it feels like gege didn't know how to have sukuna win in a satisfying way. the slash itself makes sense but it feels like a huge cop out, especially when combined with constant reminders that sukuna is, somehow, "still holding back"

Only thing is not the technique, there are things that belongs to person like battle iq, strengh or durability.
Yeah but Gojo has more than that. Like the reply ontop said and also Gojo has RCT and his DE. Just cuz theyre part of the same clan and have the same technique doesnt neccessarily mean they'll have the same DE. Now it might but the thing to consider is that just because it would have the same concept doesnt mean it would have the same refinement. Gojo's DE is as refined as Sukuna's, who literally has an open domain, so theres that to consider aswell. Then RCT allows him to use Reversal Red, which then allows him to combine it with Lapse Blue, making his strongest attack, Hollow Purple.
Also Kenny is still weaker than modern Gojo so I dunno what you were implying there. Also the peak of jujutsu doesnt mean there were stronger people than Gojo, just that everyone in the Heian Era probably had Domain Expansions or everyone there were just considered immensely strong, on a special grade 1 level perhaps. Or it could be that there were much more sorcerers and much more cursed spirits to exorcise, meaning every sorcerer would have immense cursed energy, when compared to modern day sorcerers.

The Heian-Era is the peak of jujutsu the golden age of jujutsu therefore everyone there was way stronger than anybody in the modern era simply because it was the golden age. Kenjaku wanted to create the Golden Age of Jujutsu again where everyone would get stronger as he said during the culling games. That doesn't mean everyone was Gojo level but there were way more special grades and there were maybe a handful of people that were his level. Simply because of Sukuna's dialogue after the fight with Gojo. He didn't say he was the strongest he said he did well. There is also the possibility that he was trash-talking him in the end because of how he wasn't in his Heian-Era form and because of their first encounter. @@joshacd150
