This was my first receiver that I purchased from my cousin Norman W1HOL (SK). It was brand new (Model BC-348N) in mint condition. I got it in September, 1956 when I was first licensed as a Novice ticket in Boston, MA. I also had the Heathkit AT-1 transmitter as part of my first station. Lots of great memories. W2FKN
I agree with you Peter the worm drive tuning mechanism is very smooth and virtually backlash free. I enjoyed hearing the dynamotor purring in the background as well. I heard you mention you have an ART-13 which was used with the BC348's on the B-29 Bombers during WW2. I built a home brew power supply for my ART-13 and currently use it with a BC-348 on 75 meters AM. Another nice WW2 receiver was the BC-342 which looked similar to the BC-348 but I believe it was mainly used in ground installations rather than aircraft. It was also quite a bit heavier than the 348's. 73 OB....
I have 4 of them. RCA, Stromber Carlson 2 with Dynamotors and 2 with 240v PSU conversions.cant agree more with the comments. Also have the mounting plates and matching speakers too. 2 are in museum quality condition
I just got one yesterday. I don’t know what model it is because the tag is missing. The cw is switched with a toggle switch. What speaker are you using? My audio seems weak.
Hi, thanks for the message. Its been a long time since i looked at this but i seem to think that there is a 600 ohm and an 8 ohm output tapping on this radio . There is an audio transformer center back topside and i seem to recall a tapping there for 8 ohms. If you using the crystal filter then its drops the gain a bit . and if its not 'cleaned' its drops teh gain a lot. Effectively its 'Q' drops of due to waxy residue finding its way into the crystal housing. I actually removed the xtal filter, carefully opened it up and took out the Quartz slab that was in there and gave it a good ( gentle) clean and finally a good solvent clean. Clean the housing insides too!. Then gently reassemble the filter and you will be surprised how sharp the Xtal Filter becomes.( AND LOUDER)
