    I just saw the video where Sara does a cover of "Clean," and tells the story of how she "sang horribly" here, and Sara, I can't hear it, girl, you kicked butt! I know the beginning you couldn't hear over the crowd, but you recovered so well, and Taylor, you're so kind bringing out these super talented people and exposing YOUR crowd to their talents, and hopefully winning them new fans. Super generous of you, and Sara couldn't speak more highly of you if she tried. Love you both.

    This is one of the reasons I am a fan of Taylor Swift. She isn’t the best vocalist alive - but her spirit and her intelligence and her compassion and goodness shine through. She isn’t intimidated by Sara’s talent - in fact she lets her shine. That’s why people love Taylor. She writes from her heart. She tried to live and be authentic and you can feel that.

    I remember Sara writing about this in her book, how the crowd was so LOUD she couldn't hear her feedback or the music at the beginning! She was embarrassed, but said Taylor was super kind about it. It hurts my heart seeing how thin Taylor is, and knowing how much her comment about 'bad self esteem days' was real. As someone who is recovered from an ED, I hear exhaustion in her voice, not lack of strength. When she started feeding and nurturing herself, her vocals grew to what they should be. You can hear it on her Reputation tour. So proud of these ladies, they've both come such a long way in loving themselves, and I've come a long way listening to their music. x

      thank you for explaining that. I was worried that the feed into her earpieces were sabotaged or something, and apparently it was just the crowd. Which is not a bad problem to have, but yes I was so worried why she began with a lower key

      @nsantore 6 лет назад +79

      It seems Sara didn't have any piano in her in-ear monitors. You can see her pushing on them and hear her hunting around to find the right key as she's entering. They fixed the problem by the time she got down the stairs, but it's no fault of hers. The sound man dropped the ball on sending a proper mix that she could hear to start the song.
      She corrected it damn fast. She's probably used to starting this song off on piano herself. It's tough to get in key when someone else is playing you can't even hear them!

    I can where she felt she screwed up in the beginning, sometimes mistakes you make in the moment feel longer than the moment they actually last. She started off shaky and off-pitch bc she couldn't hear, but holy crap she literally recovered so quickly and killed it. Sang every high note with as much passion and confidence she can put in and honestly, it can be hard to recover when you start off on the wrong foot, it can affect your mentality. I think she did fabulously here, way more than how "poorly" she thinks the whole thing went. Taylor was amazing for being so warm and welcome and kind to Sara, she really shows her respect and appreciation to another fellow artist that's such an icon. Lovely performance.

      They didn't change the key. The original is in Bb, and so is this one. I think (as many people have said) that Sara was having trouble with her ear monitor in the beginning and/or she couldn't hear herself over the crowd.

    • @Invisiguy
      @Invisiguy 3 года назад +20

      Here is Sara's description of this performance from her book Sounds Like Me:
      The stage manager escorted me to the back of the stage and I stood on the giant metal platform, waiting for my introduction. My heart was racing. I heard the drum introduction of Brave begin and then the ground beneath me started rising upward. Taylor called out my name on the microphone and then . . . Nothing. I couldn’t hear ANYTHING but the deafening roar of thousands of tweenage apocalyptic screams. I frantically listened for any music at all. I knew the drums had started, but literally no other sounds could pierce the wall of “woo.” I couldn’t hear the beginning notes of the piano over the crowd, so I ripped out my earpiece to try and hear the speaker system of the venue at least. No good. All I could hear was even louder girl-euphoria. It was time to start singing, so I basically just picked a note out of thin air. I could immediately feel in my throat muscles that it was the wrong one, and I’ll never forget the panicked look on the music director’s face on the side of the stage that just said, “Noooooooooooooooooooo!!” I tried a bunch of other wrong notes for the whole first verse but finally hunted down the right ones by the chorus. I was mortified, but I couldn’t do anything except keep singing for the fans cheering us on. I smiled and danced with Taylor at the end of the catwalk and pretended everything was fine. We got through the song, she hugged me, and I came offstage and felt awful ... I was caught up in the drama of feeling exposed, until Taylor lightened my load. After the show, she came into my dressing room and was graceful and sparkly and complimentary and only celebrated our performance ... She shared a story about a similar situation she’d had on an even bigger stage with even bigger artists, and by doing so, let the air out of my mistake. By treating the mistake with so little weight, it actually became weightless. It was a learning moment for me, and I took note, and will put that into practice again.

    Sara, you sound amazing here! I never even noticed back then when I watched this that there were issues. I thought it was done on purpose. Don't beat yourself up. You're incredible and inspiring. You made the choice to continue singing despite the technical issues. If that isn't brave, I don't know what is! :)

    They covered for the start very well. The Piano player repeating the chord in quick succession to give Sara something to get back in key. Pros at work

    Sara has my all time favorite Taylor Swift cover with her piano version of Clean. Its the only Taylor cover that I might prefer to her own. And that goes for all the songs shes written for other people too, Taylor is the only one who can sing her songs. Thats just a testament to Sara's talent as much as Taylor's!

    I'm currently learning this for a choir. As much as it must pain the artists, like Sarah, who want to get a great performance and who wouldn't, for us mere mortals it is encouraging to hear even the top musos struggle with pitch when they can't hear a tune to follow. There is hope for us yet.
