    There has been many dyno tests on just about every model of diesel truck made in the last 25-30 years comparing different air filters and cold air intakes. There isn't a single aftermarket system that performs better than a stock unit on a mostly stock engine.

      I like my s&b cold air intake. I would imagine it does outperform the stock because of the filter surface area. But I could be wrong. However, if I had known at the time that Ford actually does make an upgraded cold air intake for the 7.3 and it’s bad ass, I would’ve preferred to purchase it. Not available at full force diesel anymore unfortunately but I’ll give you a part number check it out. Pretty bad ass and actually made by motor craft

    I have this upgrade on my truck, but i wasn't looking more boost, I was looking for cleaner air. The OEM square box filters let to much dirt go by, this upgrade provides cleaner air. You could actually see a film of dirt in the 4" tube from the old OEM filter box, it's been clean ever since I did the upgrade. DIRT KILLS DIESELS!!!

      This is 💯% spot on. Why kill your engine for 10hp or so. Those cleanable filters start clogging up within several hundred miles where I live. So they stop flowing more air fairly quickly.

  • @BlytheLifeRacing
    @BlytheLifeRacing 3 года назад +8

    you should think about making some ductwork to get cold air directly to that filter, the filter behind the battery sucks in all that hot air under the hood. I can tell a huge difference when its getting fresh air rather than hot air from under the hood.

    Unplug your red line on the waist gate and you will get 20-25 psi. With it plugged in, your waste gate starts opening via vacuum around 5psi

  • @kinotransam
    @kinotransam 3 года назад +1

    You can also make your own boost leak test rig. Find a PVC cap and rubber boot to clamp on to the front of the turbo, drill and tap the cap and install a air pressure regulator. Hook up your shop air and put about 5-7psi (a little more if you trust that the cap and boot won't blow off the turbo.) Then spray some soapy water all over the entire intake system and watch for air bubbles.

    I would suggest checking your exhaust back pressure. Then getting Bellowed up pipes if you don’t have proper pressure (I think 35-45 psi). Also, I don’t know if I would trust the boost displayed on that gauge. It is getting readings off of the map sensor. Also important to perform a boost leak test. I just did a bunch of work to mine. Had lots of boost leaks.

    You have an issue. That truck should make 15psi or a little better on the stock tune. Around 20psi with the stock tune and the wastegate line plugged. Look for soot at the top of the uppipes where they bolt to the Y pipe behind the turbo and the manifolds at the back cylinders. Also worth checking the compressor wheel. It's pretty common for the stock air boxes to break a clip and unfiltered air chips or sandblasts the wheel. If that's all good, look for boost leaks.

    Don’t know about these trucks exactly but wouldn’t the waste gate control 10psi no matter what if that’s what spring is in it? Probably free’ed up some horsepower making it breath easier but it would still open the gate at 10 psi. Just a thought

    Look at your EBPV to make sure it's working correctly, and also try adjusting the Waste Gate on the Turbo for more boost then you may see a better result. Also use a cool air box with the larger air filter like from RiffRaff for better results. It could also be your injectors need some HotShots Stiction Oil Treatment as well as some HotShots Diesel Extreme Fuel Treatment. Still an interesting video. Best Wishes and Blessings. Check the up pipes on that 7.3. Almost all of them leak and you'll lose boost. There is an upgrade from multiple companies to fix them with new tubes and new Y pipe with flanges instead of the crappy oem seals.

    It oughta make 17-20 bone stock, double check your map and back pressure sensors, if I’m not mistaken one got changed in an earlier video? I’ve seen differences in icp sensors between Ford models and international trucks even though they’re the same engine….wonder if you have the wrong sensor in it. Put a mechanical gauge on it to confirm the edge is correct

  • @bigronwaggles404
    @bigronwaggles404 Год назад +2

    Putting on this crap air filter is Great until it gets wet and plugs up the paper and starts sucking oil into your motor from your CCV. The new air filter might sound better but it's crap for your motor. Also I noticed you don't have your little plastic cover by your fuel filter, the little cover is there so your fuel filter won't jell up in the winter because the little fuel heater in the bottom of the filter can can't keep up with the cold, put that cover back on. also the stock air filter can protects the stock air filter from rain and has been proven to supply more air to your motor than what you did with that after market filter. I have to laugh how many people fall for the after market filters and Mods that actually hurt your performance of your motor. and make it ware out faster. Want a hot rod? buy a hot rod want a truck that is a pulling machine? keep the motor stock.

      There are several mods that improve on the design and create a much easier to diagnose and repair engine. Efuel, deleted pedestal, improved HPOP lines, are a few. Stock does not mean best. How many stock 6.dohs are left running today?

  • @kinotransam
    @kinotransam 3 года назад

    Also the exhaust back pressure warm up valve probably needs cleaned out. That truck should make arleast 15psi, maybe 18-20 with the TS chip on level 6 and the waste gate actuator vacuum line disconnected. Factory boost/fuel cut programmed in the ecm is at 18-20. You can use a cheap air pressure regulator as a "Boost Fooler" pre-set at 16-17psi on the boost line going to the MAP sensor mounted near the passenger side fire wall. This will keep the ecm from seeing enough boost to cause a fuel cut. Although factory fuel injection system and turbo on a 7.3 will only make a max of about 22-25 on a good day.

  • @kevin_nagle
    @kevin_nagle 3 года назад +1

    John, the truck has issues. It should be making way more than 10 psi with the TS chip, it should be up around 15-20 depending on load. Did you confirm the chip is installed correctly? Those chips are notorious for not making good contact with the ECM

      Agreed. Also the up pipes are bad about blowing out. Either way ur loosing alot of power. But typically its up pipes on a 7.3, they have a better updated kit out now besides factory. Also Iman aftermarket downpipe will also make a very good gain. But personally I would tow with that 75hp tune in it. It will make alot more power with a load behind it. And the exhaust leaks fixed. Also should make morethan that, especially with the tuner jack up 100hp, thatd be 200 more torque. Love the channel

    These hot air intakes reduce the air density going into the engine because they draw air from under the hood that comes thru the radiator. The stock air box draws cooler air from in front of the core support providing more air density. Whether that makes a measurable power difference is not shown by this test. Louder intake is less desirable to me.

  • @jamesb1988

    Smoke is probably from dirty fuel filter, based on how the rest of engine looks. Something I did that worked wonders with regards to turbo performance that's a piece of cake to do...tighten up the hose brackets that come out of the Y pipe/turbo. You can use either a wrench or deep impact sockets, they are all the same size except for one that's towards the front of turbo that's a little bigger. Don't forget the hose brackets that go down on both sides of the radiator! Might need a stubby wrench to tighten those ones. Takes 10 minutes to do all of them and my turbo sounds WAY better. Plus gave me a little more pep!
    You can also use a flathead screwdriver to tighten up the air filter related hose brackets while you are at it, you'd be shocked at how loose some of them are..

Even with a broken exhaust back pressure tube leaving a 1/4 inch open hole in the manifold and the sensor not reading at all my bone stock truck would make 13psi. Once that was fixed it was more like 15-16 (around what the trucks should make stock) and that’s at 1500ft in elevation with 240,000 miles. Tuned you should be making a lot more especially on a 75hp tune.

    I put a 4” down pipe to 5” exhaust on my 03 7.3 , then added a S@B air intake . Made a lot of differance but when I towed I’d get turbo surge . Ended up with a bd thruster 2 turbo , bellowed up pipes , boost fooler , cts2 monitor , Hydra tuner with 1023 diesel tunes , did the pedestal delete in the turbo and bigger housing . My 7.3 rips now compared to what it was . Still don’t hold a candle to these 100,000 new diesels . I’m also running 38s and it sets you back in the seat pretty good .
