Compressed air" is not really air, it's some sort of gas. Propane or something similar. They used to put Freon but thankfully not anymore. There's not much issue if the liquid gets on the electronics, it will evaporate within a second. Touching the motherboard with plastic stuff is also fine. If you just ground yourself with a wire, the chance of burning something with static electricity is also negligible, so you can touch the mb freely. I guess if it worked it's fine though.
I had my Lenovo computer fan make the same noise, it was a combination of hairs making contact with the fan blades (the joys of having cats) and the fan being a little loose on the bearing. Been a month now and the noise has not returned
My 4 year old pulled my 16" Mac Book Pro off the kitchen table a few months ago. Miraculously, there was no visible damage.. Computer was closed and landed face down on the wood floor... 3 1/2 ft drop .. 4 ft drop. the laptop seems to work fine. However, I noticed the buzzing from my left side.. Very similar situation. Anyone have any advice?
I thought the Video was out of focus until I noticed that RUclips decided that my 5ghz 30mbit download while I am right next to the router isnt enough for HD.

my mac OSX Ver. 10.6.8 4 GB is so old and right side fan making noise so loud ! I took it apart. So many tiny screws. I stuck them on a magnet to avoid loss. Removed battery first. Two really tiny screws on a right angle. But I got them out. Finally inside and not that bad for an old timer mac. Sprayed some silicon on fans. Screwed it all back together. NO GOOD . You gotta remove the fans to give it a proper cleaning, oh well, I'm sure the issue will come back in a while and you'll have to clean it properly and/or replace the fan.
If you don't have compressed air on hand, you can get away with using a hair dryer on the lowest setting. This works a lot better than compressed air when you're dealing with a mountain of dust

The only thing accurate about this video is the fact that he actually needed to fix the dust issue. He clearly has no idea about ambient temperatures and evaporation, the little bit of moisture that is seen coming from compressed air wouldnt damage your components as it will evaporate before it has time to damage anything.
I’ve also stated numerous times (verbally and in writing) that this is NOT an educational video, and I’m not versed in hardware repair. Seriously. That concept shouldn’t be too mind boggling.

Computer Clan is it ironic that i am watching this on a iphone 5s with ghost touch or not
1. What’s ghost touch?
2. How would that be ironic?
Had those two things clicked since the very beginning.
Did your warranty get voided? BTW happy birthday
It expired a looooong time ago.
And thank you.
you need to hold the fan down. by letting it spin freely you're drastically decreasing the effective pressure on the dust particles
not to mention putting extra wear on the bearings
Also you should remove the fan covers, there's tons of shit inside, especially in the cooler fins.
And its worth it to repaste the CPU/GPU while in there.
the fan could also act as a dynamo and damage circuits...
Thanks everyone for writing down what I was screaming at the screen throughout the video. Oh, missed one: liquid air and propellant are non-conductive. Apart from the low temperature it won't hurt your mainboard.

YES. Genius.
Too bad if they even generate any power it's such a small amount that it doesn't even matter.
This myth never gets old lmao
99% of the time you are right. It doesn't generate enough to matter, but it's just best practice. because they always generate some power, that is how motors work and people have killed motherboards before. I'm guessing it's something stuck in the fan, i had the same problem with my current laptop
also i haven't watched it yet
My mom's MacBook Pro (late 2011 I believe) is running good still. She's had it for over 5 years, it's running slow but it still works.
Happened to me all I had to do was reset the VRAM or something like that. One of those restart/hold down key combo thing.
The refrigerant in those cans is NOT going to harm your computer. That said you don't want to spray the liquid out and waste it, so carry on.
I'll make sure to do this if my MacBook Pro fan ever starts making odd noises. Too bad Apple products are so non-repairable now, or people would do this every few months, and this problem would never arise.
Mac is turning into windows vista with so many password prompts.
amoxy6 vista had no password prompts, just a yes or no pop-up.
Its still asking you for permission to do anything.
amoxy6 so does Linux, and every version of Windows since.
Yeah, but its not like for every basic task you need a prompt.
I think if you had a admin password or a user password the pop-up also required a password.
I read somewhere that you should stop the fan from spinning while blowing dust out. Holding fan prevents damage to fan if it spins too fast.
mouse geek that’s only a problem if you use a powerful air compressor.
Benjamin Hale it’s not enough voltage and current to do any damage.
I have almost the exact same problem on my Dell G 17 7790. Just bought some condensed air!

Ken: opens his MacBook himself to clean the fans
Apple: wait that's illegal
I haven't opened my new 2021 MacBook Pro yet, but I open my 2012 MacBook Air semi-annually to dust the fans out.
My macbook is about the same age (2013 MacBook Pro w/ Retina Display) and I had the same issue. Turns out, one of the little fins broke off though so once I took that apart and got that out, it's been completely quiet ever since. I had the EXACT same issue with my Macbook Pro like 2 months ago. I had the fan replaced.
Happy birthday Ken! Hope that everything is okay over there. Thank you for the great content.
The password thing just makes me think about the Mac ad that was making fun of all the UAC prompts
Just opened up my Late 2008 MBP and man was it dusty, am going to replace the thermal paste, use compressed air and a brush and completely blitz it out inside!
where do I put the paste ? Never heard of it till now. I did not see any paste anywhere when I cleaned my twin fans.
I'm surprised nobody has come to reference Rossmann on a Mac repair video.
I believe he has been referenced on other Krazy Ken episodes. Heck, I even reference him in an episode! (I think this one: bit.ly/clan2AlmNia )
@@ComputerClan I've been watching the entire playlist of videos so I will eventually stumble upon it.

The reason the other fan slot had less dust is because that is your gpu fan, it dosent spin unless an application is using the dgpu, which isnt often so thats why there is less dust.
I don't think that's true. The fan controller always reports it spinning. Maybe it doesn't spin up as much. but it's always on.
@@ComputerClan oh odd, that's how it works on my msi gs60. Guess that's what I get for comparing a mac to a windows laptop LMAO

I remember my Windows laptop sounding literally like a drill when it was turned on. The fan was replaced and it was fine.
You're supposed to hold the fan from turning while blowing it out because as it spins, it sends current into the motherboard.
eg1885 not enough current or voltage to damage anything.
And there is a diode on the motherboard to prevent that current only flows one way
i just order the little screwdrivers but I need a can of compressed air. hopefully it works for me too and my macbook pro is only 1 year old!~ thanks krazy ken!

Did Ken, a pretty big Apple fan, just recommend Louis Rossman, someone that seems to hate Apple with a passion?
I am not an Apple fan boy. Holy crap. If you think that, you have certainly not seen all of the videos where I poke fun at Apple.
Thanks for this-- very helpful! x x
I always pull the fans as the dust carpets up on those macbook and any laptops heatsink pretty substantially.
Surprised you didnt. Huh...
Pull the fans?
@@ComputerClan to unscrew the fan use a esd safe brush and air to remove the dust between the back side of the heatsink and fan.
That would take too long. In this computer, you don’t just “unscrew” the fan.
