  • Ibiza wasn’t always the party hotspot it is today. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that it became a tourist destination, with hotels, restaurants and clubs popping up everywhere.
In 1969, construction began on what is known to be Ibiza's first ever Superclub; named "Festival club". Originally opened in 1972, the large complex included an open air restaurant with several rows of concrete tables , amphitheatre and several dance floors. Hosting music concerts, mock bullfighting, performance entertainment and more, it invented the idea of a large multipurpose discotheque on Ibiza.
The abandoned Festival Club lies in the hills above San Josép. Such a restricted location meant that the owners of the venue were required to build an access road in order to reach the structure. Back in these days though (early 1970's) when bus tours were at their height, coach-loads of international tourist clientele would descend on the venue for endless nights of wining, dining and dancing.
It was the 1970s oil crisis that took a toll on Ibiza: losses began to mount up and airfares began to suddenly increase.
As a result, foreign holidays for tourists soon decreased and fewer tourists began visiting the island. The Festival Club, robbed of its steady stream of bussed-in patrons, experienced mounting debts from a poor previous season, and was therefore forced to close its doors in 1974, after just two years of being in operation.
Several attempts were made to reopen the venue, but to no avail, and it has since been left abandoned with nature slowly reclaiming the site back. During its many years of abandonment, it has also become the scene of illegal raves in the 80s and early 90s. There is also some footage available of DJ's playing at the abandoned site on RUclips.
Today it is just a crumbling reminder of what once was, but as you can see from the video, the site is now a different kind of popular tourist attraction, for both graffitti artists, photographers and likeminded urban explorers, interested in Ibiza's past.
