- After the last RDCs ran in revenue service in Atlantic Canada on 14 January 1990, many were stored at Halifax Station. On 17 November 1992 a train of 15 RDCs, 3 Daynighters and two buffer cars pulled by CN 8704 & 8708 began its journey to Montreal for storage at Montreal Maintenance Centre. This video shows the beginning of their trip
God Rest Your Soul David What A Guy 👍
I rode RDC's on The British Columbia Railway from Squamish to Williams Lake regularly. BCR maintained them well and they were a good ride. Glad to see they were moved on for additional use. The BCR named the trains "The Cariboo."
I did the Clinton to Squamish trip every summer as a kid. Loved it!
The legacy of Brian Mulroney
During the last 3 years of his mandate he cut VIA Rail and as a result Atlantic Canada lost a lot of service
The Super Continential was also cut during this period and the Canadian moved from the CP Mainline to the CN Mainline
+Shahid Bhinder He cut VIA Rail in half and now what is left is struggling to survive.
Thanks David.
nice catches, although somewhat sad
I remember when those cars ran through CFB Cornwallis. You could set you watch by them.
What a shame, they couldn't find a private collector to buy a few of them. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Quite a few are still in tact in Moncton where they were purchased by IRSI. However that company has gone bankrupt and some of the RDC have been scrapped.
Where these made in Canada at one time
What ever happened to the RDC's stored at Industrial Rail Services in Moncton? What will happen to the building and company assets?
IIRC they are about to be scrapped and the assets used to pay off some of the company's debts.
+David Othen Jason Shron from Rapido trains is currently in negotiations to save an via rail RDC

Great news.
UPDATE: Jason Shron HAS Sucessfully Saved RDC 6133!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done Jason. Great news.
Hi David. Other than 6133 have any of the remaining RDC's in Moncton escaped being scrapped?
+brett mcleod Not that I am aware.
A few, actually, are stored at the same yard as 6133
Yes they are very rugged and have survived for much longer than more recently built coaches.
I'm sorry to say David, but you do have some factual errors, the RDCs were actually named the dayliners not daynighters and some stayed in service until late 2008 vancouver island's E&N railroad as a shuttle train from inner vancouver island to Victoria and did you know these RDCs are being refurbished with new hardware? May ant to do a vid on those if you can
The daynighters were the three blue and yellow coaches AHEAD of the dayliners in the train shown.
I have taken three youtube videos of RDCs on Vancouver Island - see the playlist RDCs. The videos were taken in June 1995 & June 2001 and one of these had been refurbished in Moncton. However no RDCs have operated in Atlantic Canada since 1991
+Aot. I'm sorry to say AoT, RDC's operated on Vancouver Island until summer 2011. VIA 6133, 6135, and 6148. Their territory was between Victoria and Courtenay.
As it stands, there are no RDC's on Vancouver Island. There were 3 that were upgraded by VIA for Vancouver Island service, and now it's looking less and less like they will ever return.
And it was CP that gave the RDC the name "Dayliner," not VIA. CN called them Railiners, in CN Service. The name Dayliner just kind of survived in the time of VIA.
+imprezzed42296 That is correct. See my videos of the RDCs taken on Vancouver Island.
Yes CP called them Dayliners and CN called them Railliners . That is why I usually use the term RDC
+David Othen I just wanted to say, thank you son much for all the videos you upload. The late 80's - early 90's are far and above my favourite period of Canadian railroading, and you captured that brilliantly!
Another great vido, sad to see it happen. Over here the railways are governed to what political group is in power. Stan UK.
Thanks. Here it seems there is little pol, itical support from two of our three major political parties for either passenger or freight trains. In fact railways pay fuel tax to support highway construction!!
Appropriate that S13s, just like the Spadina coach yard switchers, take them out.
Yes they were good locomotives
Why not keep them running or does this not keep with the liberal plan of dismantling our rail system?! The Trudeau liberals were a Quebec wins or we all lose type of government!!
the last time I check the Liberal were not in power for the last couple of years, and are still not in power today, in 1990 Brian Mulroney the Prime Minister Under Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Steven Harper not that longue ago invested in Via Rail to modenize the equipement only to cut more in there operation fund. Sound to me the Conservative are the real one to blame. The best Solution for Rail improvement and save this country is not to vote for LIberal or Conservative
