  • In Alien, Ripley's nose bleeds during her confrontation with Ash. Is this because of a deleted scene, or has it taken on other meanings within the series?

I always thought that in this scene, Ash did something to the air pressure in the area of the ship they were in, which caused the nose bleed and Ash's sweating. Ash, knowing he was an android, knew he could survive with low or no air where Ripley would have difficulty if she chose to get in a physical conflict. That was always my theory anyway.

Here in Japan, people getting nosebleeds when seeing others naked or some other stressful happening is a bit of a trope. I thought it was a superstition until one day I got out of the shower to find my Japanese girlfriend had called her female friend over to tea without me knowing. The visitor got a nosebleed from seeing her first hairy foreign body (mine), so the Ripley scene isn't so far-fetched. More significantly, horror movies from the late 70s and early 80s like Alien and The Thing have all these little throwaway touches that give them depth and verisimilitude. Go watch Rob Ager's analysis of the sabotaged blood bank in The Thing, and how the audio cue of the dropping of a set of keys sets this up almost subconsciously in the viewer.

I never really though much about this. It seemed more like a natural occurrence during the film due to injuries that Ripley has suffered. But now that you mention it, there could be a deeper meaning attributed to them that works better with the plot of each film. By that logic, if Ripley ever returns in another film, maybe they should make that a part of it.

I never gave in any thought. Just one more layer to a highly realistic film. This is why old films are always better. It's the level of detail from real craftsmen who worked unhindered by business administrators. They could construct a vision in their minds without having a committee meeting over every detail. Also practical effects always have more weight, literally and emotionally.

    • @1luarluar1

Another thing about the character of Ripley is the amount of time passed between the first three movies from her perspective. I would guess the total time lapse is less than six months from her perspective although actual story time was over 57 years. Not known how long it was since the hearing about the Nostromo destruction and accepting the offer to accompany the team to Acheron but more than a month for certain since she told Burke she already had her psyche evaluation that month. Just mention it because funny how years went by making the movies but character perspective so little time had passed yet Weaver managed to pull it off by not appearing to have aged hardly at all with accrued time to make the movies.......

It is quite common for stress and (in Asian culture) heaty body (热气) possible from lack of water to cause nosebleed. I remember my piano teacher having this on almost a severe level. She always attribute it to stress and lack of water and too much oily food, she is ok btw. I also witness people doing strenuous physical work without rest or sports especially one of my female classmates after PE to have nosebleed, its rare but does happen. So that is what I thought Ripley was having - too much stress, couple with her running up and down without rest nor drink caused her to nosebleed without injury. Really love those details in Alien.

  • @icarus313

I think the nose bleeds might just be symbolic and not have anything to do with actual plot points in the movie itself. The idea that nose bleeds are a signal of some sort of primal "connectedness" with another person/entity is an interesting one though.
And there's precedent for that in other works of science fiction. For instance, in the 1984 film adaptation of Dune, Paul Muad'Dib drinks the water of life and goes through the spice agony ritual. As this happens, we see his nose start to bleed. Then the scene cuts away to show Paul's mother, sister, and the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, all located far away from Paul at the time ... and they all develop nose bleeds simultaneously. I can't remember if that's ever specifically mentioned in the original Dune novel or not, but just strictly from a film director's perspective it's a fascinating, visceral, and even mildly disturbing way of symbolically conveying the idea that all four of these people are now connected to each other in a way that is metaphysical and beyond our ability to rationally comprehend.
I know that obviously the Alien cinematic universe is very different from the Dune universe, but I like the idea that nose bleeds seem to have this vaguely agreed upon meaning to them, across multiple unrelated sci-fi films.
I think that's pretty cool, if you ask me.

  • @darioinfini
    @darioinfini 4 года назад

One of the scene inconsistencies that bother me if I let it is how Ash suddenly looms over Ripley's shoulder. Shocking and disturbing but if you apply thought to it, it doesn't make sense. After all the effort it takes to get into that room -- only the designated officer can get in after a huge amount of hoop jumping -- flipping switches, shuffling data cards, pulling levers -- the door opens with a whoosh and you get a flutter of audio activity as things come alive. There's no way for Ash to have sneaked in there without her noticing.
Secondly more than the nose bleed, I've always been curious about the very obvious bruise on her cheek during the tense earlier meeting after Dallas' encounter with the Alien. Ripley assumes command and starts deciding procedures from there. The light on her face captures a raised bruise on her cheek that doesn't seem to have explanation either and I've always been curious about it because all attention is on her, specifically her face, and the bruise is inescapable.

    Geez... way to overthink it.
If you've seen other Sigourney flicks you'll see that it happens quite often. She is prone to nosebleeds when she gets overexcited, which is what happened in the scene when she attacks Ash in the first Alien movie. The same thing happens to a friend of mine when he gets overwhelmed or his temperature gets too hot. It's a common thing that happens to a lot of people.

It might be Biblical: the life of the flesh is in the blood. A consistent reminder of the three distinct beings having differing values towards life. One red: passionately human. One white: indifferent android. One yellow/green: acidic alien.

Personal theory: Ripley's nose bleeds are sexual in nature. They are a reminder that the character, no matter how imposing and strong, is still a female. It represents fertility, vulnerability, maternity, and maturity. The scene in Alien with Ash is highly sexual. The white "blood" drips down from his "head" and Ripley's blood drips from an orifice. The juxtaposition of these two scenes is a very subtle, but very suggestive.

Ripley, aka Sigourney Weaver is of course a Badass, and anyone who wants to knock her off her throne, good frickin luck! Like, Mary Sue Rae against Ripley??? Please!!!!!! The problem with the Alien Franchise is it decided to blow off Sigourney Weaver's legacy and continuity of time with the Weyland Corp. Folks, and just go insane over the barfazoid David, highly unlikely years younger thank God Weyland of yesterday times a thousand or whatever, and think anyone cared one ounce about the Engineers (oooh so cool so perfect so our Creators so killed one of the weylands for being a narcissistic ass, oooooohhh but then killed David oooohhhhhhh)

I used to suffer nosebleeds quite a lot as a child and some of them were as a result of anxiety or fear. People do suffer from this, so its possible that Ripley's nose started bleeding due to the stress and terror she was experiencing!
