You’re definitely not just bad at the obstacle course. The jump mechanic is insanely frustrating. I work as a UX designer. When working on new app projects, one of my first questions is always: "Would this be just as useful if it were a website?" For something like Kurtistown the answer is no, it wouldn't be just as useful. It would be much MORE useful since any device could access it, users wouldn't have to walk to the new destination, and (with the exception of the bad obstacle course), everything would still be accessible. As for the desktop version, a few things: 1. A website would be more appealing. This game/product/whatever is very ugly. 2. That's not how navigation usually works in computer games, for lots of reasons I'm not getting into. So its 100% not on Amanda that it feels weird. Overall, this whole product is baffling.
Love Kurtis, and by that, I mean I love Kurtis' videos and don't really interact with other fans/buy merch/go to his shows. I watch him a lot and he never really talked a whole lot about it on his channel (but people can correct me if I'm wrong), maybe once or twice and definitely not recently. I don't think he cares enough about this to really feel invested in it or he saw the writing on the wall and stopped talking about it during his main videos. I actually didn't know this was a thing that came out until I saw Amanda's video lmao
Don't love that people just excuse this with "get that bag." I get that YTs can't always be 100% ethical with their sponsors or the brands they work with but this is just corny. Like he literally makes fun of adult YTs marketing to kids then marketed to kids with this dumb merch selling app. His content is defined by making fun of "those kind of YTs" like. It's you dude lol Btw I don't really have a strong opinion on Kurtis this is just an example of an unfortunate thing on YT that's been happening a lot more recently
the phone getting hot likely means its unoptimized. It doesn’t seem like something so big that it would cause the phone to overheat at full optimization. Hilariously the only app I ever encounter that issue with is tumblr which is far from the level of a 3d world. The app reminds me a lot of zepeto (i think thats what it was called) and I never had issues with that.
I'm pretty sure I know what the girl in red worlds collab was! For her last album she had an interactive web page called world in red that linked to her merch/album behind the scenes/touring etc that you could pan around, it was much simpler than the app and wasn't an actual 3d rendered world though. It makes sense that they're also producing things like that, it's probably where they're making most of their revenue if I had to guess.
I love the way your avatar runs, it's so goofily urgent. Even funnier to think of Amanda being in a physical Kurtis Town and being so excited, that she's just running from one place to the next.
When it first launched on patreon, there were in game cosmetics you could buy for real money, which just sort of rubbed me the wrong way with a project that seemed so clearly unrealized and unfinished. From what I could find the production company Moment House is behind Worlds which I know has worked with TMG in the past with some live events. Everything about it is just...not great, and I wish there was more info about the people behind the project or how it came to be, it all feels a little off. Hopefully nothing bad happens given how shody the security seems to be, kurtis gets his bag and everyone just forgets it exists.
Oh Moment House worked with GMM too- I hate the video on demand feature bc wtf, why can't I just buy a recording of the show to keep??? I mean, I know the answer greed, but I am under no obligation to like that.
No yeah that's exactly the vibe it's giving but like entirely those games made for the ad of it all. Like you know those Roblox partnerships with some person you've never heard of that the game for them then gets promoted in the ad posters and billboards in other games you actually like playing and you decide to see how awful it is and you go in it for like 5 minutes and attempt to figure out what the fuck the purpose is but it's ultimately just a useless barely thought out ad with their name plastered everywhere. Watching this felt like an even more shitty version of those because it doesn't even have the Roblox basic controls that actually work
About what you said with the computer controls being weird, it's not just you. What you described is called tank controls and it is rarely used (like it's mostly there for vehicles in games) because it's slow and inconvenient. The normal way to control on pc is to allow characters to walk sideways and control the camera with the mouse. I'm guessing because the mouse wasn't available this was the compromise, but other games manage to make it work anyway.
Given that anything to do with a virtual world is a grift nowadays, I think Kurtis was approached with a proposal for "A custom world like club penguin," Kurtis said hell yeah, and the company just didn't deliver (and probably won't!) Maybe he will one day give us insight into why billion dollar companies also keep falling for this scam.
This seems a lot like the crypto and NFT games that kept coming out. I wonder what the intention was when he started working on it a year ago... Or if worlds was going to do some sort of NFT thing.
I’m really glad someone made a video about Kurtis Town. All respect to Kurtis, but I was never going to engage with that thing myself. However, I was a little curious about it.
This is just another metaverse which is far more about selling the person while at the same time I assume "Worlds" gets some kind of kick back of money somehow. This isn't for most people and realistically will die within the coming months and will be mostly forgotten about outside of a video like this.
Ok so we got a taste of Gaming with Amanda. I Want more!!!!! please play minecraft, city skylines, sims 4, stardew valley or literally anything. it would be so funny. 10/10 content. great video as always
I’m a pretty big fan of Kurtis, I’ve seen him live and I’ve been a subscriber for years. But when I saw him promoting this I thought it was so…weird? Out of character even? I couldn’t tell if it was a joke or not. I wasn’t interested in try it at all but I was a bit curious so thank you for making this lol
I'm not the biggest Kurtis Conner fan anymore but his app/virtual world is so sad. Two different spots to buy his merch ($75 for a sweatshirt? Be real bestie) and a badly programmed obstacle course. This is what he's been working on for a year and is super proud of? Mmmkay.... I saw another commenter say that they feel like Kurtis got money hungry and ambitious during the pandemic and I agree. This just feels like a cheap cash grab. Whether he approached Worlds or they approached him, I think he's laughing all the way to the Kurtistown Bank.
Not the original poster but: jokes got lame and repetitive, low effort videos, shoddy research/inaccurate facts and I just felt like I wasn’t the target audience, it was much younger people. I think the podcast made me even more aware his humour wasn’t for me and felt forced. (Although I have found I don’t vibe with most youtuber’s podcasts, as I want different things from a podcast and a RUclips video).
@@AM-tl1xi You hit a lot of the same points I would. I also at some point around 2021 felt like Kurtis was just pushing out lazy content and I could tell his heart wasn't in it any longer. He's made boucoup bucks off YT, he's just phoning it in at this point, the same way Cody Ko is.
As a HUGE Kurtis fan (who has spent way too much money on his live shows) I was kinda worried about this video, but it was nice to see someone else struggle with the same things as I did . I haven't been on Kurtis World in so long because it was so glitchy and made my phone hot too. I also felt like there wasn't anything to do. But when I played it they had old videos playing in the town square. Did he remove that?
I thought Kurtis was cool, but this just seems like a great way for kids to be exposed to language and people they shouldn't be exposed to yet. Like, this is obviously a Roblox ripoff, and Roblox is mainly played by young children. I'm sure Kurtis has plenty of child fans, and kids are probably the only ones who will spend more than 10 minutes on this. It's pretty slimy of Kurtis to have something clearly aimed towards children have 90% of the content be buying merch and tickets and the other 10% is unmoderated, barely censored chat with strangers. Not cool of him. Not cool at all.
it’s more of a metaverse ripoff isn’t it? also kurtis isn’t aimed at children, if he happens to have child fans how is it his responsibility to cater to them? the things seen in chat probably aren’t that far off from some of the inappropriate jokes and language in his vids
As chronicallygothic said, in no way is Kurtis' demographic kids. Maybe there are some kids who watch him but I imagine the majority of his fans are 16+ lol. As with all content online, kids should stick to child safe spaces or at the very least parents should be aware of what their kids are doing online. It's not the job of adults online to keep kids out of adult spaces, it's their parents. Don't get me wrong, I do think this whole thing is weird, but saying "well kids could be on it!!" is not really the problem here lol
You showcased why I only used it once and it all seems so weird to me. The idea of it is fun, but neither the message boards or the actual world is truly fun to use, in my opinion. It's just inconvenient compared to the alternatives.
I was waiting for a video on this! And also love that you’re doing a video about Kurtis. (A non-collab I was never expecting but glad you did this, Amanda!)
My guess for the origin of this is that kurtis was approached to do it, and he probably thought it would be funny. I think it’s neat in an ironic way, like Roblox Concerts. But it’s Way early stages of the site so it just seems like garbage now lol

Great video, but the Jeremy Renner app existed for like 2 years before drew and Danny made a video about it and then shortly after that, it was shut down.
Can't wait for Swell World and only see scathing reviews of the app and financial advice
Swell world would be awesome cuz she could do fortnite-like events but themed around real life conventions. (This idea is free if you wanna use it sis, I won't sue)
Swell would you ever go to a furry convention
hasn’t she ?
The only furry content I would tolerate.
genuinely been thinking about why she hasn't. seems very on point for the channel and would be interesting!
i would love for her to go to one
I mean she already went to anime expo, she’s halfway there already 😭
As someone that watches both you and kurtis my first reaction to this was “wtf is kurtistown”
Edit: after watching the video, I’m like insanely embarrassed for kurtis. Over a year and THIS is what he released? Yikes
Yeah, I can only assume he’s getting a bag, but it’s still a weird choice.
@@evknightfulI got a weird feeling Kurtis got super numbers obsessed and ambitious midway through pandemic. Nothing outright malicious, just the kind of perspective shift that tends to precipitate moves like this
Don't be embarassed for him, he probably got paid a bit to promote this and its not harmful really. I doubt he had any involvement in the app at all.
@@Narnold yeah idk if he was like hyping it up or it costs money or smth but as far as i can tell it just seems like one of those stupid harmless things ppl do when they get big. like accepting a raid shadow legends sponsorship lol. still a shit game, i just wouldn't put it on the same level as like an nft or crypto thing
@@NarnoldEh. I think overhyping something you had zero involvement in has its own fallacies.
You’re definitely not just bad at the obstacle course. The jump mechanic is insanely frustrating. As you progress through it there is check points so if you fall you don’t respawn all the way at the beginning but they’re broken! Most of them respawn you INSIDE the log obstacles making it impossible to continue.
After my first time playing I genuinely thought he was going to be making a video about it bc it was too bad to be true but… idk
Also the game is so bare bones I don’t understand why he wouldn’t just make a sub reddit like danny has. seems like the chat/posting feature is the best part of the game which is no different from a subreddit
Congratulations for featuring in a The Right Opinion video! (The Lily Singh video, for those who haven't seen it)
"One less pixel and this would be a radio" 💀
I work as a UX designer. When working on new app projects, one of my first questions is always: "Would this be just as useful if it were a website?" For something like Kurtistown the answer is no, it wouldn't be just as useful. It would be much MORE useful since any device could access it, users wouldn't have to walk to the new destination, and (with the exception of the bad obstacle course), everything would still be accessible.
As for the desktop version, a few things:
This is such an obvious money grab. So glad you covered this!
Why do companies keep dumping money into dumb apps like this that no one is going to use longer than a couple of days. So weird.
Avoiding taxes, money laundering. pick your choice
It's you dude lol
Btw I don't really have a strong opinion on Kurtis this is just an example of an unfortunate thing on YT that's been happening a lot more recently
agreed! more people need to be recognizing this! i wonder what his responses have been to the criticism?
Its litterally a space for him to sell his stuff with a couple games
the phone getting hot likely means its unoptimized.
It makes sense that they're also producing things like that, it's probably where they're making most of their revenue if I had to guess.
kurtis fans are being absolutely delusional for defending this. like, he should be absolutely embarrassed.
It's like toon town without any of the fun and whimsy and full of ads including his merch like it is a capitalism nightmare to be quite frank
Literally, like if any other RUclipsr released this you know kurtis and all of his fans would be clowning on it for how bad it is
i think he just did it to get a bag which is fine

I love the way your avatar runs, it's so goofily urgent. Even funnier to think of Amanda being in a physical Kurtis Town and being so excited, that she's just running from one place to the next.

not me clicking on this video thinking swell was gonna pretend to be a kurtis fan lol
Fair review, but I knew you would be. You & Kurtis exploring an event would be iconic.
So it’s basically Roblox but not Roblox
this is gonna sound mean but ive seen roblox games that are better designed
@@morg2040 I feel bad to say it but like…yeah
No yeah that's exactly the vibe it's giving but like entirely those games made for the ad of it all. Like you know those Roblox partnerships with some person you've never heard of that the game for them then gets promoted in the ad posters and billboards in other games you actually like playing and you decide to see how awful it is and you go in it for like 5 minutes and attempt to figure out what the fuck the purpose is but it's ultimately just a useless barely thought out ad with their name plastered everywhere. Watching this felt like an even more shitty version of those because it doesn't even have the Roblox basic controls that actually work
Thanks for sharing this amazing impressive new technology with us Swell!
Love that this came out the same day as Jarvis’s metavwrse vid
my favourite part of all this is the platforming minigame with tank controls like it's stil 1996
Given that anything to do with a virtual world is a grift nowadays, I think Kurtis was approached with a proposal for "A custom world like club penguin," Kurtis said hell yeah, and the company just didn't deliver (and probably won't!)
Maybe he will one day give us insight into why billion dollar companies also keep falling for this scam.
This is hilarious. I've been a bit obsessed with Kurtis's videos recently and then I see this. 😂
When I saw this my first guess was that it was sort of tongue in cheek from Kurtis? It's ... certainly odd.
Ok so we got a taste of Gaming with Amanda. I Want more!!!!! please play minecraft, city skylines, sims 4, stardew valley or literally anything. it would be so funny. 10/10 content. great video as always
murder with my husband world is ghoulish. a fun interactive game world revolving around stories about the most horrific crimes! jesus
May I ask what made you not a big kurtis fan anymore?
Yeah I don't like him much anymore either and this weird game cemented that feeling for me.
@AM-tl1xi Thank you for your input. I was curious to why someone would loose interest in him. Thx for sharing!
The only explanation I can find is that the check they offered must've had a bunch of zeros
damn, I clicked because I saw Kurtis in the title and the thumbnail not expecting the video being so entertaining but it really was!
@@chronicallygothicI'm pretty sure Kurtis doesn't say he hates gay people and use racial slurs in his videos lol
@@DammeDaniel-ic3mh hence the word “probably” but kids on the internet have most definitely seen like. all of that and more already lol
This IS the first time I've heard of Kurtis Town. No, I'm not annoyed. It was an interesting video. fun
Been listening to the Swell Shenanigans podcast on Spotify and love it. I'm on episode 16. My favorite so far is the Birds Aren't Real episode.
You showcased why I only used it once and it all seems so weird to me. The idea of it is fun, but neither the message boards or the actual world is truly fun to use, in my opinion. It's just inconvenient compared to the alternatives.
Amanda, under cover?!
I'm intrigued.
I was waiting for a video on this! And also love that you’re doing a video about Kurtis. (A non-collab I was never expecting but glad you did this, Amanda!)
I was wondering about this since he announced it. It seems dumb. So excited
My guess for the origin of this is that kurtis was approached to do it, and he probably thought it would be funny. I think it’s neat in an ironic way, like Roblox Concerts. But it’s Way early stages of the site so it just seems like garbage now lol
I'm a pretty big fan of Kurtis (my name was inspired by the "YEE YEE" meme from his videos), and this is literally the first time I heard about this. I would have preferred a real-life Kurtistown rather than whatever this is.
Same to everything you said lol
I wonder if he’s doing this for a video experiment he’s gonna post or this is what serious ?
I absolutely love kurtis but I feel like this whole thing was just weird like, maybe some thing his management wanted him to pursue?
This is the first time I have heard of it, like the majority of your videos.

it was on a podcast episode. he was talking about that guy in toronto who opened a workers co-op and was making fun of him saying if he was a real anticapitalist he should give all his stuff away for free. it was so dumb, he literately googled capitalism to double check what it meant, but didn't google workers co-op. @@chonk32

I alway got the impression that it was just for the memes. He doesn't take it seriously, he's a dry sarcastic comedian.
It's always odd to me when websites like this crop up that are specifically made to artificially create fandom spaces? Like,, those things usually form organically and aren't especially marketable (eg Tumblr) so any company that bases their entire deal around that is just... Off putting to me?
How did I as a regular Kurtis watcher not have any idea about this thing's existence??
didn't he talked about it's launch at several of his videos? I wonder if he deleted that portion or not🤔
oh wait it's kind of creepy now that I'm trying to find out which video did he made a promo on that it's completely gone??? I clearly remember that him talking about it in multiple videos but it seems like it's existence was just...disappeared?? it's so confusing

I feel like this is something he was just approached for and isn't all that involved in personally. Could be wrong, but that's what it looks like.
I don't think it's embarrassing, I love when people create games to sell there merchandise 😅
Poptropica was created by Jeff Kinney to advertise his books.
I definitely think he could have put more effort into it. It looks like a cool idea just not executed right.
Wait, why am I just now learning this about poptropica???
Poptropica had puzzles and games though 😅
@@Agmolly exactly! tie-in free promo "metaverse"s can work, and poptropica is an example of one that was *both* created as an advertisement at its core *and* is a fundamentally pretty good game. it's very childish, but considering the demographic pretty good, and there's a lot of content! the point is that the idea of what he's selling isn't bad, it's the execution.
I’m very disappointed that the few times I tried Worlds I didn’t manage to intersect with Swell!!
