If you want a rounder sound you can put a record under the one you're playing that will act like a bigger turntable, as advised in the original leaflet. It really makes a difference. :)
Wow, that sounds very good. I have one too, but it whines and it helps a bit to put a second record under it. But with this one in the video, that's not necessary. Any recommendations on how I can get rid of the whine?
Hi. To be honest I don't know. Some of my other portables do need an extra disc underneath but this one is fine - or it might just be this particular record.
Hi Richard, I've always felt that a good mica sound box tends to give a warmer tone and some aluminium diaphragms can produce a very metallic sound. The earlier, all-brass, HMV N°4 is still one of my all time favourite sound-boxes.
I have one of these nifty guys too! Unfortunately I’m having some trouble getting it to work. When I set the needle on the record the disc gets weighed down and comes to a stop. Do you by chance know how to fix this? Is my record not screwed down enough? Is the arm too heavy? Did I not wind it up enough? I’d appreciate any advice you have. Thanks.
Hi Aubrey, It's usually caused by the spring being weak but, if the record is particularly worn, this will cause extra drag which won't help. Also make sure you're using a brand new needle each time. Regards, Gordon
Hi John, thank you for your comment. Yes, you're correct, by about 6rpm. If you have experience of these machines you'll be aware that there's only one lever to control start/stop and speed so there is no guaranteed way to start the record at a set speed.
I wasn't expecting that to sound so good
That’s amazing sound from such a small box!
Awesome!!! With Dynamic Sound!!!!☆☆☆☆☆
Beautiful little thing
That's awesome! I have to find one of those.
And Thorens is still around making quality phono gear.

Yeah, I already tried this after finding a pdf copy of the Excelda instructions online but I thought the improvement in the sound was only marginal.
***** Really ? Mine really had less flutter. But it's the metal diaphragmed version so maybe there's more work for the motor in that case.
I recognize that tune- I have the same song covered on another brand of 78 I found.
I want this portable gramophone

Warm regards
Richard

Great anyway
