What most folks don’t know, is Bluebird does not make the rolling chassis. They receive a rolling chassis from another manufacture, and simply drop a bus body onto the frame. They never touch the wheels.
Mechanic Here, All CDL drivers are required to do a pretrip on their bus and to check the lug nuts. that being said if one bus had an issue and then another bus had the same issue, I would of down'd them all and would of done an inspect to verify that those lug nuts are not lose
If the bus drivers were doing their job. They would have discovered them long before the wheels fell off. Legally they have to to do pre and post trip vehicle inspections. Those buses should have been put out of service.
The pre trip inspection only checks the lights on the bus, (i.e. blinkers, head and tail lights, and the yellow and red flishing lights. Stop sign and stop arm). The tires and other parts of the bus are supposed to be checked by the mechanics, not the drivers.
This comes from poor pre trip inspection. As a cdl driver you have to do a pre trip. As a school bus driver its the same way. At my company we have to do 2 pre trip inspections everyday one in the morning before our am run and one before we pick our students up from school

So many points of failure happened... It's unacceptable.
Special School District used to be a big repeat customer at Carpenter Body works. That was in the early 1960s. But back then, buses were built to last. The school should be responsible for not checking the other school buses monthly or at least yearly. The fact that they try to blame bluedird is just obvious that most of their buses are that brand exactly.

The buddy lug-nut device is an excellent idea. They should come as standard equipment from the bus manufacturer, not put in later at the school districts expense.🙊🙉🙈😤🤬🤑
I know I was rude in blocking people for teasing about the buses. But this is not funny. What if a child had been injured if a wheel fell all the way off. This story is not the thing to making jokes about.

merc731 Yes but pretrip inspections usually don’t require you to check the lug nuts, not even on school buses, mostly lights decals and safety equipment if I’m not mistaken. Looks more like a manufacturer defect that should’ve required either a safety recall or tsb to be issued months ago. There’s also a lack of communication between the state and it’s districts to make the mechanics aware of the problem so they could inspect and retorque the lugs.
