    I may have mentioned once or twice, or maybe many, many times how excited I am for the launch of The Old World, and I have a lot of armies that I want to rebase ready to play(and all the new stuff too!) There's many options for rebasing these days, and I decided to make use of the ‪@algolaserofficial‬ cutter sent to me for making some movement trays as well as new bases! Hopefully this video shows you how easy it is to rebase, and how much better the new base sizes work for all those rank and file models!
    Here's the link to the laser cutter if you're interested!

    This reminds me of when Space Marines went from those 25mm bases to 32mm. They went from cramped and tiny looking to dynamic and it made them look a lot bigger. Great stuff.

    They look much better 👍
    100% agree the new bigger base sizes are a good change.
    I collected hoard vampire counts Warhammer army, 4 necromancers, unit of 30 grave guard, unit of 20 skeletons, and I think like 100 zombies broken down into large units, and like an extra 40 spare zombies for extra raising by the necros once the game started.
    I rebased everyone of these onto round bases for AoS 😅.
    I don't have that army anymore and will be starting a dwarf army for the Old World.

    Well no need to rebase since you can get movement bases from Litko that will take those 20mm bases and give them a frontage of 125mm or I.E. 25mm per figure. Now last year I finally decided to go through my "pile of shame" (which is quite large) and get units put together and get miniatures out of boxes, bags or old carrying cases. Taking them and getting them into movement trays and into new plastic containers that can hold 140 miniatures that are on 20mm bases. Oh and using magnetic base bottoms so that once in the movement tray they can stay a bit more stable.
    So that resulted in getting my Empire/Human, Elves and Dwarves infantry done along with their artillery. All told that is around 1600 - 1700+ miniatures but since I still have bit left in some boxes that I picked up and still need to filled out a few more units I really got around 1500 miniatures done (around 860 Empire/Humans, 305 Elves and 350 Dwarves). That was what I did last year and this year I got to painting them and so far I have painted around 600 miniatures (I did have a few painted already). I still need to get more painted and then start to work on my Orks & Goblins and Undead.
    Now I thought to use the neodymium magnetics with the old plastic bases but they created an issue to where if I put miniature to close together they started to do a spin dance. So in the middle of painting (had around 450 miniatures painted I decided to use wooden bases with the magnetic base bottoms and rebased 641 miniatures which was a good thing since those old plastic bases worked but were getting brittle. So got that done and finish painting. I do have 1300 bases with the magnetic bottoms for those other miniatures still in boxes and for the Orks & Goblins and Undead. All sprayed painted forest green so to save some time later.
    Once I am done with all of the Infantry there is still the Cavalry to do. But I do recommend that you prime those miniatures while they are on their old bases and spray paint your new bases green since that will save a bit of time (since I have found that it takes 2-3 coats of green paint for each base before the base is decent enough).
    Oh and I have two needle nose pliers one with a 90 degree bend and work to break the miniatures from their old bases then use some clippers to cut off the bottom piece. This worked for most of the miniatures (I have already did this for the Orks & Goblins because when you have hundreds of miniatures to do it does take a bit of time) but in some cases where they were really glued into the old bases I just used the clippers and cut around the feet and using my file and dremel to file down the bottom and just glued the whole thing onto the new base.

    Get an ventilated enclosure for it ASAP. the fumes from the material burning can negatively affect your lungs. you also want the enclosure because glancing at the laser cutter while it is working can cause permanent damage to your eyes. manufacturers not including an enclosure is pure negligence.

    Oh and I due recommend using magnetic base bottoms to those miniature bases and on the movement tray since that does keep them in place a bit better. Mantic Games for their Kings of War rules stated that you can just glue them all onto the movement tray but if you do that you cannot use those miniatures in a more one on one set of rules.

    The most important question, of course, is the question of prices for classic miniatures. Most of my Warhammer collection is just old fantasy on round bases, seriously adapted for the Mortal Realms. I'd want to develop this idea further.
    If some starters/armyboxes have a good price, then I can buy them and sell the square bases or exchange them for round ones at a favorable rate.

    I agree they look better, but (in the fear of talking realism for a fantasy game) in ancient combat many types of units were tightly packed so you could present a solid wall of shields. Often your shield wasn't even covering you but instead the man to the right, hence the phrase 'right hand man' as this would have been the man covering the commander in combat

    • @MediocreHobbies

    I’m not convinced that the bigger bases is a great change. Soldiers ranked up for combat are supposed to be close together.
    But my main concern is table space! Warhammer is a game about movement and maneuvering. Larger units means less space. The game will suffer from it.

    • @MediocreHobbies
      @MediocreHobbies  11 месяцев назад +1

      I understand your worries. I was also a little concerned. Especially if they make the table 44x60 like all new tables.

    • @mattiasgamin3891
      @mattiasgamin3891 11 месяцев назад

      It’s quite likely that they go for the 60x44 tables as table space is quite a threshold for many (new) players. But we’ll see. I have played a lot of WHFB since 2nd edition and never really liked AoS so some buzz about the return of the old world is certainly welcome. Fingers crossed that the rules are great. I think the game was quite good there in 8th edition so it’s really interesting to see where they take it now.
      On a side note it was kind of funny to see the new knights of the realm on foot. They look big! If a designer get larger, 25mm bases they will make sure to fill them up apparently. It didn’t seem so easy to rank them up properly. :-)

    Any elbow room between models due to larger bases will be non existent with new sculpts. Citadel models always grow to occupy 110% of their base. I want miniatures that are actually miniature. Not the ever increasing in scale action figures 40K and AOS use these days.

    • @MediocreHobbies
      @MediocreHobbies  11 месяцев назад

      These are the miniatures that will be on these bases, they’re not changing the rank and file ones! Maybe try Legions Imperialis 😄

    • @GoatTheGoat
      @GoatTheGoat 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@MediocreHobbies Yes, those are the miniatures on those bases. But as citadel releases new models, they will be much larger and will completely fill the bases. New models will look out of scale with your current models. That is why increasing the bases sizes is a bad idea.
      You can already see this happening with the preview of the Bretonnia knights on foot. They are much larger than the returning Bretonnia foot troop models.

    Its an interesting trade-off. If you spread the models out you get to see the painting more clearly and they are easier to individually manipulate but heavy infantry look increasingly unrealistic. Heavy infantry might have marched that spread out but they would probably have fought even more closely packed than the 20mm bases, with their shields overlapped. I recently rebased some figures even closer together and they looked great as a group, but I had to make a compromise and group base them rather than as individuals.

    • @MediocreHobbies
      @MediocreHobbies  11 месяцев назад

      I think spreading them out also gives you the space for more dynamic models. I understand the men in a shield wall makes sence to be close packed. But giant lizards or dynamic elves need the space in my opinion.

    Thanks for this video. I am really looking forward to news of The Old World. I hope you plan on doing painting tutorials for some of the new models when they come out. Would this work with movement trays for round bases? Say I want to base my Old World models on round bases so I can use them as AoS minis. Would I be able to use this to cut out movement trays to adapt round bases to a square based game?
