I don't say he has the worst past but with how the death of his family/friend happened, it's understandable. After that he thought he was wothless and closed himself of. He's "I'm different" attitude is more of a big misunderstanding than anything, he's not like them because he thinks he isn't as strong as them. Sorry for the long text but since I know his backstory and undertand his personnality quite well since I have kind of the same mindset as him, I rambled a lot.
