I am very disappointed with the price of ultra-modern boxes. When I got back into collecting in 2018-19, the current releases were affordable. I could get a UD flagship hobby box for $70-$75 USD at the LCS. I would buy half a dozen hobby boxes to get a good start on the Young Guns (YGs) set and then piece the rest of the set together. I could sell team sets, inserts, and other hits that didn’t fit my personal collection (PC) on eBay and make back around 80% of what I spent on the hobby boxes. Since 2022-23, the math just doesn’t work out anymore. I ended up grading and selling all the big Young Guns I had collected (Makar, Hughes brothers, Robertson, Stutzle, etc.). Being the sole income earner in my household with a wife and three kids, I just cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars a month on the hobby. I have stopped opening modern wax and now just buy singles, usually waiting at least six months from release unless something is very rare. I was a little surprised by the tone of this episode, but it does paint a bleak picture of where the hobby is headed if kids are not collecting for the sake of collecting. I love busting boxes with my two boys, but it is too expensive to do it regularly with them outside of a few special times each year. I think it is a big mistake not to have blasters at $20 USD and hanger packs under $10 USD available at Walmart and Target. I recall seeing that Panini had Kids Crates a few years ago, which included packs from a variety of basketball/football hobby boxes and could only be bought at LCSs. The point was for kids to get a chance to open some decent hobby packs at a reduced price. I wish UD would do that for hockey cards.
