Quick Note for people doing the belt change on these model walkmans. If you are still noticing the speed is too slow or too fast there is a white screw adjustment next to the motor. Slightly turn that while playing a tape to get the speed just right. I replaced my belt and still noticed it was playing a little slow still so I turned that pot slightly while listening to the same song on my PC and now it's working great!
Thank you so much! I almost threw away my Walkman from when I was little. It worked about a year ago and now was no longer was playing. Thanks to your video I bought a belt and was able to fix it and am now listening to the tapes I recorded from the radio from the 80’s and 90’s. 😃
I have Sony Walkman wm-ex102 cassette player which was a gift from my grandfather. I used it for quiet some time in 90s. Recently I needed to play an old tape that has my grandmother's poems and I pressed few buttons to rewind/fast forward and it worked. As soon as hit play, tape wouldn't move. I figured it either got ripped or slipped. It was the latter. I found your video and opened the player and corrected the issue. Thank You!
I love my WM-FX33 😊 That was my “teen” model, and I missed it, so I bought mine brand new off eBay still sealed in packaging since 1990.. so beautiful. But yes, I still needed to swap the belt. Only $6! ❤
99% sure this is the exact model of portable cassette player I lost when I was a kid. I only had it for about 2 months and it just disappeared, never to be seen again. We tossed the whole house and our cars looking for it. I distinctly remember that style of auto-reverse switch and that no other portable in my childhood had anything like it. I also remember the mega-bass switch which did nearly nothing for sound so I ignored it. Anyway nice to see this thing again.
Hi, thank you for this great tutorial. It was really useful because my Walkman, that is also the same model, arrived today and it had the exact same problem as you. I listened to music for about half an hour and suddenly it stopped and even though I changed side it wouldnt start again. I didn’t know what to do so I searched up this tutorial and I could thankfully repair it without accidentally breaking something. Turns out that I had the exact same problem. Thank you and I wish you the best with this channel
Thank you so much for this video! I just bought these exact model a few days ago (i used to have it when i was a kid). Something i saw in other videos, its that they use white lithium grease (applied with a small stick or an ear swab), so it helps against overheating gears. Regards from Madrid and thank you again!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been searching for a cheap Sony Walkman for quite some time and this model is one of them! With this tutorial i could repair it if it is actually broken!
Hahah, that accent really gives you away. Hallo, noorderbuur! 😁 And thanks for the instruction video. Was considering picking up a walkman from eBay, and wanted to get an idea of how hard it would be to replace the belts. Didn't look too complicated, so now I got a WM-FX45 + new belt on the way. One thing though. When replacing the belts, it's always a good idea to clean the pulleys with a q-tip drenched in alcohol. This removes the rubber residue left by belts that have gone sticky, or rubber dust from belts that dried out. Always a good idea to do some maintenance while you're in there anyway.
Thank you this was very helpful. Based on this video alone I was able to rehabilitate an old wm-43. The belts are arranged a bit differently but the principle is the same. Many thanks!
With my model WM-FX443 there is a circuit board in the way, but I found a video on how to unscrew it, gently unclip and release the 2 ribbon cables and lift the board out. The video is for a WM-FX 271 but the principle is the same.
i have an old model sony that hs been infixed by me for a few years now and it does have a new belt but this video just inspired me to work on it again, wish me luck.
In this video you seem to repeatedly call the take-up and supply sprockets (or pulleys) “heads.” You did later redeem yourself by referring to the actual heads as “heads.” Good job on the repair. I wish all decks were that easy to replace the belts.
I was doing this for a friend with this same unit. I knew how to change belts but i needed this video for reference on how the belt needed to be installed. Thanks for this. I was so confused about the 2 capstans. Why are there 2 when it only plays in one direction?
The video was very helpful, thanks. I replaced the driver belt and my Walkman worked fine for a little bit but now stops immediately after I press play with the play button popping back up. If I take the cassette out, the play button stays engaged and the head spins. Any idea as to why this might be happening?
Thank you very much, good Instructions. Got myself a wm41 and this one for only 7€ eBay !!!!and i thought this one would be broken. ( For just 7€ its still a outgeourgeous Price) and now i have two working Things :) either i keep it or sell it for 6x 🥴
If you don't hear a motor turning on, the problem you first need to fix is getting that motor to run. Might be something simple as a disconnected wire between the battery compartment and the pcb. You'll know for sure when you open it up.
@@RetroGameCouch thx for replying, i just opened his case and couldnt seem to find the problem. But in the end, when i closed the case it just started working fine lmao I think i'll never know what happened XD
@@blacksaturn2004 Yeah, welcome to the wonderful world of retro electronics. While opening something shifted, moved, fell into place. You'll never know. What matters is that it now works.

do you know if the wm-ex152 has the same feature?
Thank you thank you
@@tomwade-mo5jd all tape players/recorders have this feature
Most players do, use the manual for your specific model

Great to read stuff like this. Glad you got it sorted and my video sorta helped.
Found a wm-fx301 model at the thrift a few weeks ago for 3 bucks and you just helped me replace the belt. Thank you good sir🙏
You're welcome.
You sir are a bloody genius! £5 for a new belt & now working good as new.
Glad you got it sorted!
That looked super easy, thank you so much for showing us how to do that!
Hope it's useful.

What is the belt size?? Plss (for this model)
Thankyou ❤

Can’t find answer: how to put on new belt so it don’t get twisted? Maybe can you do a video?

Hi i have a aiwa ps120 when i flip the walkman upside down it plays slow
Thank you!
No problem! 😎
Hello. Good vidéo
how i can adjust the azimuth in this walkman?
Azimuth is fixed on this one. There is no provision to easily adjust like other players.
How do I know what size belts to use?
They sell belt for specific Walkman types.
where round belts are avilable
I found most belts to be available on eBay.
thanks a lot
i changed the belt. but now its playing slow.. how do i fix this?
Which model do you have? There might be a trim pod somewhere to adjust the speed.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOUUUUUUU
what if my walkman doesn't even make any movement or doesn't show any sign of movement of the motors inside? could it be more than the belt?

I tried that. Didn't work. 😁
The belt that went off the track may be good. Instead of replacing the belt , you could have tried the old belt and see if it works bro.
What is the belt size ?
Check the ebay link in the description.
Old tape ? Sound kinda jiggling
I have a 314 mega bass !!!
Ah yes, that is the exact model I had as a teenager. Loved that thing!
