The film was shot entirely in Helsinki. The film has been released on VHS and DVD. The film has been shown on television between 1978 and 2020 a total of 15 times - in one year even five times. The film is the second most watched Finnish film of the 1970s and the 19th most watched domestic film in Finland.

After growing up, Uuno moved to Helsinki. There he got to work, met Elisabeth and got married. Turhapuro's home was located somewhere in Helsinki, but the neighborhood varied between films depending on where the exterior shots were taken.

When Pasanen took the Turhapuro films abroad in the 1980s, he translated the character's name into English Numbskull Emptybrook or Pointlessbrook, and into French Bébert Bocal. In Sweden and Germany, the Finnish name was used.

A total of 20 Uuno Turhapuro films were made between 1973 and 2004. Originally, only one film was planned to be made, but due to the great popularity, more films were made.
Most of the films have been directed by Ere Kokkonen and written by Spede Pasanen. Starting with the 1984 film Uuno Turhapuro in the bread of the army, Kokkonen wrote all the Turhapuros he directed himself.

In 2003, Kokkonen and Loiri started planning to make the last Turhapuro film in memory of Spede Pasanen. Uuno Turhapuro - This is my Life (2004) is based on an idea developed by Spede and Ere Kokkonen, in which Uuno infiltrates a retirement home for the rich and gets on a television reality show to reminisce about his life. The last Turhapuro film was made by the old working group. In this film, Tapio Hämäläinen returned to play the mountain counselor Tuura.

There are two types of information about Uuno's time in the army. First, it was said that he had invaded Sweden and had been imprisoned for three years. Indeed, in a later film, he was revealed to have dropped out of his conscript service after only one day, and was later shown completing his service.

Since the Uuno films were made one part at a time and without the intention of making a film series, the flashbacks and memories of the past seen in the films are not consistent, but bring some contradictions into Uuno's life story.

Pasanen wanted Uuno Turhapuro to appear to be properly run down. Based on this, the actor Loiri developed his characteristic appearance for the character in front of the mirror in the mask shop. She fluffed up her hair, added light eye make-up above her eyes and dark eye make-up below, replaced her own eyebrows with short square eyebrows, dyed her nose and lower lip red, painted a beard on her cheeks and blackened her second upper front tooth. In later years, more teeth were lost. Loiri drew an anchor tattoo on his arm. The character's make-up was exaggeratedly strong at first, because the Uuno sketches and films of the first years were black and white. For the character's outfit, Loiri chose a baggy army mesh shirt, gray baggy pants, suspenders, a long and frayed poplin jacket, and the casual footwear used in the barracks, the "kus skates", which he later replaced with size 54 shoes. As accessories, the character wears white-rimmed sunglasses. He often combs his hair back, and smokes cigars and cigarettes.

Uuno Turhapuro (Vesa-Matti Loiri) is getting married to Elisabeth Tuura (Marjatta Raita). When both have "wanted" to get married, Turhapuro asks the priest (Ere Kokkonen) that "is it clear now" and the priest answers "yes". Turhapuro shouts aside to his father "Well, father! Do you believe? It worked. Now we're happily married!". Finally, Uuno whispers a kiss on Elisabeth's lips.
The everyday life of the marriage is quite simple: Elisabeth goes to work and Uuno lies on the couch, very dirty and dressed in a mesh shirt and suspender boots, waiting for food. When Elisabeth suggests that Uuno look for a job, Uuno manages to change the subject through imaginative explanations. Uuno plans to build a so-called violin with the "do-it-yourself" method and learn to play with this natural method. He thinks he "works" at a car repair shop, but when the truth is revealed, he only goes there for lunch, to play casino games and eat snacks with his best friends Härski-Hartikainen (Spede Pasanen) and Lettusen (Simo Salminen

In the tram, Uuno tries to travel freely with poor success, he has to argue with the financier of the tram (Titta Jokinen) and loudly declares in the middle of the tram that: "We're going to the hospital to take the baby. The varicose veins will be cut from it and the bottom will travel a bit". Due to the spread of the rumor, Elisabeth has to go to the milk shop to show off her legs. Uuno invites Hartikainen to visit them and records a funny conversation that goes like this: "Well, wife, where does the food stay. Pace, pace, tsop-tsop-tsop-tsop. After dinner, I'm going to lunch with Härski-Hartikainen. Damn it, listen to the two centurion And when I come home at four at night, I don't serve directly from the mailbox and then you go into bed and pull the blanket tightly over your ears, I can't bear to see familiar women in the room, when strangers were also available." Hartikainen thinks the story is right and asks Uuno to give a proper lesson to the record store saleswoman (Tiia Louste), who has forbidden Hartikain to listen to Katri-Helena's "Tuhelinlangat laulua". Uuno completely humiliates the salesman so that he submits to Hartikainen's re-listening session without saying a word.

At home, Elisabeth is waiting for Uuno with a shotgun in her lap, but Uuno gets an explanation about his wife, and Elisabeth prepares a princely dinner for them. According to previous experiences, Uuno thinks the incident was just a dream and declares that he is on a "diet", eating only a few pieces of bread and vegetables. However, he calls the upstairs neighbor, Mr. Kotkala-Hammaslärvänen (Juhani Kumpulainen), very carefully telling him the dishes for dinner. The mistake is only discovered at night, and by morning Uuno has already emptied the entire fridge of "summer cottage food". Kotkala-Hammaslärvänen calls with a very mean voice and congratulates the diet. He sends a little girl (Mari Alakoski) to bring flowers to Uuno, which Uuno in turn takes to the neighbor Mrs. Välivilja (Mirjam Himberg). In the meantime, Elisabeth has received flowers from the upstairs neighbor and has invited Kotkala-Hammaslärvänen to dinner.

Uuno and Elisabeth are preparing to go to their villa on bikes, which Uuno advertises in the yard overhearing the neighbors. In addition, to the annoyance of Kotkala-Hammaslärvänen, he too carefully presents the "snacks" in his backpack, which were not there at all but had a bird's nest in the backpack. Once there, Uuno feels like he's in a very good sleeping condition. During the visit of the villa neighbor (Anna-Liisa Ruotsi) at the villa in Turhapuri, Uuno does his hair, shows off his muscles and performs swimming jumps. The 50 pennies that fell on the ground makes Uuno ride his bike to Esso's bar - to no avail.

Uuno finally finishes his violin and performs for the first time in the television show "Uudet kyvyt éis". Kotkala-Hammaslärvänen becomes Uuno's manager, because Uuno was very successful. When Uuno shows up at the car repair shop to play casino, Hartikainen and Lettunen are facing the flower bush.

From the very beginning, critics considered Uuno films really bad: they were called, for example, unstructured mössö and a collection of excessively long sketches. They also wondered about the character's ugliness.
Viewers liked Uunoi more than critics. Even the first film got 600,000 viewers, but success was not expected. The most popular Uuno film is Uuno Turhapuro in the army's bread from 1984, which received more than 750,000 viewers in cinemas. It was the most watched film in Finland of its entire decade (including foreign films) and since 1968 the most watched domestic film until February 2018, when Aku Louhimiehe's version of The Unknown Soldier broke Uuno's audience record with over a million viewers. Even the last Uuno film, Uuno Turhapuro - This Is My Life, received 145,000 viewers and was the third most watched film of 2004.

When MTV bought Spede Pasanen's companies and films in the mid-1980s, Pasanen himself made it a condition that Kokkonen must become the production manager and director, to which Kokkonen agreed only if he could become the scriptwriter of the future Uuno, because in his opinion Uuno had become too mean over time (what Uuno under no circumstances should there be), and he wanted to soften her character. In the years 1987-1990 and 1993, Pasanen set himself up as a screenwriter after a dispute with Ere Kokkonen, working alongside Hannu Seikkula and Pertti Melasniemi as a director as well. However, the plot of the films and many of the individual jokes are developed together by Pasanen, Kokkonen, Loir and sometimes also Simo Salminen, each bringing their own ideas. Then Pasanen, sometimes Kokkonen, compiled the final script from them.
When Spede Pasanen retired from filmmaking in 1998, he sold the production rights to Turhapuro films to Ere Kokkonen in the 1990s. The two latest Uunos are directed and produced by Ere Kokkonen. He made the second one, Johtaja Uuno Turhapuro - pisnismies (1998), in collaboration with Spede production.

The usual plot of Uuno films is based on the tension between Turhapuro and his father-in-law; mountain counselor Tuura, who hates his son-in-law, runs into repeated setbacks in his career, when Turhapuro pops up at inopportune moments. Uuno also repeatedly wins over his father-in-law in all possible situations: When Tuura, appointed as the Minister of Defense, orders Turhapuro into the army (Uuno Turhapuro in the army), he becomes a major during his conscript service. When Tuura participates in the presidential race (Uuno Turhapuro is Mr. Helsinki), Uuno becomes president of the republic half by accident.

Pasanen had given Loir the right to modify his character's lines to suit his own mouth. Thanks to this acting freedom, Uuno has a very original way of speaking, which includes, among other things, curtness, drama, numerous filler words, imprecisely used polite words, abundant use of the word Meikäläinen, and pronouncing d as t.
In his speech, Uuno is brash, outspoken and a male chauvinist. He constantly tries to slip away from work and other situations with a diligent explanation. Even though he is married, he flirts with other women and constantly plans to change his wife

Turhapuro's regular helpers are his car repair friend Härski Hartikainen (Spede Pasanen) and engineer Sörsselssön (in the beginning Lettunen and in between Lörsson, Simo Salminen). One of the most significant supporting characters in the films is Tuura's secretary Unelma Säleikkö, who meets all the other standards set by Uuno for women, except wealth. Because of this, during the movies Uuno stays with Elisabeth, in the horizontal cup being an immense inheritance through Elisabeth, and from Unelma ageless beauty, cultivated behavior, intelligence and breasts. However, Uuno keeps Unelma very close to him mentally, worshiping and swearing to love her and that if there was no inheritance, Unelma would be his and vice versa. Uuno's mother-in-law (Marita Nordberg, Anja Pohjola, Ritva Valkama) is also a key figure in Uuno films. One of the supporting characters in the Uuno Turhapuro films is Uuno's father, Hugo Turhapuro (Olavi Ahonen), who appeared in four films. Other notable actors in Uuno films included Elli Castrén (Unelma Säleikkö), Helge Herala, Hannele Lauri, Juhani Kumpulainen and Marja Korhonen. Marjatta Raita is the only one who has appeared in every film, if Uuno Turhapuro's brother, classified as an unofficial film, is included.
