The auctioneer is trying to get a number/$$$$$ to establish the opening bid. For online bidders if the opening bid is too high just don't bid; however if you feel it's a good number then bid. I don't see any issue with this. Unless you're on the auction floor there presently isn't any way for an online buyer to spit out a number to the auctioneer. I do see the need for "policing" or lets say surprise audits, etc... Only way to do it is with experienced individuals who know the auction business to help oversee it.
What you need to watch out for is when you actually bid on the car online then you're bidding against a pole/ghost where the auctioneer is actually running you up. And also look out for when two online bidders are fighting for the car then all of a sudden you've got a fake floor bidder. At the same time being experienced I can tell when I'm being run up and play the game if I feel I'm getting a good buy.
