  • Hens pick up to 15 000 times a day. To not injure their conspecifics, their beaks were shortened in Germany until 2017. In order to protect hens with full beak from feather pecking and cannibalism, risk factors were identified in the project. Besides the stable equipment, activity material is particularly important. The project group developed a control scheme that supports farmers in ensuring the animal welfare of their herds. The application is especially suitable for small laying hen farms, like in central Germany.
