This is the first time I'm seeing this tradition of carrying drinks on the head. Can you talk more about it and what it signifies, please.
That's Igbo tradition and I am from Imo state.
Igbo marriage rites has several stages, to give the parties and families time to study each other, investigate/ ask questions, since dating is not part of our marriage system; before bride price is paid and the final wine carrying. But because people live far away and has jobs these days, that's why people think wine carrying is the only tradition.
So, in Imo state, where I come from, each time the bride returns from her husband's place to her family, she Carrie's one of the calabash of palm wine on her head...keep in mind that in the olden days people were married close to home and distance was short, thus walkable.
At the end of the ceremony, she Carrie's one of the empty calabash, now consumed back to her husband's home.
Her first visit ,she stays for four days; then she goes again and stay for 8 days.
If both parties are satisfied, then other marriage rites with the kinsmen begins.
If the man' s family is dissatisfied at any point, the bride comes home with a calabash of palm wine ,alone, with no entourage from her husband's place.
Upon,seeing her, the family automatically knows the marriage is no longer going on.
Okay, read the books and talk to your grand, great grand parents.
Because of modern day life style, jobs, distance etc, these ceremonies are most times condensed. That may explain why it is done this way, to just show, significance.
