Yes, it is lion dance so the animal is a lion :-) The style of the animal is specific to Okinawa island in Japan, so it may look different from lion dances in other areas.
Regarding lion dances in mainland of Japan: it is said to be introduced from China as part of "Gigaku" performance around 8th century. One of oldest lion's masks that exist in Japan has an inscription of year 752. Regarding lion dances in Okinawa: it is thought to be introduced from China, but not sure. One of oldest lion dances in Okinawa is of Shuri Tera-cho town, which is said to begin around 1422-1439. I don't think it's a "copy", but indeed it looks somewhat similar to Chinese northern lion dance. I think Chinese lion dance is much more acrobatic.
