  • There are a few things that most people know about us by now: That we're die-hard collectors / gamers, and that we don't let language barriers get in the way of playing games. While there are a fairly small set of games that are import-friendly and pretty good for most platforms (which often translates into large price tags for games of particular genres like action, shooting, etc.), the reality is that if you wanna experience ALL the best, you're gonna need to break down the barriers -- there are plenty of good games that never have and likely never will get translated. Sometimes though, the games in question aren't so much amazing as they are a curiosity... take, for example, the last game in a bizarre trilogy with a bit of an identity crisis known colloquially as "Keio".
The series is best known for the hori-shmup that started it all, "Keio Flying Squadron", which was released for the Sega / Mega CD in 1993/94. Released Internationally in extremely limited quantities, it was an unapologetically Japanese game through and through during a time when games that wore their Japanese influences on their sleeves were exceptionally rare (in the sense that they were over-the-top in their cultural weirdness, some examples of the era being games like "Parodius", "Pocky & Rocky", "Musya", etc.) and over the years it has transformed into a bit of a phenomenon and holy grail for the platform.
It would get a sequel more than two years later for the Sega Saturn in 1996 (KFS2) that was mostly a side-scrolling action / platformer (a few segments break up the monotony including shooting segments). This game took place a year after the first game plot-wise and was never released in the U.S., though a few PAL areas were lucky enough to get a few copies. The last game would not get an English release at all and didn't even stick to Sega's platforms -- it's a board game for PlayStation whose full name is "Rami-chan no Ōedo Sugoroku ~Keiō Yūgekitai Gaiden~" (蘭未ちゃんの大江戸すごろく慶応遊撃隊外伝).
While being a "Gaiden", it still moves the story forward, taking place a year after Keio 2. After the first two battles with Dr. Pon that did cataclysmic damage to Edo, Japan, things are starting to look normal again and Rami, Pochi (Spot) and the gang go to the beach to have some "fun". What they're really doing is following a hot lead on more sacred treasures and swim off the beaten path to an abandoned shrine. After blowing up the ground and reaching the disclosed location, they reach a door with a powerful seal they can't open. Just when they think they're empty- handed, Pochi finds a ring with the same seal as the one on the locked door. It turns out that it's one of King Solomon's treasures, and the rest are hidden somewhere around Japan. Rami now travels around Japan to go through all the leads on the rest of Solomon's treasures, and Dr. Pon is tracking her every move. For whatever reason, the best way to gather information is to raise more money than everyone else in a game similar to Monopoly where you build food stalls for different festivals... it's really not explained why, but Keio's worldview never made much sense anyway.
That being said, if you've played Monopoly or any of its derivatives, you know the game's general flow; buy properties, increase your capital, dabble in chance, be lucky, etc. While the game looks pretty sharp in an emulator (smoothed out videos, ultra sharp graphics, less jaggy polygons, etc.), the actual game is a bit low budget -- there's little voice acting, some images are grainy or lack focus, the framerate is kinda choppy, the game uses very simple 3D graphics with characters with floating limbs like Rayman, and the game recycles a few music tracks from both Keio AND Keio 2. However, before you go off thinking the game is bad, I must say that the game has some nice 2D art, the original music is pretty neat, and the game, most importantly, is fun.
Yes, it is kinda rigged like many computerized board games before it (in this case, the computer is almost impossible to beat in certain mini-games, almost always gets "lucky" and finds items constantly, has a penchant for somehow avoiding whole zones of occupied property, etc.), but there's actually several exploits too that make the game one of the easier computerized board games (special powers to reach "Go", A.I.'s mismanagement of stamina, some mini-games where you have control like Sumo Wrestling are pretty easy, etc.). The game also has a lot of underlying mechanics that I won't get into here, but they're fun to play with and I will pin a comprehensive guide in the comments of tips from playing. All in all, as the last Keio game, it could've been better, but it's a decent time sink nonetheless. This is a video of assorted KYG footage. Enjoy.

    1) 露店の
    (購入・設置・撤去・増資)
    をおこないます
    Option 1: Street vendor
Purchase, installation, removal, capital increase (four options)
    * Capital increase depends on initial stall price and costs money, but even cheap places can become a good investment with enough capital. Invest wisely and don't put all your ducks in one row.
    2) アイテム
    物件
    物件見学
    持ち物をしらべます
    Option 2: Check Your Belongings
    Item
    Property
    Property tour
    3) Use Ninja Arts or "Magic" (You can only use this if your stamina or bar is full, but there are four and they are all useful)
    ねずみ忍法
    アイテムの1つを2個こふやします。
    Mouse Ninja Arts
    Add two of the items.
    (This is the least useful)
    うし忍法
    他プレイヤーの店をぜんぶ撤去しまず。
    Ox Ninja Arts
First, remove all other players' stores.
    (VERY USEFUL, especially mid-late game)
    とら忍法
    今いるマスにある店をこわしてしまいます。
    Tiger Ninja Arts
I will break the store in the square where I am now.
(Useful if you can withstand a rival store's penalty)
    うさぎ忍法
    コアラ募金のします。マスへと移動
    Rabbit Ninja Arts
Koala donation. Move to Mass (Go)
(VERY USEFUL early-mid game or whenever you really need money)
    4) 売却
    交換
    土地や店を、売ったり交換したりします。
Option 4: Sell and exchange land and shops.
Sell: Your sold items will go to the highest bidder.
    - Land (Choice 1)
    - Shop (Choice 2)
Exchange: Choose one of the three characters and what you'd like to exchange. You can barter for goods in this way by choosing what you want to offer and what you'd like in exchange from your opponent. The problem is the A.I. chooses if they want to accept or counter-offer and most of the time, they will not accept your trades unless it is of great benefit to them. You can try as many times as you'd like on your turn though, and if you find yourself in a position of having a lot of money or goods, it doesn't hurt to try and snatch up as much territory as you can afford, although cash is your lifeblood, so be careful not to spend it all in one place.
    - 金 (Money)
    - 土地 (Land)
    - 露店 (Stall)
    - 取り消し (Cancel, to reverse selections)
    - 終了 (End, to make the final call to go with the trade or cancel entirely)
    5) **Change settings (**this is the same as the in-game pause menu when there are nothing but A.I. players)
    6) サイコロ
    やめる
    サイコロをふります。
Option 6: Roll the dice or stop (two choices). You get to move.

    [Game Notes Part 2]
    ***General Play Tips***
    - Focus on buying as many expensive stalls as quickly as you can on Stage 1 while holding on to a few hundred Ryou early on (200-400), as they have a high initial cost but can be installed for free and have a higher return than cheap stalls that you spend additional turns upgrading. The extra Ryou are to thwart stalls early on until you reach Go as well as the yearly penalty dished out by the bear, which is usually in the realm of 200-500 Ryou depending on the number of items you have in your possession or other factors.
    - Always jump in the sumo mini-game and let the others bump themselves off first. This almost gaurantees victory and a cool 1000-2000 Ryou.
    - Prioritize items that restore stamina when given the opportunity or items that increase your number of dice rolls. If you get items that drop an opponents or everyone's stamina to zero, even better -- the goal is to not let the opponent use special skills whenever possible while boosting your stamina more quickly.
-If you get full stamina, always warp to the "Go" spot unless you're close... besides getting that neat 800, you have a chance of getting a large bonus because warps count as an "exact" move and if you land exactly on go, you get a chance at an additional bonus (which is sometimes larger than the regular bonus itself, it depends on how many "Red Donation" boxes players pay as well as the dreaded Donation item that takes half a players money) and you can pass Go, use your warp, and immediately pass it again to get 1600+ Ryou! If you can get more dice, it increases your odds of travelling the board faster, but don't waste it if you're close to the goal to give you more chances of landing exactly on the spot for a bonus.
    - If you get Dr. Pon, don't stress too much; he's a deadly guy to have wandering around, but an opponent will more than likely tag you and pick him up and have some item to dispose of him before he becomes a threat. In the event he does stay too long, he will explode and take all of your stamina as well as reduce your money to zero.
    - Never remove a stall if you don't have to, even if it's a cheap one; an empty zone, even if for one turn, gets the opponent the opportunity to steal it, and then you gotta fight them or force them into bankruptcy to give it back. Always buy stalls at first and then constantly upgrade when possible (increase capital).
    - If you land three of the same number on a roulette, you can earn bonus cash or avoid a penalty altogether.
    - The A.I. is not good at negotiating trades, so never trade with them if they offer you money or zones. However, you can bid for properties and zones and should always do so when possible as they will never exceed the full market value of a stall and owning vacant lots is a must for winning, so a couple hundred Ryou is a drop in the bucket for those.
    - Every stall and zone you own counts as capital to help you win at the game's end even if you don't have it in play. Of course, expensive stalls that have been upgraded repeatedly will net you massive points over really cheap stalls in play, so have as many valuable properties on the board as you can.
    - Multiple curses can be play in a single turn if you have them, so get rid of them pronto.
You can deliver them to other characters through items, when you land on the same space as them, or dispose of them with items or at shrines (100 Ryou DX option).
    - The main story is annoying in that you essentially have to play each board twice to get everything; two characters hold Solomon's Treasures while the others give you information for new areas, but you can only interrogate two of the three characters upon victory.
    - Stage 2 is longer and tricky, so emphasize on mid-tier stalls to stretch your money further and improve your odds of winning.
    - Stage two allows you to use detours, warps, and a new mini-game where you avoid hitting spikes on the ceiling. A good strategy here is to buy all the zones in the warp zone to put up stalls as it's a figurative death trap; the A.I. often gets stuck there for a while and if you can own mid-tier properties or better on all four squares, it will virtually ensure victory
    .
    - There is a mini-game where players have to search for a kappa on sixteen squares. You can purchase this as one of your available stalls and control where the kappa hides. Stick him in the bottom right corner, as the A.I. almost never checks this spot.
    - Each season doubles the value of food stalls in each of the four quadrants. Spring and Winter sometimes display cherry blossoms and snow over the illustration. Games take place over a period of years, 4-9 years during the main game on average, with a single short game taking roughly two hours, so longer games can take much more time.
    - None of the bonus shop items are really worth it, but if you want the most bang for your buck, get the four charm set for 48000 -- it essentially turns you into a computer character by finding lucky items almost every turn (they always find stuff just because they're a CPU) and it's very difficult to get all four normally by visiting each shrine. Just be mindful that keeping them all takes up half your inventory and could cause problems during the end-of-year taxation on items, so have items to mitigate that (one die from the blessed shop, tax exemption sign, etc.) or a little extra cash on hand near the end of the year to not go into the negatives. Negatives are bad and should be avoided at all costs, even if you're wandering the board broke for a while.

I cant stand the horrible 3D graphics and the gameplay seems boring and non- understandable as its a generic japanese party board style game. A huge disappointment after the amazing first couple of beautiful 2D games.
After watching this for 10 mins i gave up. All i enjoyed watching was the funny anime intro. A real shame that it just went down hill from there.
Thank you though for showing this game off as there is not much info on this game on the net.

@@mariobermudez1228 It'd be nice if someone revived the franchise as seen with the Cotton series. Seems we're long overdue for more Rami.
