      Totally agree, and i dont get why the tf community has decided to say its our job to save it. Sure, we love the game, but this is a product. Valve is paid to keep it live, and its up to them ultimately to keep it live. Im so sick of the toxic positivity, as that will never get anything done to it. If you ask me, as a helldiver and tf2 player, the tf community ought to take a page out of our book. When movements like 'save tf2' happen, it just reinforces to valve that the games players will support this carcass no matter how long they leave it to rot

    When people discuss Sniper balance they always forget the one thing that he has had since the beginning and they NEVER consider tweaking it. The Charge mechanic on sniper rifles is already a perfect method to nerfing his quickscope potential - just make it so shots under 30% or so charge don't do crits. No more quickscopes, people actually have to setup and plan ahead before sniping instead of running in guns ablaze.
    Whats more, is you could add that little laser everyone talks about. The dot sucks. too easy to miss. Make it a laser that increases in opacity the more its charged. You can setup a shot while being relatively hidden but as you keep a closer eye on targets their awareness of you increases.
    Whats EVEN MORE is add a "Sniper!" callout. How come the Spy gets a callout but the Sniper doesn't? Both are the assassin classes, and while there is plenty of counter play to Spy because fuck him in particular(?) there is no meaningful way to address a Sniper in his nest unless your teammates have more than two brain cells.

      yeah that and the fact that sniper just does not make sense as a class. When all classes are short to mid ranged brawlers why do we need a long range instakill class? I am not saying that sniper should be removed but when looking at the other classes if their was one class that could be removed without messing up balance (to much) it would be sniper.

    As a sniper player, I truly think just adding a fairly decently long reload, perhaps with a new reload animation over the garbage we have now would be incredibly balancing for the class, as well as less max ammo. I find that in most of my matches I forget I even have ammo in the first place as I can almost always shoot forever and by the time I take some sort of damage and go heal I get my ammo back too. 25 is just far too high, 12 or 10 would work better but it could be argued for slightly more.

      And in turn, I think the darwins danger shield should have the -50% fire damage stat removed and make it only disable afterburn. Ive never quite used the razorback, but perhaps it could be changed into either less damage from shots hitting snipers back, instead of a backstab canceller, or maybe less melee damage taken on user. But who knows, I certainly dont.

    I don't think Dane is necessarily *wrong* in saying "Valve is 100% to blame for any 'bad' cosmetics/maps being added to TF2. They hold all the power. The workshop is a wide spectrum of talent, artistic integrity, and gameplay awareness. It's Valve's responsibility to sort through it and choose the appropriate content." In all honesty, I think he's completely right! But I think saying that "It's Valve's fault" and ending right there is kind of missing the point of the overall discussion surrounding community cosmetics. I feel like where we should have the goalpost is getting overall higher-quality stuff overall, rather than just begging Valve to do stuff for us. This can be achieved in a myriad of ways, but the first and most obvious way to get this done is of course having overall community review and going off the stats of how people rate items. ...which, if I'm not mistaken, are only viewable by the creator for cosmetics and war paints. For maps it's a bit of a different issue (level design is a lot harder than creating cosmetics, trust me). I don't believe I'd be mistaken in saying though that people would rather have things that the majority likes, rather than something that 5% of players will like.

      What's so crucial about cosmetics is that they represent an imposition from one player unto *all others* on the server as themselves. With maps, you can just choose not to play on that map, but if someone turns up in game with horrific cosmetics that ruin the experience then what can one do?
      A tool that lets you target specific players to turn their cosmetics off, or a selecter that lets you pick cosmetic items and say "make those invisible for me" would help, but ultimately a solid layer of public review would go a mile towards eliminating problem items that 5% of players like, 10% tolerate, 20% dislike and 65% outright detest.

Who are they technically stealing from at the end of the day?- I don't work retail but changes are they are stealing from the shop holding the physical cards so it's on the shop and/or insurance companies to cover the theft- not Valve. If there's a business around stolen credit cards being laundered to gift cards, Valve also profits from it. There's so many morally gray opportunities for Valve to turn this into profit, even accidentally.

    I wish Valve did a reprint for the overpriced strange weapons.
    The huntsman, kritzkrieg and gunslinger cost $80, $170 and $340 respectively. That's a lot for a kill counter.
    To preserve the rarity they could make the existing ones vintage, release the new ones as australium or make them paintable to apply a stat clock.

      If anything, strangifiers already exist. Just add those for the huntsman etc, make them clearly distinctly "strangified" huntsmen as opposed to strange huntsmen, and you're good.

    What really confuses me about this admittedly extremely stupid competitive debate is that I don't think I've ever seen either side stop and ask themselves WHY competitive is so different from standard tf2 in the first place, things like no random crits and to an extent no random bullet spread are understandable, but things such as cutting the number of players in half and having only 5 cp maps seem completely and utterly unnecessary, I think the biggest mistake when it came to the completely failed competitive transition of tf2 was trying to balance weapons for both when the real answer all along was to make competitive more like casual

      @@crack4184 I used to be proud of enjoying tf2 and being a fan(before MYM) now i can't even praise the lost soul and art style that set tf2 apart from other games. Call it homestock syndrome but i love tf2 enough to stay with it until the end.
      You are right btw and the sad part. PEOPLE CAN'T POINT AND EXPLAIN WHAT THEY LIKED ABOUT TF2. if tf2 was not released, most of them would be playing fortnite or your flavor of the month game...     7:00 Counter argument Deep Rock Galactic, even when the season ends, all items are put into rng drops when exploring the caves, that way EVERYONE still has a chance to get the items. It's worked pretty well so far, although it's a game about working together and most of those items are cosmetics and not new weapons so there is a difference.
    If I had to give my own hot take, the Sydney sleeper is the most balance sniper rifle. Plus I like the new G.R.U though the eviction notice could've stayed the same before the Jungle Inferno update.

      To be fair to DRG, it's monetized in a Pay2Play-Manner with a "No content gets wasted" policy that also doesn't allow any type of micromarket to grow out of it. This creates are more healthy way of getting cosmetics by actually earning them (random selection be damned for a moment) and people can buy more cosmetics if they wish to via DLCs. That being said, the unfortunate side-effect is that trying to get a specific cosmetic becomes harder and harder with each season released, since they're linked to random spawns that max out around 22% for a Max-Complexity cave, which may take around an hour to finish if played...normally, I guess?
      Similar issues with Overclock-Cosmetics, but at least for that there are ways to work around this and expect a consistent stream of new OCs.
      Still a way better system than just making certain cosmetics just outright unreasonable to gain or unobtainable, tho.
      Nothing interesting to say regarding the TF2 Takes on my end lol

      And that practice of adding previous seasons’ items to the random loot table has resulted in a massively bloated item list that takes forever to get through as a new player. Not saying previous seasons’ content shouldn’t be preserved, but idk if deep rock is a shining example of how to do it right.

      @@Hotomato I wanna be fair tho and say that this solution is still better than the general norm when it comes to this type of content. Like, at least there *is* an option to grind cosmetics over a period of time. There will be a point where increasing the methods of earning additional cosmetics needs to be increased, as well as additional ways of being able to choose what cosmetics you want or not (similar to Machine-Events and Overclocks since a similar but more important issue existed there as well, given OCs affect gameplay).
      Ultimately tho, one could argue that some of the cosmetics could be moved towards the normal ingame-shop if that isn't done already. A part of me still likes the idea of being able to find cosmetics on random runs; something fun to look forward to if you don't search for some specific cosmetic.

      I haven't played the game in a while, so please clarify for me if there is a chance to get a cosmetic you already have or not and if you get extra game currency for it. If so, they should change it so there's a guarantee that if you did get a cosmetic, it won't be one you already have. Just imo.

    8:21 I actually wholeheartedly agree with this. It's significantly easier for people to subconsciously be swayed by someone merely expressing an opinion than you might think. In my opinion, forming your own opinion rather than absorbing one you're exposed to is a skill that has to be learned and practiced over time, whereas if it was something we were all inherently capable of, it'd be a lot harder to spread misinformation, conspiracy theories, extreme political or religious views, prejudice, dumb internet trends, and other things that thrive on a lack of critical thinking than it currently is. It also certainly doesn't help if you're like me and don't play the game enough to have a grasp on various aspects of the game and have to rely on secondary sources (namely content creators) to fill in those knowledge gaps
    43:57 "Maining a class" doesn't mean "exclusively playing one class unless forced to play another". Most people will be more drawn to a select few classes because they facilitate playstyles they like, but that doesn't mean everything else is off the table; this applies to just about any game with multiple characters or playstyles. Obviously playing a wider variety is good because you experience more of the game's content and it gives you valuable experience, but maining is still a natural thing to do and serves a good purpose

      exactly. in the heat of the moment, the idea of giving the keys to a new dev sounds good until you look at the many games that were destroyed once they were given to new devs that simply didnt understand the intricacies of the game or in 343s case, thought they could “do better” and burned a ticket for limitless money.

      @@darthgamer9861 Honestly, aside from indie devs, I can think of no studios, developers or other corporate entities that put art before profit like Bungie did. They were (RIP old Bungie...) one of the last standouts from before gaming became profitable, and I shudder to think we will never see the kind of art they produced ever again on a scale greater than what a dozen or fewer people can complete.
      Profit kills art. Profit kills the planet. Profit kills us. We need to get rid of it before it gets rid of us.

    I know how to balance the Kunai: So basically, you add a bar and if you get a backstab, it depletes the bar but however large the bar was, the more health you get. The bar can be passively recharged or using the revolver will help recharge.

      Kunai balance- Every backstab drains the health gain bar but once that runs out you start using your cloak meter instead, if you run out of cloak you no longer get any health on kill. Also for that revolver thing probably should have it be the le'trange or the enforcer because having it damage based means a diamond back or ambassador spy would basically still be what he is now.

      I think that the overheal should be granted over time. like, if you get a good backstab, you should still get that same 210 health. But, if you were to take damage (say, a stray minigun bullet) your overheal would stop at wherever it was at. It would make kunai spy chain stabbings more managable, as it would prevent you from having to send a sniper quick scope, a frontier justice crit, 4 rockets, and 4 pipes to kill one spy.

    Finally someone said it about the Direct Hit. LP really gave it a reputation as an anti-scout gun, but it really isn't warranted. As the titles of his videos suggest, he's a very emotionally driven player, and I'll agree with him, landing a Direct Hit on a Scout is deeply satisfying as a Soldier. It's also terribly frustrating as a Scout. However, at the end of the day, rocket+panic will kill faster and more reliably than the Direct Hit, and as a Scout as unfun as it is to fight the DH soldier, once they whiff a rocket, I've basically won, without losing a sliver of health.

    also maps can be made heavy dominated if they are too close quartered, but this usually never happens because people build maps that enable rocket jumpers
    Single control point maps are good maps because they allow areas to change team control to prevent any class from dominating, exceptions of huntsman sniper hitbox BS (scout) and darwins danger shield BS (pyro).

    I generally find that most TF2bers act extraordinarily differently to actual players in game.
    They're very whitewashed, very "silly" and whimsical, all use Twitter, try to make out that this game has a very comforting and accepting community.
    They act very positive, but deep down, they're just as toxic as they claim not to be, people like Shork, Soundsmith, etc.
    They're allowed to just get away with it, as long as they take the moral high ground.
    Something about that just urks me the wrong way, they act like they're mightier than all, because they have a "platform"
    They're better than us normal casual players, who I guess are all just racist, evil people for exercising non-consequential harmless free speech.
    Zesty is the only TF2ber who's just a normal, honest guy, with opinions. He gets hate for it, but he deals with it very well. He's strong and doesn't give in.
    Normal RUclipsrs would BOW DOWN and BEG to their KNEES for forgiveness over their own genuine opinions, but Zesty stands up for himself.
    I'm thankful for a TF2ber like Zesty, compared to people who wear a faulty fake mask, covered in tape.

    Sometimes I forget about what Zesty was talking because of the clips. In one clip he butterknife'd soldier and pyro with one hit each, soldier blew him self up whilet running and shooting at dancing soldier and demo.

    You forgot to mention that the Direct Hit is almost always worse for advanced rocket jumping because of its projectile speed. Not that you can't get good with it, but it messes with your muscle memory so bad compared to the other launchers, even the Liberty Launcher.

      That's similar to the issues with the Loch n load, theoretically the faster projectile speed is a buff that allows longer range hits, however in practice it acts either as a side grade or nerf due to how much it messes with your muscle memory.

    I wonder if nerfing the Kunai's overheal depletion rate to be the same as a Medic could be a good nerf. You're still rewarded but you have to act quickly to benefit from the bonus health and otherwise you'll more quickly return to your more vulnerable base form

    The hardest part about me playing overwatch with friends is that the healers have no feeling to them, and the few characters i enjoy playing are essentially all C-D tier meta picks, so you just get out meta’d and your team loses because you wanted to have fun. In tf2, you win by playing what you like, which is almost the antithesis of overwatch

    The take about the current state of TF2 hit me like a brick. For a long time I have been parroting this idea that yeah, TF2 doesn't need Valve, the community is better at managing TF2 than Valve, and the content they create is more important than the content that Valve creates. But a number of community servers I used to play on went to shit recently with bad staff, most of the fan projects have either had dwindling playerbases that only get replenished when an occasional video about them goes viral, and now they're getting slapped with DMCAs. The only thing that I even have a sliver of positive feelings towards is the custom games. I know you hate them, but to me they hearken back to the days when Valve would add a new item and everyone would be running around trying it out, it may not have been balanced, but nobody cared! The game was really badly balanced in general back then, like, what's a little more bad balance gonna do to the game huh? Unless something was truly centralizing or gamebreaking. Nobody really cared that degreaser+axtinguisher was basically demoknight but somehow even more braindead, people loved it.

    The gas passer only works in a really fucking weird way that I've noticed. Firstly, thinking about the gas passer: Does it MATTER if you've been gassed? No, not at all. If you really think about it, you'll probably be lit on fire anyways if the pyro just threw a gas passer: They're almost definitely still around. That said, its a debuff that people avoid. So you can throw down your big stinky shit gas cloud that does effectively nothing, and people still avoid it like the plague because "OUUGHH, BIG EVIL NONO DEBUFF ZONE". That said its still the worst weapon in the entire game and nothing even compares, but I find it funny how you can make people avoid a general area for 5 seconds despite the debuff being meaningless to 8/9 classes, and only slightly annoying to an enemy pyro.

    I’m at the part where you’re talking about how sniper’s limiting factors are too easily overcome by skill. I think a neat change that could be made alongside some numerical tweaks would be making sniper take minicrits for 2~3ish seconds upon scoping in. This would encourage snipers to charge up their shots more often from behind cover, slowing down their kill rate, as well as making the act of entering scope itself a weighted decision with downsides that can’t be overcome by just aiming better. Additionally, since minicrits remove damage falloff, the enemy will have an easier time fighting back against a sniper that’s going too fast.
    Plus, sniper can have spy-like moments of bad luck where they scope in at a bad time and get obliterated, which can be funny and gives tf2’s two ‘assassin’ classes a shared identity in that sense.

    What if the Pomson functioned exactly like the Righteous Bison (fast reload, penetrating projectile, same damage, etc), but instead of the cloak/uber draining stuff, it just caused spies to have an electrified effect similar to the visuals of afterburn that'd be visible while cloaked? It's not negating the Spy's skill because he has to get hit by the Engineer for it to apply, which means he either approached through spam or got caught and is retreating, but it rewards the Engineer for hitting the Spy by making it easier to track him down and finish him off.

    My hottakes:
    - The Candy Cane is the scout's worst melee weapon. A small healthpack is not as much as people think, over 95% of the games someone joins will have soldiers and demomen, and 25% vulnerability to them is a lot. What makes a weapon isn't just that it's upsides are useless, it's also that it's downsides worsen gameplay. The upsides of the Sun-on-a-Stick might be weird and are almost never useful but it's not like it's downsides are crippling like the Candy Cane's.
    - Despite what you (@ZestyJesus) said in your reaction to Grouch's awful rebalance video, yes, the Jag is too strong. It's downsides of doing less damage against sappers or not repairing buildings as much in a single hit is completely negated by the faster swing speed. I don't care about defenses used like muh "burst healing" with the default wrench, that doesn't matter as much as you think. What matters is that the amount of time it takes to heal a building or remove a sapper is not negatively affect when using the jag.
    - The Gloves of Running Urgently were also not ruined the Jungle Inferno update despite how much babies said it was, nor do I think the decision was influenced by comp-fags. People do this exact same shit every time a blatantly unbalanced item, such as the Dead Ringer, gets reworked. Yes, the GRU isn't as good as for getting to the frontlines as they used to be but they're now better for repositioning and running away.
    - The Boston Basher is overrated by the competitive community and is only good for building uber. I honestly want you ask yourself how the scout's melees work and are used. They do less damage per swing but swing faster, and scouts often just press W while holding down left-click, which means missing a lot and the self-inflicted bleed upon miss is absolutely painful on a class with 125 health.
    - It's understandable why the 6v6 meta is the way it is and why competitive players don't want to shake it up too much. Certain classes with unlockable item can fuck up the flow of a match while others are too weak. If heavies had the same mobility as their teammates or if engineers could get their stuff set up in a short amount of time, they'd be cancerous to fight against in 6v6. It would be like the Overwatch GOATs meta.
    - 5CP is almost as bad as Capture the Flag as a gamemode. Most of the maps are clearly designed for 6v6 competitive which doesn't bode well in 12v12 casual. The soldier and scout often have stupid advantages thanks to the map design that heavily favors them because, again, they're designed for competitive where slower classes like the heavy and engineer are rarely ever played except when defending the last point.
    - Weapons like the Spycicle and the Razor Back are fundamentally bad design. Having an item with the sole purpose of countering one class is 7 different levels of retarded, and Valve should've never added them in to begin with.
    - Sniper, as a class, fucks up the fundamental balance in TF2. Having a truly long-ranged class in a came where every else is effective at medium to close range is flat-out bad game design. Any other class can be properly punished by the enemy for fucking up except the sniper because they'll often be too far away do to something about them. His weakness of close range combat also doesn't matter because, again, he'll often be too far away for a non-sniper to do anything about it. There's no actual counterplay against him as another class because, again, he's too far away.
    - The weapons that the TF2 community largely regard as pathetic or useless like the Fan-o-War and Sharpened Volcano Fragment aren't nearly as bad as people make it them to be. Same thing with the first paragraph, their upsides may nigh-useless but it's not like their downsides hinder the player like the downsides of the Candy Cane and Warrior's Spirit. The pros of the latter do not nearly make up for their cons.
    - There's a difference between something in a game being unbalanced and cancerous, though something being unbalanced can lead to it being cancerous. You could argue that medic is more OP than sniper because of their necessity for a team to win, but sniper is without a doubt the most cancerous class in the game. The only effective counterplay against sniper is by going sniper and it's never fun.
    - 2/3 of the maps in TF2 are terrible. The old ones like Dustbowl had horrific chokes and tight spaces that made it spam heaven while newer maps like Sulfur are visually confusing and have enormous sniper sightlines. Shockingly enough, most of the maps that the likes of Big Joey wanted to be added to the game are actually not good for gameplay. The sightlines on one of them was horrific. Also, maps with more saturated colors like Suijin can be disorienting and make it a little bit harder to recognize teammates, unlike a map such as Gravelpit, nor do they fit into the game.

    i know ppl dont agree w/ this but sniper tends to be hard to counter because of bad map design, especially asymetrical maps where a defense sniper can sit right next to spawn and/or a sentry nest, in symetrical gamemodes sniper acts more like an engineer, denying a certain area or supporting the mid fight, and the constant movement of the frontlines stops him from getting too well setted up, plus good symetrical maps tend to have lots of flank routes, multiple main routes, angles, cover (especially on capture points) all of this making sniper more like a very far but narrow sentry. I know this is long but I just wanted to put a small opinion on the table.

    Maybe the kuni (idk how to spell it nor do I care) for spy should only give a little bit of health on a successful backstab ( like maybe 30 health) and then the rest of the health you will slowly gain at the speed of a medigun’s healing. That way you still get the same amount of health you normally would, but you get the health slower so that if you are spotted people still have a better chance to kill you.

      I actually like that. my biggest problem with the kunai. that it punish you for having a bad teammates, as also encourage the spy to exploit the tf2 broken melee system. (also enemy spy should not just chain stab my teammate in front of me, as i waste all of my ammo trying to deal with him.THEN HE GET AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE HE JUST BACKSTABBED THAT ONE CLUELESS f2p heavy. that just frustrating)
      also i can argue its detrimental for you if you want to seriously improve as spy. take it from an ok spy. kunai encourage bad habits. that why i prefer the spy cicle (or YER for more challenge and reward)

      @@CoolSs dude the YER is so fun to use, even if it is considered one of the worse spy weapons. When I’m feeling bored I will sometimes switch to it and have fun trying to get the one play where you kill someone directly in front of their team and somehow nobody notices.

      I know that this idea isn’t too complicated either because the Gloves of running urgently do this exact thing when deployed except it instantly takes away a portion of health and then slowly drains it.

    My idea for balancing sniper is to make the sniper rifle have damage falloff that the scope charge negates, meaning a 100% charge having 0 damage falloff and an un-scoped or quick-scope shot having normal bullet damage falloff.

    Add a cooldown to being able to headshot with sniper, aka it takes a second after charging to be able to get headshots, you know, to make him weak at close range

    As a person who plays a game where a sniper class has access to invisibility and tools to see enemies on a minimap, I say: give TF2 Sniper lens flare. Or a laser sight like in MVM. Or anything to be able to 1. Spot the sniper to begin with and 2. See the level of his charge. If i pull up from a corner as a Heavy and see a literal beacon on the other side of the sightline i now at least know that i should run the fuck away

      TF2 Classic gives sniper tracer rounds. They're not as noticeable as the machina, but they're still quite visible which punishes sniper for missing his shots. Also nerf quick scoping so it takes around half a second for his rifle to do critical damage. And possibly make an uncharged headshot do 140 damage instead of 150

    I think the kunai should have had the inverse of what it had. It gave you the amount of health missing from the enemies. So like a scout has 100hp if you backstab you get 25 + some low base hp added to every stab for ensurance when backstabbing high health targets

    I think Valve's negligence is a blessing in disguise. Neglect has ruined casual matchmaking, but having an active developer who constantly tries to fix things (even if they aren't broken) and making constant balance changes can ruin the whole game, not just casual. Btw I'm biased because I only play on community servers. I can take a long break and return, knowing that my skills and knowledge and still relevant and I don't have to learn some new phlog activiation mechanic or overheal decay algorithm or engineer building metal cost adjustments.

      imo. revert tf2 to pre mym and give us the pyro fixes and i will be happy (maybe keep the buff and don't need anything from mym) then all Valve need to do is make sure the game run well and no game breaking bugs and i would be a happy camper.

    I think the pompson could use a complete redesign. Personally, I'd like to see the draining stat removed entirely and replaced with this idea I've had for a while. Basically, the pompson will 'hyper-charge' your buildings if you shoot them, making turrets fire 15% faster (but use 25% more ammo while hyper-charged), teleports recharge 15% faster, and dispensers heal 15% percent faster and recharge their ammo/metal stores 15% faster. If you target enemy buildings with this weapon, the building goes haywire, making all the listed attributes 15% slower/less effective. The effect lasts for 5 seconds, renews with another shot, and you cannot wrangle a turret that has been hyper-charged by you.
    As for everything else about the weapon, I'd probably make the projectile pierce, but other than that I think it's fine as is if you give it this. Giving it anything else after this change would probably overpower it. I'd like to hear more of your thoughts on this though, Zesty.

    Rework the razorback so its like the battalion's backup or something and allows immunity against backstabs if you get a couple headshots

      That doesn’t work unless you already know that you’re about to get backstabbed for one, and for two, Sniper shouldn’t have pure immunities to one-hit kill mechanics. Personally, I think the razorback should actually function the way that the old Croc-O-Style bonus did and let you hang on with one hp if you get backstabbed, rather than fully negate it.
