It looked like rice hulls to me. I found you can buy big bags of them at ag/pet supply stores (NOT petco/petsmart ilk). Sure looked like them. I'd like to know, too.

A tip, get some tape to make your painting edge clean without having to be so cautious and careful. Stick the tape to the outside edges of where you want the paint to *stop*, and then paint the place you want painted. When you're done painting, *carefully* peel off the tape and you should have nice beautifully clean lines. :-)

I agree with you. I would’ve lined the interior of tile with metal mesh before adding the cement to interior of tile for reinforcement.
